清乾隆五十五年（1790年），高宗八旬萬壽，江南徽班沿水道、陸道進京，參加慶祝活動。途經河北，演於水陸碼頭，隨即將二簧帶入河北境內。此後皮簧逐漸在京、津、河北一帶流行。同治年間，河北鄉間出現皮簧子弟會，從同治到光緒年間，有許多河北梆子演員兼習皮簧，皮簧藉助梆子的勢力流向河北民間，光緒十七年（1891年），田際雲的王成班首倡了梆子和皮簧「兩下鍋」的演出方式，許多戲班爭相效法。從此皮簧腔大量流入河北各地。
建國初期，京劇在河北境內的專業劇團數量已達五十多個，省直和各地市都有京劇團。1953年後，京劇不再與其他劇種合演。1966年以後，河北省京劇院、唐山市京劇團和張家口市京劇團都在全國產生過較大的影響。「十年動亂」期間，一些地方戲劇團，迫於形勢紛紛改習京劇，但所演劇目僅有八出樣板戲。然而業余京劇團和票社卻遍布全省城鄉。
京劇傳入河北後，對河北地方戲產生了巨大的影響。京劇的劇目、化妝、服裝、表演程式、音樂都不同程度地影響著河北的地方劇種。
繁榮發展的創作和演出
伴著共和國的腳步走過半個多世紀的河北省京劇院，在不同的歷史時期創作、演出過大量群眾喜聞樂見的作品。40年代末期，毛澤東、朱德、周恩來等領導曾觀看過該團演出的《花木蘭》、《三岔口》、《打焦贊》、《借東風》等劇目。
建國後至1978年底，河北省京劇院始終堅持為群眾創作演出。該團演出的《梁紅玉抗金兵》、《三打祝家莊》、《血淚仇》等戲曾轟動一時。《戰洪圖》、《八一風暴》、《沙家浜》、《紅燈記》、《杜鵑山》等戲都成為膾炙人口的經典劇目。改革開放後一些老戲重新在京劇舞台上演，《逼上樑山》經省京首演後，場場爆滿。其中《秦英征西》在河北、河南、山東等地巡迴演出300多場，觀者如雲。
我省地方京劇團先後推出了一批在全國有影響的好戲，主要有：唐山市京劇團創作改編的《節振國》、石家莊地區京劇團創作改編的《霓虹燈下的哨兵》、《橋頭鎮》、張家口市京劇團改編演出的《八一風暴》等。這些劇目曾在全國產生較大的反響，其中《節振國》曾被長春電影製片廠拍成戲曲片。
名角薈萃的演員陣容
