Allen （not his real name） is driving north out of Virginia in the middle of the night， with stolen property in the back of his van. But Allen isn't a criminal – in fact he normally would never dream of breaking the law.
The property he stole is a dog he calls Flash. Allen doesn't particularly want Flash – in fact， in a few hours he'll drop him off at a stranger's house and never see him again. I couldn't just stand by and do nothing， he explains. The owner was plainly neglecting the dog， but the police wouldn't do anything about it.
For over a year， Flash had been tied to a tree in front of someone's house. He was sick and malnourished， says Allen. More than once I saw [the owner] kick him for no reason at all. Allen had repeatedly tried to get the owner to take better care of the animal， or to give it away to someone who would. Finally， he took matters into his own hands – in the dead of night， he took Flash off his chain and drove away with him.
Within an hour， Flash had a new license tag and was being treated by a veterinarian who knew better than to ask questions. Pictures of the dog were put up on animal rescue websites， asking for someone to adopt the dog. A couple in New York offered to take the dog， and animal lovers in states along the way agreed to provide transportation.
Nobody can say for sure how many animals like Flash are ‘rescued' every year – receiving stolen property is a crime， so rescuers tend to stay in the shadows. But a growing number of empty collars attests to their work as more and more animals find their way to loving homes.

中國少年先鋒隊是中國少年兒童的先進組織，是在中國共產黨的直接關懷下建立起來的，已有70多年的歷史了。
少年兒童革命組織的發展隨著中國革命形勢的發展而發展，大體上可以分為五個階段：即1924年到1927年北伐戰爭時期的勞動童子軍；1927年到1936年土地革命戰爭時期的共產主義兒童團；1937年到1945年抗日戰爭時期的抗日兒童團；1946年到1949年建立的少年先鋒隊；1949年新中國成立後建立了全國統一的組織棗中國少年兒童隊，後改名為中國少年先鋒隊。
在這70多年中，我們的少年兒童組織為中國革命和國家的建設培養了一代又一代有用之材，發揮了巨大作用。下面批們就對她的光榮歷史分階段加以介紹：
勞動童子團
二三十年代的中國是一個半殖民地半封建的國家，內憂外患，人民過著窮困不堪的生活，大部分少年兒童連飯都吃不飽，更不要說上學了。他們小小年紀就去種地、做工，或者給有錢人當奴婢，過著非人的生活。
1924年，新生的中國共產黨和國民黨合作，進行北伐戰爭，要把不合理的制度推翻。在領導工農大眾鬧革命的同時，黨在武漢、上海、天津、唐山、廣東、湖南、江西、海南等許多地方建立了勞動童子團，吸收了大批重工、學徒、貧苦兒童和小學生加入進來。
共青團受黨的委託領導勞動重於團的工作。1926年，共青團第三次擴大會議上所做的決議中明確規定：教育兒童，養成他們勇敢犧牲的精神和團體生活的習慣，訓練他們將來成為繼續革命的戰士，是共青團的重要使命。
在共青團的直接領導下，勞動童子團發展很快，取得了很大的成績。
在城市，勞動童子團員們跟隨父兄參加反抗資本家剝削的罷工斗爭，參加反對帝國主義和軍閥的示威斗爭。他們的口號是：「准備著打倒帝國主義！准備著打倒軍閥！准備著做全世界的主人！」
在鄉村，勞動童子團在斗土豪、查賭博、破迷信等活動中發揮了積極作用。
正當勞動童子團蓬勃發展時，1927年，背叛了革命的蔣介石發動了血腥的「四一二」反革命政變，大批革命志上、共產黨人慘遭殺害，革命遭到極大破壞，勞動童子團的發展也被迫轉入低潮。
共產兒童團
周恩來、朱德等領導的南昌起義（1927年），打響了反抗反動派的第一槍。緊接著，在毛澤東同志領導下，舉行了秋收起義，創建了工農紅軍，開辟了農村革命根據地，中國革命走上了農村包圍城市的正確道路。
在1927年至1936年土地革命戰爭時期，黨在革命根據地棗蘇維埃地區，為少年兒童建立了共產兒童團，黨委託共青團領導共產兒童團。
1930年，共青團五屆三中全會召開。全會在決議案中指出，兒童運動的性質是「共產主義兒童運動」，任務是「以共產主義精神教育兒童」，口號是「准備著，時時刻刻准備著」。
共青團從中央到各級團部，都設立兒童局，領導兒童團工作。蘇區兒童普遍參加了共產兒童團，在共青團領導下，積極參加學習和各種革命活動。
當時兒童團的一個重要任務，就是經過宣傳動員，使絕大多數兒童都進入列寧小學學習。同時，每年的兒童節，共產兒童團都要舉行大檢閱，檢閱學習成績、野外演習和游戲等，生動有趣，又富有教育意義，很受兒童歡迎。
兒童團員們還積極響應黨的號召，宣傳擴大紅軍，開展擁軍優屬活動，形式活潑多樣。比如湖南、江西的兒童團員組織了扇子隊，在紅軍隊伍休息時，給紅軍戰士送水打扇。兒童團組織的「少共星期六」義務勞動，主要是幫助紅軍家屬做些力所能及的勞動，也很有意義和影響。
同時，在保衛蘇區的戰斗中，共產兒童團組織中還涌現了許多英勇獻身的少年英雄，留下了許多可歌可泣的故事。
抗日兒童團
1937年至 1945年，是中國歷史上波讕壯闊的抗日戰爭時期，黨領導下的許多抗日根據地都成立了抗日兒童團的組織。
抗日兒童團員們在青年救國會的領導下，積極參加抗日救國斗爭，他們同抗日軍民一道，廣泛參加各種抗日活動，十分活躍。
抗日兒童團的任務是：宣傳大家打日本；偵察敵情抓漢奸；站崗放哨送書信；尊敬抗戰官和兵；幫助抗屬來做事；學習生產不稍停。
從東北的黑土地到晉西北的黃土高原，從蘇北地區到陝甘寧邊區，到處活躍著抗日兒童團員們的身影。
到1940年，陝甘寧邊區有7萬兒童團員，蘇北解放區有18萬少年隊和兒童團員，華北抗日根據地有60萬兒童團員，他們是當時抗日兒童團的主力。
其中，最為活躍和出色的是晉察冀邊區的兒童團，他們站崗放哨、捉漢奸、送情報，利用自己年紀小，不被注意的特點，深入敵後，出色地完成任務。在晉冀一帶，直到現在仍流傳著放羊小英雄王二小把日本鬼子引進八路軍包圍圈的故事。晉察冀邊區抗日兒童團還開展了「五不運動」：不給敵人帶路；不給敵人送信；不吃敵人的糖；不念敵人的書；不告訴敵人藏糧的地方。
解放戰爭時期的少先隊、兒童團
1945年8月，日本帝國主義投降，中國的抗日戰爭經過8年奮戰，終於取得了偉大勝利。
面對勝利果實，蔣介石掉轉槍口，瘋狂搶奪。人民不會答應反動派繼續騎在頭上作威作福，在中國共產黨的領導下，經過3年多的解放戰爭，終於推翻了壓在中國人民頭上的三座大山，取得了解放戰爭的偉大勝利。
在人民解放戰爭中，黨領導的解放區的少先隊、兒童團和國民黨統治區的地下少先隊，都做出了自己的貢獻。
1946年，蔣介石反動軍隊進攻解放區，陝甘寧邊區兒童團和晉綏邊區兒童團開展了軍事操練，站崗放哨，救護傷員，積極支前。同時，他們還在解放區的土改運動中斗爭地主，看守財物，籌集糧食物資，為前線將土做了許多後勤工作。
在敵占區，黨的地下組織建立了報童近衛軍、鐵木兒團等地下少先隊組織。他們秘密印發傳單，張貼標語，宣傳革命形勢。他們還巧入敵人心臟，刺探情報提供給解放軍。
解放戰爭時期的少先隊員和兒童團員們在戰爭中成長，在戰爭中鍛煉，真正達到了晉綏邊區 1946年建立少先隊組織時在隊章中規定的培養目標，即「培養少年兒童一代，提高其文化、政治水平，發展其學習各種技能和社會知識，為獨立、自由、民主、統一和富強的新中國培養人才」。
新中國的中國少年先鋒隊
1949年10月1日，鮮艷的五星紅旗在天安門前冉冉升起，中華人民共和國誕生了，中國人民從此站起來了！·新中國的誕生為少年兒童一代的健康成長開辟了道路，為少年兒童工作的順利開展提供了條件。
早在1949年1月，中共中央就頒布了（關於建立中國新民主主義青年團的決議）。在決議中把建立新中國的少年兒童組織列為團的四項任務之一。10月，中國新民主主義青年團中央委員會正式頒布（關於建立中國少年兒童隊的決議）。1953年6月，又改名為中國少年先鋒隊。
少先隊繼承了革命戰爭年代兒童團的優良傳統，以紅領巾作為自己的標志，象徵著革命的勝利。少先隊員們在黨團的領導下，以「時刻准備著，為共產主義事業而奮斗！」作為自己的呼號，投入了火熱的革命和生產學習中去：
解放初期，在土地改革、鎮壓反革命、抗美援朝運動中都可以看到少先隊員們活躍的身影。他們參加控訴會，參觀上改展覽會，放哨監督地主分子；他們通過讀報和討論，知道暗藏的反動分子還要伺機破壞革命，所以一定要擦亮眼睛，提高警惕；為了支援志願軍，少先隊員們紛紛給志願軍叔叔寫慰問信，寄賀年卡，還用勞動所得捐獻「紅領巾」號飛機，為保家衛國貢獻一份力量。
在三反五反斗爭中，許多少先隊員參加了「要愛護公物，要愛惜時間，要艱苦樸素，不要損人利己，不要浪費，不要貪小便宜和拿別人的東西」為內容的三要三不要活動。在第一個五年計劃期間，少先隊開展了「小五年計劃」活動，收集廢金屬，捐獻拖拉機，種樹、種植油料，支援社會主義建設。
1963年，毛主席發出「向雷鋒同志學習」的偉大號召，少先隊積極行動起來，學習雷鋒同志全心全意為人民服務的精神，做好事不留姓名，毫不利己、專門利人。同時，少先隊還廣泛地經常性地開展了除四害、講衛生、植樹造林等活動，都收到了很好的效果。
但是，史無前例的「文化大革命」期間，少先隊組織遭到了摧殘，少先隊的名稱也被取消了，代之而起的是具有錯誤的組織性質、違背少年兒童的成長規律和工作規律的「紅小兵」組織。
十年內亂結束後，共青團十屆一中全會恢復了中國少年先鋒隊的名稱，少先隊工作又重新活躍起來，在全國范圍內廣泛開展了「我們愛科學」、「大種蓖麻，支援四化」、「五講四美」等生動有趣、富有教育意義的活動，培養了一代「面向現代化、面向世界、面向未來」的新人。
兒童節，也叫"六一國際兒童節"，每年的6月1日舉行，是全世界少年兒童的節日。
1949年11月，國際民主婦女聯合會在莫斯科舉行理事會議，中國和各國代表憤怒地揭露了帝國主義分子和各國反動派殘殺、毒害兒童的罪行。為了保障世界各國兒童的生存權、保健權和受教育權，為了改善兒童的生活，會議決定以每年的6月1日為國際兒童節。
在此以前，世界上的許多國家就有兒童節。1925年，國際兒童幸福促進會倡議建立兒童紀念日，英國、美國、日本等國積極響應，先後建立了自己國家的兒童節，英國規定每年的7月14日為兒童節，美國規定5月1日為兒童節。日本的兒童節很特殊，分男女兒童節，男兒童節5月5日、女兒童節3月3日。我國在1931年也曾經規定4月4日為中國兒童節。
