說起桂林就不能不提陽朔和它的西街，這個被國外最知名旅遊雜志稱為「月亮下的石頭城」的小山村，卻有著敢叫板「陽朔山水甲桂林」的牛氣。在陽朔，從古稀老人到三歲孩童個個都說得一口流利的英語，人人都揣著一本靈活變通的生意經。西街本來是條巴掌大的小街，來的老外多了，也就成了現在的西街。經常有遠道而來的老外愛上了當地的姑娘，索性「解甲歸田」，安隱於此，於家小酒吧，弄個小餐館，開枝散葉，生根發芽。
「桂林桂林，桂樹成林。」桂林因桂花而得名，城中條條街、道道巷都種有桂花。金秋時節，滿城都是馥郁的桂花香，清香卻不甜膩，就像桂林城與人，熱情洋溢卻極有分寸。桂林到處是山，山上到處是樹，兩江四湖的水也是明凈清澈的。桂林的山水是無綠不歡的，正因為如此，桂林人終歸是看不起南寧人的。桂林人覺得南寧人像暴發戶，占著首府的便宜，鋪點草皮移種些大樹就滿世界嚷嚷自己是「綠城」了，其實真正從那塊土地上長出的草都沒有幾根，是先天不足又後坐無力的表現。
因為桂林人連首府也不看在眼裡，所以你千萬不要試圖批評桂林，那肯定是吃力不討好的事，你不要批評桂林人的小氣，雞毛蒜皮的事也記在心裡和你計較；你不要批評桂林人的那一點點自私，他們存了小心眼想多賺幾個老外和遊客都傻得可愛，不騙白不騙、不斬白不斬；你更不要批評桂林人一心想把桂林城做大做強趕超南寧、甚至趕超廣州的氣魄，只要你有膽量說桂林應該保持小而美、不要盲目追求大而全，就算你夠狠勇敢。
但是，無論怎麼說桂林也是極可愛的。陳毅元帥有詩贊道：「願做桂林人，不願做神仙。」神仙雖好，卻沒有煙火。桂林是一個有煙火的人間仙境，是每一個成年人心底深藏著的永遠鮮活的童心夢
