人們上山時，常常可以看到松鼠在松樹上竄來竄去，一條又長又蓬鬆的大尾巴，常常向背脊上反轉。有時候，兩只前腳捧著一個松果，用銳利的門牙啃著吃，好像寺廟里拜佛的燒香客。
松鼠在茂密的樹枝上築巢，或者利用烏鴉和喜鵲的廢巢，有時也在樹洞中做窩；它們除了吃野果外，還吃嫩枝、幼芽、樹葉，以及昆蟲和鳥蛋。秋天一到，松鼠就開始貯藏食物，一隻松鼠常將幾公斤食物分幾處貯存，有時還見到松鼠在樹上曬食物，不讓它們變質霉爛。這樣，在寒冷的冬天，松鼠就不愁沒有東西吃了。
