Nanjing occupies an area of about 6.6 thousand sq km. (1.6 million acres), with a opulation of more than 6 million. Known as one of China's 'Three Stoves' (the others are Chongqing and Wuhan, Nanjing's temperatures in summer can reach a high of over 40 Celsius degree (104 F. degree) while the coldest days in winter can drop to less than minus 10 Celsius degree (14 F. degree). It still has a regular rainy season from June to July every year. So the spring and autumn are the more favorable times to visit weather-wisely and autumn is especially scenic when the maple leaves turn bright red.
History
Nanjing is one of the best-known ancient capital cities in China and vaunts a long history and deep cultures. The excavation of the skulls of ancient prehistoric men in the city dates Nanjing's civilization back to 350 thousand years ago. The city itself was built more than 2,400 years ago in the area southwest of the huge Zhonghua Gate. The gate was critical for many military functions. Since the third century AD, ten dynasties in China, including the epochal Republic of China founded by Sun Yat-sen, established Nanjing as their capital.

Nanjing 南京, is in the south-eastern part of China. It is the capital of China's Jiangsu Province, and a city with a prominent place in Chinese history and culture. The population in Nanjing is around five million. Nanjing (literally: 'Southern capital'), founded 2500 years ago, served as the capital of China ring ten (10) historical periods and is listed as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. Nanjing was the capital of the Republic of China (ROC) before the Chinese Civil War. Nanjing is also one of the fifteen sub-provincial cities in the People's Republic of China's administrative structure, enjoying jurisdictional and economic autonomy only slightly less than that of a province.
Located in the lower Yangtze River drainage basin and Yangtze River Delta economic zone, Nanjing has always been one of China's most important cities. Apart from having been the capital of China for six dynasties and of the Republic of China, Nanjing has also served as a national hub of ecation, research, transportation and tourism throughout history. With an urban population of over five million, it is also the second largest commercial center in the East China region, after Shanghai.
Nanjing has a humid subtropical climate and is under the influence of the East Asia Monsoon. Seasons are distinct in Nanjing, with usually hot summers and plenty of rainfall throughout the year. Along with Wuhan and Chongqing, Nanjing is often referred to as one of the "Three Furnace-like Cities" along the Yangtze River (長江流域三大火爐) for the perennially high temperatures in the summertime.
Surrounded by the Yangtze River and mountains, Nanjing also enjoys beautiful natural scenery. Natural lakes such as Xuanwu Lake and Mochou Lake are located in the center of the city and are easily accessible to the public, while hills like Purple Mountain are covered with evergreens and oaks and host various historical and cultural sites.

Nanjing
The capital of Jiangsu province, east-central China.
Located on the southern bank of the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang) northwest of Shanghai, the site has been inhabited for thousands of years. The present city was founded in 1368 by the Ming dynasty, which had its capital there (1368–1421). It was taken by the British in the Opium Wars of 1842 and was largely destroyed ring the Taiping Rebellion in 1853–64. Nanjing was opened as a treaty port in 1899 and was the Nationalist capital from 1928 to 1937; it was then taken by the Japanese.
