hardly, scarcely, barely
這些副詞均含「幾乎不」之意。
hardly： 指接近最低限度，差不多沒有多餘，強調困難和程度。
scarcely： 指不太充分，不太夠，不足，不能令人滿意，強調數量。
barely： 指僅僅夠，一點不多，強調沒有多餘。
這三個短語都可表示「一…就…」。其區別是：
1.as soon as可轉化為no sooner...than或hardly...when結構。例如:
As soon as I heard the knock I opened the door.
No sooner had I heard the knock than I opened the door.
Hardly had I heard the knock when I opened the door.
當我聽到敲門聲,我馬上就開門了。
2.as soon as通常用於一般時態, no hardly...than和hardly...when通常用於過去完成時。例如:
As soon as you finish your job, let me know.
你一完成工作就告訴我一聲。
No sooner had the doctor arrived than he began treating the sick
.醫生一到馬上就搶救病人。
I had hardly started when it began to rain.

這一對副詞都有「幾乎不」、「幾乎沒有」的否定意味，但涵義重心有細微的差異。
hardly:hardly強調「困難」，指程度而言，常用以修飾表示能力的詞，與can、ever、any等詞連用。
他簡直不知道說什麼才好。
Hehardly knew what to say.
我簡直不能相信，一些社會名流，達官政要竟然涉及集團罪行。
Ican hardly believe that some socialites and dignitaries are involved insyndicated crime.
scarcely:scarcely強調「不足」，主要指數量而言，常與enough、sufficient、any或數詞連用。
他懂得彈鋼琴還不滿四歲。
Whenhe played the piano he was scarcely four years old.
電車上十分擁擠，幾乎沒有你立足之地。
Thetram was so crowded that there was scarcely sufficient room for you.
午夜時分，街上幾乎看不到一輛的士。
Atmidnight，scarcely any taxi could be found in thestreets.
這組詞意思相近，其區別是：
hardly常用來修飾表示能力的詞; scarcely強調不足,常與enough, sufficient
等詞連用; barely強調「勉強」。例如:
The enemy are so exhausted that they are hardly able to fight any longer.
敵人已經疲憊得簡直不能再戰了。
The field is so thickly grown with rice that there is scarcely sufficientroom for one to work in.稻子長得很密,人們簡直無法下田勞動了。
I have barely enough money to buy a cup of coffee.
我的錢剛好夠買一杯咖啡。
hardly, hard
1.hard可作形容詞或副詞; 而hardly只能用作副詞。
2.hard意指「堅硬」「痛苦的」「結實的」「艱難地」「困苦地」「費力地」「困難地」; 而hardly是「幾乎不」「幾乎沒有」的意思。
He hardlyever goes to bed before eleven o'clock. 他很少在11點以前上床。
I had hardlyever gone out these days. 這些天我很少出去。
I havehardly ever seen her. 我幾乎一直未看見她。
Hardly anybody came.
幾乎沒有人來。
He could hardly refrain himself.
他幾乎不能自製。
The desert air contains hardly any moisture.
