成人學習的第一步就是分派學習小組，有兩種基本方法可供選擇。一種是讓成人憑興趣任意選擇，一種是由教師根據每個成人各方面不的特點，把程度參差不齊的成人安排在一個小組。我們還可以按成人居住地分組，以利於假期學習。成人的不同特點包括個性、學習成績、學習方法和語言能力，等等。把特點不同的成人編在一組，可以促使成人在成人學習中相互信任、了解和欣賞。編組一定要小，保證每個成人都有充分的發言機會。每組以4人為宜，因為在需要的時候，很容易在組內分成兩對，進行一對一的活動。
2.成人學習活動的類型。
(1)問答法。「問答法」是通過提出問題和回答問題進行的課堂交際活動，但它不應僅局限於教師提問，成人回答，而應該是社會交際活動在課堂上的再現，包括人們在獲取信息時的大部分活動。活動本身要圍繞著某個題目展開。由於問答法涉及很多人們社交時的初級活動，運用的語言知識比較簡單，基本上處於短語和句子水平， 因此問答法比較適合於開展課堂交際活動的初期，或者是剛進校的成人。
(2)討論與決策法。「討論與決策法」是讓成人針對某一個問題做出決策，然後幾個人組成一個小組，各自陳述自己的決策並進行討論，最後向全班宣布討論的結果。
由上文所述對成人怎麼學英語的看法，在提高成人綜合運用英語能力方面有著不可估量的作用，甚至可以把課堂延伸到課外，使成人在假期也可學習，共同完成一項或多項任務，實現用英語交流的目的。
