第一，在與西方人面對面談話的時候要注意保持一定的距離(keep a certain distance)。當然，不同社會文化習俗的人保持的距離是不一樣的。對英美人而言，這個距離是3英尺，如果是面對東歐人和南美人，這個距離還可以再近些，但仍要在2英尺以上。第二，在跟英美人第一次見面相互握手的時候，一定要有點力度，如果握起手來有氣無力，或者只伸出手指尖來給人握，就會給對方冷冰冰的感覺，英文中管這種握手叫做wet handshake。

男女之間的握手一般是女方先主動伸出手來，男子不必主動；女方若不伸手，亦可點頭致意。西方人之間(特別是親屬和關系密切的朋友)的見面禮還有擁抱和親吻，這個我們暫時還用不到。第三，必須特別指出的一點是eye contact(目光交流)，是否有這種目光交流是表明你自信與否的重要手段。在中國，受幾千年傳統文化的影響，尤其是在面對長輩的時候，我們會盡可能避開他們的目光，盡量表現得謙虛、恭敬。但是，在外國人看來，這是一種不誠實的行為，你的話的可信度會大打折扣，甚至他會懷疑你在說謊。這是我們中國學生在申請獎學金面試和找工作面試的時候最不注意同時也是吃虧最多的地方。還有一些body language(體態語言)是西方文化裡面所特有的，比如：
