荷蘭的風車，最早從德國引進。開始時，風車僅用於磨粉之類。到了十六、七世紀，風車對荷蘭的經濟有著特別重大的意義。當時，荷蘭在世界的商業中，占首要地位的各種原料，從各路水道運往風車加工，其中包括：北歐各國和波羅的海沿岸各國的木材，德國的大麻子和亞麻子，印度和東南亞的肉桂和胡椒。在荷蘭的大港--鹿特丹和阿姆斯特丹的近郊，有很多風車的磨坊、鋸木廠和造紙廠。
