1929年，1300多名政商學界人士召開大會，表決通過籌辦重慶大學，並發布《重慶大學籌備會宣言》，提出「研究學術，造就人才，佑啟鄉邦，振導社會」的辦學宗旨。建校後，重大便以此作為第一代校訓。
「誕生於風雨飄搖的年代，奠定了重大『耐勞苦、尚儉朴』的品格。」曾擔任重大第三任校史辦主任的張志芳告訴記者，學校創辦之初，正逢抗日民主運動蓬勃發展之際，1936年，學校頒布《重慶大學訓育及管理方法》，明確提出「訓育學生之標准為：耐勞苦，尚儉朴，勤學業，愛國家……」
進入上世紀五六十年代，重大曾將富有時代特色的「團結、勤奮、求實、創新」作為第二代校訓。

80多年來，朴實的辦學宗旨和校訓，也潛移默化地激勵著一代又一代重大人。
該校1937級校友周世堯，是我國石油鑽井專業的第一位教授，將一生都奉獻給了石油事業；1952年，該校31歲的青年教師徐僖研製出我國第一批五棓子棓酸塑料，結束了我國塑料生產靠進口的歷史……數據顯示，重慶大學先後培養了包括40餘名院士在內的大批優秀人才。
