一、用途不同

二、分類不同

2、狹義含義：全斷面隧道掘進機，在中國，將用於岩石地層的簡稱為（狹義）TBM（硬岩TBM），用於軟土地層的稱為（狹義）盾構機。

相對於狹義盾構機，TBM因其對設備的可靠性和長壽命要求極高，被稱為工程機械的「掘進機之王」。

優勢：

隧道掘進機里，全斷面隧道掘進機安全可靠。

「每月最快可以掘進1000米，而傳統的打眼放炮的鑽爆法每月開挖距離在100米左右。」打眼放炮的施工方法原始又有極大的危險性，採用掘進機施工則相對安全、高效。

例如，第一條墨脫公路（即扎墨公路）的隧道是採用打眼放炮的施工方法，第二條即派墨公路的隧道是採用從德國進口的岩石TBM施工方法。

由於中國研製岩石TBM，中國工程里使用的岩石TBM，主要是國產品和德國品。
