我國國慶節的歷史由來 ：

1949年10月1日，是新中國成立的紀念日。這里應該說明一點，在許多人的印象中，1949年的10月l日在北京天安門廣場舉行了有數十萬軍民參加的中華人民共和國開國大典。其實，人們頭腦中的這一印象並不準確。因為，1949年10月1日在天安門廣場舉行的典禮是中華人民共和國中央人民政府成立盛典，而不是開國大典。實際上，中華人民共和國的「開國」，也就是說中華人民共和國的成立，早在當年10月1日之前一個星期就已經宣布過了。當時也不叫「開國大典」，而是稱作「開國盛典」。時間是1949年9月21日。這一天，中國人民政治協商會議籌備會主任毛澤東在政協第一屆會議上所致的開幕詞中就已經宣告了新中國的誕生。
那麼10月1日的國慶又是怎麼回事呢？在中國人民政治協商會議第一屆全國委員會第一次會議上，許廣平發言說：「馬敘倫委員請假不能來，他托我來說，中華人民共和國的成立，應有國慶日，所以希望本會決定把10月1日定為國慶日。」毛澤東說「我們應作一提議，向政府建議，由政府決定。」1949年12月3日，中央人民政府委員會第四次會議接受全國政協的建議，通過了《關於中華人民共和國國慶日的決議》，並宣告：自1950年起，每年10月1日，即中華人民共和國宣告成立的偉大日子，為中華人民共和國國慶日。從此，每年的10月1日就成為全國各族人民隆重歡慶的節日了。
國旗的誕生
1949年6月16日新政協籌備會決定成立國旗、國徽圖案初選委員會，並於當年7月14日至8月15日在人民日報等報紙發表徵稿啟事。1949年9月全國政協第一屆全體會議期間，初選委員會將收到的3012幅圖案選了38幅印發全體代表討論。經全體代表分組討論後，9月25日晚毛澤東主席召開國旗、國徽、國歌、紀年、國都協商座談會。關於國旗的問題，毛澤東主席指出，五星紅旗這個圖案表現我們革命人民大團結。現在要大團結，將來也要大團結，因此，現在也好，將來也好，又是團結，又是革命。
1949年9月27日，全國政協第一屆全體會議的全體代表通過決議，選定了由曾聯松設計的五星紅旗為中華人民共和國國旗。決議指出：「中華人民共和國的國旗為紅地五星旗，象徵中國革命人民大團結。」
