壞處在於大學譯名隨意性過強，容易造成混亂。
1.例如「北京外國語大學」和「上海外國語大學」同是「外國語大學」,但是前者英譯為「Beijing Foreign Studies University」, 後者卻為「Shanghai International Studies University」。特別是上海外國語大學的英譯引起的爭論很大。很多人認為學校的英譯名與原來的中文名沒有很大聯系，從英譯名再翻譯回去已經不是原來的大學了。其實，可以從「異化翻譯」策略的角度來看待上海外國大學的英譯校名。當今，國內的大多數外國語大學或外國語學院，由於其學科範圍已經不再局限於外語教學，相反，其涵
蓋了許多涉外學科，甚至是一些理工類學科，所以在英譯校名時，可以不用直譯為 foreign language university。
2；交通Jiao Tong? 眾所周知, 翻譯不能單純地憑借詞典釋義, 而漢語拼音有時也可以
充當譯詞使用。但/ 注音式0的翻譯方法也只能局限於某些特殊的漢語詞彙, 比如, qigong0 (氣

而交通一詞在含義上似乎並不為中國人所獨有, 在英文中也有相應對等詞語, 具有基本相同的內在含義。既然它不屬於地名、河流等性質的專有名詞, 也就不能用漢語拼音簡單地去替代之。我國權威工具書辭海將交通一詞定義為: /各種運輸和郵電通信的總稱。即人和物的轉運輸送, 言、文字、符號、圖像等的傳遞播送。漢英辭典將交通解釋為: traffic; communications 。根據我國交通大學的專業設置和辦學性質, 交通一詞的主要含義應為後者。有趣的是, 在上海交通大學校園網的主頁上, 其校名竟赫然譯作/ Shangha i Jiao Tong University。吳光華先生主編的新漢英辭典，其封面上的上海交通大學出版社, 英文譯名也為/ Shangha i Jiao Tong U niversity Press0, 然而, 就在此部辭書中, 交通一詞的定義卻為traffic; commun icat ions; transportation0, 而/ jiao tong隻字未見。
