The property he stole is a dog he calls Flash. Allen doesn't particularly want Flash – in fact， in a few hours he'll drop him off at a stranger's house and never see him again. I couldn't just stand by and do nothing， he explains. The owner was plainly neglecting the dog， but the police wouldn't do anything about it.
For over a year， Flash had been tied to a tree in front of someone's house. He was sick and malnourished， says Allen. More than once I saw [the owner] kick him for no reason at all. Allen had repeatedly tried to get the owner to take better care of the animal， or to give it away to someone who would. Finally， he took matters into his own hands – in the dead of night， he took Flash off his chain and drove away with him.
Within an hour， Flash had a new license tag and was being treated by a veterinarian who knew better than to ask questions. Pictures of the dog were put up on animal rescue websites， asking for someone to adopt the dog. A couple in New York offered to take the dog， and animal lovers in states along the way agreed to provide transportation.
Nobody can say for sure how many animals like Flash are ‘rescued' every year – receiving stolen property is a crime， so rescuers tend to stay in the shadows. But a growing number of empty collars attests to their work as more and more animals find their way to loving homes.

中国少年先锋队是中国少年儿童的先进组织，是在中国共产党的直接关怀下建立起来的，已有70多年的历史了。
少年儿童革命组织的发展随着中国革命形势的发展而发展，大体上可以分为五个阶段：即1924年到1927年北伐战争时期的劳动童子军；1927年到1936年土地革命战争时期的共产主义儿童团；1937年到1945年抗日战争时期的抗日儿童团；1946年到1949年建立的少年先锋队；1949年新中国成立后建立了全国统一的组织枣中国少年儿童队，后改名为中国少年先锋队。
在这70多年中，我们的少年儿童组织为中国革命和国家的建设培养了一代又一代有用之材，发挥了巨大作用。下面批们就对她的光荣历史分阶段加以介绍：
劳动童子团
二三十年代的中国是一个半殖民地半封建的国家，内忧外患，人民过着穷困不堪的生活，大部分少年儿童连饭都吃不饱，更不要说上学了。他们小小年纪就去种地、做工，或者给有钱人当奴婢，过着非人的生活。
1924年，新生的中国共产党和国民党合作，进行北伐战争，要把不合理的制度推翻。在领导工农大众闹革命的同时，党在武汉、上海、天津、唐山、广东、湖南、江西、海南等许多地方建立了劳动童子团，吸收了大批重工、学徒、贫苦儿童和小学生加入进来。
共青团受党的委托领导劳动重于团的工作。1926年，共青团第三次扩大会议上所做的决议中明确规定：教育儿童，养成他们勇敢牺牲的精神和团体生活的习惯，训练他们将来成为继续革命的战士，是共青团的重要使命。
在共青团的直接领导下，劳动童子团发展很快，取得了很大的成绩。
在城市，劳动童子团员们跟随父兄参加反抗资本家剥削的罢工斗争，参加反对帝国主义和军阀的示威斗争。他们的口号是：“准备着打倒帝国主义！准备着打倒军阀！准备着做全世界的主人！”
在乡村，劳动童子团在斗土豪、查赌博、破迷信等活动中发挥了积极作用。
正当劳动童子团蓬勃发展时，1927年，背叛了革命的蒋介石发动了血腥的“四一二”反革命政变，大批革命志上、共产党人惨遭杀害，革命遭到极大破坏，劳动童子团的发展也被迫转入低潮。
共产儿童团
周恩来、朱德等领导的南昌起义（1927年），打响了反抗反动派的第一枪。紧接着，在毛泽东同志领导下，举行了秋收起义，创建了工农红军，开辟了农村革命根据地，中国革命走上了农村包围城市的正确道路。
在1927年至1936年土地革命战争时期，党在革命根据地枣苏维埃地区，为少年儿童建立了共产儿童团，党委托共青团领导共产儿童团。
1930年，共青团五届三中全会召开。全会在决议案中指出，儿童运动的性质是“共产主义儿童运动”，任务是“以共产主义精神教育儿童”，口号是“准备着，时时刻刻准备着”。
共青团从中央到各级团部，都设立儿童局，领导儿童团工作。苏区儿童普遍参加了共产儿童团，在共青团领导下，积极参加学习和各种革命活动。
当时儿童团的一个重要任务，就是经过宣传动员，使绝大多数儿童都进入列宁小学学习。同时，每年的儿童节，共产儿童团都要举行大检阅，检阅学习成绩、野外演习和游戏等，生动有趣，又富有教育意义，很受儿童欢迎。
儿童团员们还积极响应党的号召，宣传扩大红军，开展拥军优属活动，形式活泼多样。比如湖南、江西的儿童团员组织了扇子队，在红军队伍休息时，给红军战士送水打扇。儿童团组织的“少共星期六”义务劳动，主要是帮助红军家属做些力所能及的劳动，也很有意义和影响。
同时，在保卫苏区的战斗中，共产儿童团组织中还涌现了许多英勇献身的少年英雄，留下了许多可歌可泣的故事。
抗日儿童团
1937年至 1945年，是中国历史上波谰壮阔的抗日战争时期，党领导下的许多抗日根据地都成立了抗日儿童团的组织。
抗日儿童团员们在青年救国会的领导下，积极参加抗日救国斗争，他们同抗日军民一道，广泛参加各种抗日活动，十分活跃。
抗日儿童团的任务是：宣传大家打日本；侦察敌情抓汉奸；站岗放哨送书信；尊敬抗战官和兵；帮助抗属来做事；学习生产不稍停。
从东北的黑土地到晋西北的黄土高原，从苏北地区到陕甘宁边区，到处活跃着抗日儿童团员们的身影。
到1940年，陕甘宁边区有7万儿童团员，苏北解放区有18万少年队和儿童团员，华北抗日根据地有60万儿童团员，他们是当时抗日儿童团的主力。
其中，最为活跃和出色的是晋察冀边区的儿童团，他们站岗放哨、捉汉奸、送情报，利用自己年纪小，不被注意的特点，深入敌后，出色地完成任务。在晋冀一带，直到现在仍流传着放羊小英雄王二小把日本鬼子引进八路军包围圈的故事。晋察冀边区抗日儿童团还开展了“五不运动”：不给敌人带路；不给敌人送信；不吃敌人的糖；不念敌人的书；不告诉敌人藏粮的地方。
解放战争时期的少先队、儿童团
1945年8月，日本帝国主义投降，中国的抗日战争经过8年奋战，终于取得了伟大胜利。
面对胜利果实，蒋介石掉转枪口，疯狂抢夺。人民不会答应反动派继续骑在头上作威作福，在中国共产党的领导下，经过3年多的解放战争，终于推翻了压在中国人民头上的三座大山，取得了解放战争的伟大胜利。
在人民解放战争中，党领导的解放区的少先队、儿童团和国民党统治区的地下少先队，都做出了自己的贡献。
1946年，蒋介石反动军队进攻解放区，陕甘宁边区儿童团和晋绥边区儿童团开展了军事操练，站岗放哨，救护伤员，积极支前。同时，他们还在解放区的土改运动中斗争地主，看守财物，筹集粮食物资，为前线将土做了许多后勤工作。
在敌占区，党的地下组织建立了报童近卫军、铁木儿团等地下少先队组织。他们秘密印发传单，张贴标语，宣传革命形势。他们还巧入敌人心脏，刺探情报提供给解放军。
解放战争时期的少先队员和儿童团员们在战争中成长，在战争中锻炼，真正达到了晋绥边区 1946年建立少先队组织时在队章中规定的培养目标，即“培养少年儿童一代，提高其文化、政治水平，发展其学习各种技能和社会知识，为独立、自由、民主、统一和富强的新中国培养人才”。
新中国的中国少年先锋队
1949年10月1日，鲜艳的五星红旗在天安门前冉冉升起，中华人民共和国诞生了，中国人民从此站起来了！·新中国的诞生为少年儿童一代的健康成长开辟了道路，为少年儿童工作的顺利开展提供了条件。
早在1949年1月，中共中央就颁布了（关于建立中国新民主主义青年团的决议）。在决议中把建立新中国的少年儿童组织列为团的四项任务之一。10月，中国新民主主义青年团中央委员会正式颁布（关于建立中国少年儿童队的决议）。1953年6月，又改名为中国少年先锋队。
少先队继承了革命战争年代儿童团的优良传统，以红领巾作为自己的标志，象征着革命的胜利。少先队员们在党团的领导下，以“时刻准备着，为共产主义事业而奋斗！”作为自己的呼号，投入了火热的革命和生产学习中去：
解放初期，在土地改革、镇压反革命、抗美援朝运动中都可以看到少先队员们活跃的身影。他们参加控诉会，参观上改展览会，放哨监督地主分子；他们通过读报和讨论，知道暗藏的反动分子还要伺机破坏革命，所以一定要擦亮眼睛，提高警惕；为了支援志愿军，少先队员们纷纷给志愿军叔叔写慰问信，寄贺年卡，还用劳动所得捐献“红领巾”号飞机，为保家卫国贡献一份力量。
在三反五反斗争中，许多少先队员参加了“要爱护公物，要爱惜时间，要艰苦朴素，不要损人利己，不要浪费，不要贪小便宜和拿别人的东西”为内容的三要三不要活动。在第一个五年计划期间，少先队开展了“小五年计划”活动，收集废金属，捐献拖拉机，种树、种植油料，支援社会主义建设。
1963年，毛主席发出“向雷锋同志学习”的伟大号召，少先队积极行动起来，学习雷锋同志全心全意为人民服务的精神，做好事不留姓名，毫不利己、专门利人。同时，少先队还广泛地经常性地开展了除四害、讲卫生、植树造林等活动，都收到了很好的效果。
但是，史无前例的“文化大革命”期间，少先队组织遭到了摧残，少先队的名称也被取消了，代之而起的是具有错误的组织性质、违背少年儿童的成长规律和工作规律的“红小兵”组织。
十年内乱结束后，共青团十届一中全会恢复了中国少年先锋队的名称，少先队工作又重新活跃起来，在全国范围内广泛开展了“我们爱科学”、“大种蓖麻，支援四化”、“五讲四美”等生动有趣、富有教育意义的活动，培养了一代“面向现代化、面向世界、面向未来”的新人。
儿童节，也叫"六一国际儿童节"，每年的6月1日举行，是全世界少年儿童的节日。
1949年11月，国际民主妇女联合会在莫斯科举行理事会议，中国和各国代表愤怒地揭露了帝国主义分子和各国反动派残杀、毒害儿童的罪行。为了保障世界各国儿童的生存权、保健权和受教育权，为了改善儿童的生活，会议决定以每年的6月1日为国际儿童节。
在此以前，世界上的许多国家就有儿童节。1925年，国际儿童幸福促进会倡议建立儿童纪念日，英国、美国、日本等国积极响应，先后建立了自己国家的儿童节，英国规定每年的7月14日为儿童节，美国规定5月1日为儿童节。日本的儿童节很特殊，分男女儿童节，男儿童节5月5日、女儿童节3月3日。我国在1931年也曾经规定4月4日为中国儿童节。
