佛用英语翻译为Buddha，这个字来自梵文。
梵语（英文：Sanskrit language，天城体书写：संस्कृता वाक्，拉丁字母转写：saṃskṛtā vāk, 简称 संस्कृतम्，saṃskṛtam），印度的古典语言。佛教称此语为佛教守护神梵天所造，因此称其为梵语/梵文。现代语言学研究表明，梵语是印欧语系的印度-伊朗语族的印度-雅利安语支的一种语言，是印欧语系最古老的语言之一，同时对汉藏语系有很大的影响。
梵语是现今印度国家法定的22种官方语言之一，但已经不是日常生活的交流语言，2001年仅有1.4万人掌握该语言，是印度官方语言中使用人数最少的语言。严格意义上说，梵语与拉丁文、古代汉语一样，已经成为语言学研究的活化石。
