『肆』 长篇英语文章翻译,会的救命~
A sleepless night on Earth
Strange events unfolded in a rural village in Northeast Hebei for three days. The well water in the village rose and fell mysteriously, while deep cracks appeared in the walls, emitting a foul odor. In the farmyards, chickens, and even pigs became extremely nervous, running out of their pens to find hiding places, and fish leaped out of their bowls and ponds. At around 3 PM on July 28, 1976, some witnesses saw bright lights in the sky and heard the sound of aircraft above the city of Tangshan, even though there were no planes in the sky in that city. That night, as the residents of this city of a million people lay asleep, these events seemed insignificant.
At 3:42 PM, the ground began to shake violently, heralding what seemed like the end of the world. An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8, one of the most powerful in the 20th century, struck the city, which was located over 200 kilometers from Beijing. A third of the country felt the quake's impact. A massive fissure, 8 kilometers long and 30 meters wide, tore through homes, roads, and canals, steam rising as the ground opened up. In just 15 terrifying seconds, a bustling city was reced to rubble. The devastation was immense, with over two-thirds of the population dead or injured, amounting to over 400,000 victims.
Survivors could hardly believe the devastation that lay before them. Virtually every hospital in the city was destroyed, along with 75% of its factories and 90% of its homes. The bricks layered on the ground resembled the red leaves of autumn, but without the gentle breeze that usually rustles them. Most bridges had collapsed or were unsafe to cross. Now, railway steel tracks lay useless, thousands of cattle failed to provide milk, and half a million pigs and tens of thousands of chickens died. Wells were filled with sand, and people were left in shock. Then, late that night, another powerful earthquake, almost as strong as the first, struck Tangshan, trapping rescuers and doctors under the rubble, causing further buildings to collapse, and making it difficult to obtain water, food, and electricity. People began to doubt how long the disaster would continue.
Hope was not entirely lost after the earthquake. The Ministry of National Defense sent soldiers to Tangshan to assist in the rescue efforts. Thousands of people, including the military, organized teams to dig out the trapped and buried dead. To the north of the city, over 10,000 miners were saved from the collapsed coal mine, where they had been working. Survivors organized to rebuild their shelters. Fresh water was brought into the city by trains, trucks, and planes. Slowly, the city began to rise from the ruins and重建.
