应一位读者的要求，今天我们来讲一下“接地气”的英文：down to earth.

“接地气”这个说法好像是最近五六年才开始流行起来的，原本在汉语中“接地气”指的是中医认为人应该多走路，多与土地接触，以接通人体气场和土地。中医有“水土不服”的说法，指的就是这个意思。用英语表达水土不服可以说 not acclimated to the food and water.

现在大陆汉语接地气的意思一般是“不脱离实际、接近生活、或者不高冷等“，用英语说就是down to earth.

其实我觉得英语的down to earth比“接地气”含义更丰富，也更好理解。

英语释义是：Practical or humble; unpretentious; reasonable, simple, realistic, sensible and pragmatic

上面这几个注释的词很好，合在一起基本就包含了down to earth的全部意思了。我们可以分别来看。

down to earth可以指一个人很谦虚(humble)，不吹嘘，很务实(practical)，不脱离实际满嘴跑火车；也可以指一个人不装逼(unpretentious)，很通情达理(reasonable)，不胡搅蛮缠；也可以指一个人很简单(simple)不故意装复杂;或者很实际(realistic)不好高骛远；或者很明事理很切合实际(sensible）或很实用主义(pragmatic），这些特质其实都是down to earth的意思。你对照一下，其实大陆汉语的“接地气”也是这些意思。

这句话该怎么翻译？

说实话，这句话离开了上下文语境是很难翻译的。

佛老不喜欢“接地气”这个词，太俗，语义不明也不雅，作为民间俗语和俚语可以，堂而皇之出现在正式文书中就不妥了。

写到这里，佛老想起一件往事来。

学生时代有一次接了个口译的活，雇佣方是某国驻沪领馆的大使，会面的对象是上海的某位市级领导。双方共进午餐时，领导大人说起自己去过领事先生国家的某个城市，说“那里的建筑很有特色”。领导身边的翻译说"The buildings there have got features." 我这边的大使先生懵了，pardon了一遍还是不明白。我坐他身边，小声跟他把对方翻译的英语再翻译了一下说：He says the buildings in xx are very special. 大使先生明白了，说哈哈是吗你喜欢吗？宾主谈话继续。

想到这段小往事是因为佛老当年作过很多翻译，口译笔译都很多。有一个深深的感悟，翻译这件事，最重要的还不是译员的词汇量有多大，而是对上下文语境的理解，否则翻译出来肯定错。
