一般现在时是动词的原形，当主语是第三人称单数时，动词则用第三人称单数现在时，一般由动词原形加-es构成，be动词的现在时是am、is、are，而have的单数为has。
一般过去时，是把动词变成过去式。动词变成过去式时，规则动词在原形动词后加-ed，以-e结尾的动词只加-d，而辅音字母加y结尾的动词，则把y变成i加ed，如果是重读闭音节结尾的动词，短元音后面只有一个辅音字母，先双写这个辅音字母再加-ed。如果以辅音字母c结尾的动词，则先加上k，再加上-ed。
