战国的时候，赵惠文王有一块叫做「楚和氏璧」的宝玉，被秦国的昭王知道了，昭王便派了位使臣到赵国来跟惠文王商量：「惠文王，我们秦国愿意以十五个城池，和赵国换取这块「楚和氏璧」的宝玉。」

惠文王一听：「这该如何是好呀？秦国这么强大，如果把宝玉交给秦昭王，他要是耍赖，不把十五个城池给我们；如果不给，秦昭王会不会一气之下派兵来打我们，到底该怎么办才好？」大家看到惠文王这么烦恼，就有人提议：「我们去请智勇双全的蔺相如来，他一定会想到好办法的。」

蔺相如来了之后，惠文王第一句话就问他：「秦国要用十五个城来交换我的楚和氏璧，你看我应不应该答应他呢？」蔺相如毫不迟疑的说：「秦国强，赵国弱，我认为您不答应也不行呀！」「可是，假如秦国拿了我的璧玉，却不把城池给我，那我该怎么办？」惠文王忧心地问。蔺相如马上接口说：「秦国要拿十五个城池来交换赵国的楚和氏璧，假如赵国不答应，那当然是赵国的错；反过来，若秦国得到了璧玉，却不把城池给赵国，那错就在于秦国了。因此，照我的看法，还是派人将璧玉送到秦国去比较好。」

蔺相如到了秦国以后，见到了秦昭王，便把璧玉奉上。秦昭王一见到璧玉后，高兴地不得了。不断地把璧玉捧在手上仔细欣赏，又把它传给左右的侍臣和嫔妃们看，却都不提起十五个城池交换的事。蔺相如一看情形不对，马上向前对秦王说：「大王，这块璧玉虽然是稀世珍宝，但仍有些微的瑕玭，请让我指引给大王看看！」

五天过去了，秦王果真以很隆重的礼节接待蔺相如。蔺相如一见秦王便说：「大王，秦国自秦缪公以来，二十多位君王，很少有遵守信约的人，所以我害怕受骗，已差人将璧玉送回赵国！如果大王真的要用城池来交换楚和氏璧，就请先割让十五个城池给赵国，赵王一当遵守誓约将玉璧奉上。现在，就请大王处置我吧！」 秦昭王一听璧玉已经被送回赵国，心里虽然很生气，却也佩服蔺相如的英勇，不但没有杀他，还以礼相待，送他回赵国。

渑池会见
公元前282年，秦国派大将白起攻取了赵国的简（今山西离石县西）和祁（今山西祁县）两块地方。次年，秦国又派兵攻占了赵国的石城（今河南朴县西南）；又过了一年，再向赵国进攻，两国交战，赵国损失了两万多军队，但秦军的攻势也被遏止了。

公元前279年（赵惠文王二十年），秦昭王想和赵国讲和，以便集中力量攻击楚国，于是派使者到赵国，约赵王在西河外的渑池（今河南渑池县境内）见面，互修友好。赵王害怕，想不去，大将军廉颇和上大夫蔺相如商议，认为赵王推辞不去不好，就劝赵王去：“秦王约您会议，如果大王不去，那就显得赵国力小而胆怯了，还是去好。”赵王听从了廉、蔺二人的建议，蔺相如也随着赵王一起去了。

廉颇带领大军把赵王送到边境，临分手。对赵王说：“这次大王去渑池，路上来回的行程，加上会见的时间，估计前后不会超过三十天。为了防止意外，要是过了这个日期大王还未回来，请允许我们立太子为王，以断绝秦国扣留大王要挟赵国的念头。”赵王同意了。廉颇还在边境上布置了大量的军队，防备秦国的进攻。

负荆请罪

战国时代，赵惠文王因蔺相如办外交有功，拜蔺相如为上卿，官位在廉颇大将之上。廉颇因此心中不快，觉得自己功劳卓著，很不服气，扬言要当面侮辱蔺相如。相如知道后，不愿意和廉颇争位次先后，便处处留意，避让廉颇，上朝时假称有病，以便回避。 有一次，蔺相如乘车外出，远远望见廉颇的车子迎面而来，急忙叫手下人把车赶到小巷里避开。相如手下的人便以为相如害怕廉颇，非常气愤。蔺相如对他们解释说；“秦国这样强大，我都不怕，廉将军又有什么可怕呢？所以我想，强横的秦国今天之所以不敢对我们赵国轻易用兵，只是因为赵国有我和廉将军两人。如果我和廉将军两人不能和睦相处，互相攻击，像老虎一样相斗，结果必定有一虎受伤，秦国就会趁机侵略赵国。我所以对廉将军避让，是因为我把国家的安危放在前头，不计较私人的怨恨。”
