“重大校训曾经过3次改动，如今的校训出自重大1936年实施的《重庆大学训育及管理方法》。”重大校史办主任卢培煜介绍，上世纪二三十年代，西南地区人才匮乏、文化滞后，在成都大学任教的重庆籍教授沈懋德、吴芳吉等人，倡议在重庆创建大学。
1929年，1300多名政商学界人士召开大会，表决通过筹办重庆大学，并发布《重庆大学筹备会宣言》，提出“研究学术，造就人才，佑启乡邦，振导社会”的办学宗旨。建校后，重大便以此作为第一代校训。
“诞生于风雨飘摇的年代，奠定了重大‘耐劳苦、尚俭朴’的品格。”曾担任重大第三任校史办主任的张志芳告诉记者，学校创办之初，正逢抗日民主运动蓬勃发展之际，1936年，学校颁布《重庆大学训育及管理方法》，明确提出“训育学生之标准为：耐劳苦，尚俭朴，勤学业，爱国家……”
