The FIFA World Cup™ ended up in Italian hands in 2006 after an Azzurri triumph that owed everything to teamwork. The abiding memory of the Final at Berlin's Olympic Stadium may be of Zinedine Zidane's meltdown, the France veteran earning an red card for headbutting Marco Materazzi, but there was much to admire about the Italian effort that earned them a fourth world crown.
Led by coach Marcello Lippi, who had enjoyed great success with Juventus, and seemingly galvanised by the match-fixing scandal unfolding back at home, the Italians' quality was enhanced by an obvious camaraderie. Twenty-one of their 23-man squad played and ten of them found the net at these finals.
With a defence built around goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and captain Fabio Cannavaro, Italy defended as well as anyone in FIFA World Cup history, conceding just two goals - one an own goal, the other a penalty. The silk-and-steel midfield combination of Andrea Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso also caught the eye, as did the swashbuckling raids of full-backs Gianluca Zambrotta and Fabio Grosso.
Italy lay ghosts to rest
It was the Grosso's goal that swung a superb semi-final against Germany the Italians' way and his spot-kick that sealed victory in the Final shoot-out after a 1-1 draw. Remarkably, it was the Azzurri's first victory on penalties, laying to rest the ghosts of three past failures on the world stage - notably in the 1994 final.
But this FIFA World Cup was not simply an Italian success story. Jurgen Klinsmann's young Germany side took third place on the back of an attractive brand of high-tempo, attacking football. The hosts finished as top scorers with 14 goals - five of them from adidas Golden Shoe winner Miroslav Klose and three from Lukas Podolski, the Gillette Best Young Player.
More than anything, Klinsmann's Nationalmannschaft captured the spirit of Germany 2006. If the old stereotype of dour German efficiency was dismantled by their team's youthful vibrancy on the pitch, off it the German public gave real meaning to the tournament motto 'A time to make friends'. Huge numbers congregated in fan parks across the country and the host country displayed unstinting generosity towards its many visitors.
The month of football in Germany captivated not just the 3,359,439 spectators attending matches in the 12 magnificent stadiums (and Fan Fest millions) but also an estimated worldwide audience of more than 30 billion people. All looked on as a cast list incorporating 32 teams from Angola to the USA conspired to excite, enthral and occasionally exasperate ring a 64-match, 147-goal marathon.
Zidane rolls back the years
They had plenty to savour, including the sight of Zidane rolling back the years to help Raymond Domenech's France see off Spain and Brazil en route to Berlin. The 33-year-old's efforts earned him the adidas Golden Ball but although he found the net against Italy, eight years after scoring twice in the 1998 Final, there was no happy ending.
Portugal's flying winger Cristiano Ronaldo was another indivial to shine as his team reached the last four for the first time since 1966. In losing to France, however, Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari fell just short of reaching a second successive Final following his 2002 triumph with Brazil.
Although the semi-finals were an all-European affair, other nations gave notable performances. Before succumbing on penalties to Germany, Argentina provided some sparkling football and scored the best 'team' goal when Esteban Cambiasso concluded a 24-man passing move in their 6-0 humbling of Serbia and Montenegro. And possibly the best indivial goal too, in Maxi Rodriguez's stunning volley that beat a strong Mexico team.
African pride
The African newcomers had reason for pride also. Côte d'Ivoire gave Argentina and the Netherlands scares despite losing to both, Angola earned draws with Mexico and Iran, and an attack-minded Ghana team driven by Stephen Appiah and Michael Essien beat the Czech Republic and USA before going down to Brazil in the Round of 16.
Other highlights included tiny Trinidad and Tobago holding Sweden to a goalless draw on their finals debut; Ecuador beating Poland and Costa Rica to reach the second round for the first time; and the spirited Australians fighting back to beat Japan with three goals in the last ten minutes on their way to the last 16. Credit too to Switzerland's defence which went unbreached in their four matches.
Inevitably, there were also disappointments. Although Ronaldo entered the record books with his 15th FIFA World Cup goal, Brazil's star names underachieved, despite reaching the last eight, and the same applied to England. The Asian teams failed to build on their breakthrough displays in 2002 and headed home early. As the tournament progressed, the knockout stages proved low on goals - Germany 2006 had the lowest goals average since 1990 - and also surprises, save possibly for Ukraine's progress to the quarter-finals. There they lost to Italy but there was no shame in that. Cannavaro and Co would prove worthy winners.

good morning!
Today, my speech is "I am the part of the Green Olympics".
"Green Olympics" is one of the Three Themes of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Therefore the Beijing government had made a great effort in order to protect the environment, build more "Green project", keep the ecological balance, push the recycling economy, and protect the water resource. But if only the government take the action to realize the Green Olympics in 2008, its not enough. As a Beijing high school student, we should play an active role in the actions aimed at the realization of Green Olympics. So we should start it from ourselves, our family, our friends and other people around us.
In 2001, in the Moscow world trade center, when the former chairman of the International Olympic Committee, Samaranch had said: "Beijing, China!" As a Beijing citizen, as a Chinese, I had a great joy for my city, for my home country from the bottom of my heart! But after the excitement that Beijing had been succeed in the race to host the Olympic Game in 2008. I started to worry about the sty air, the sandstorm, the polluted rivers and lakes; the streets without any green and whether we could successfully host the Olympic Games in 2008.
Four years later, today, we can see 229 day blue sky in one year, we can hardly catch a glimpse of the sandstorm, groups of wild ck comes back to Shishahai Lake in the spring, and all the streets are dressed in green. All these make me deeply believe that Beijing will surely succeed in 2008! And all these achievements are not only the result that made by the Beijing government, but also by the 14 millions Beijing citizens. As one of the 14 millions normal citizens, I am also adding my contribution to our Green Olympic!
I used to have a habit, which is to take two longtime showers every day. It was a big waste of water. One day, I saw a piece of news in Beijing Daily that about the lack of the Beijing water resource. Its said every year Beijing use up about 3.7 billions cubic meter of water. But Miyun reservoir only contains 0.77 billions cubic meter of water, and Guanting reservoir only contains 0.19 billion cubic meter of water. This shows we are really short of water now! After reading this news, I start to change my habit, and only take one quick shower each day. I have calculated that if everyone economizes one cubic meter of water ring they are taking the shower in a month; the Beijing citizens will economize 14 million cubic meter of water in only one month! In 2004, as the Beijing Irrigation Apartment reported that since 2001 Beijing has succeeded in the application of hosting the Olympic game in 2008. Beijing government had started 26 programs in order to economize the water resource. After 3 years doing this, these programs have saved 0.437 billions cubic meter of water. Its as big as a four-sized Huairou reservoir! And now, in my daily life, in my family, we always think about protecting the environment and saving the resource whenever we doing what. The batteries, the aged newspapers, the empty glass bottles and all the recyclable garbage, we will classify them then put them in different trash cans; we make the most use of the nature light and shut off the electrical light conveniently; and when we shopping, we will bring a nylon bag with us instead of plastic bags; ring the feast, I do not send any card in order to protect the forest resource; after washing the clothes, we wont mp the used water but use it to flash the toilet… All in all, we should start from every little thing around us to truly realize the "Green Olympic".
I still remember clearly that in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, when Liu Xiang stood up on the award platform, he was wearing a coronet, which made by olive branch. Does this green olive branch stand for the "Green Olympic"? Olive branch is the symbol of peace, and the Olympic Game is the carrier of the "peace". We should not just simply think, "No war is the meaning of peace". "Nature and human beings living in harmony" is also the root meaning of "peace". "Save the resource, protect the environment", this kind action of pursuing "Nature and human beings living in harmony", is the way that shows the core of the Olympian spirit. So we say, peace is the spirit of Olympic, Olympic is the carrier of peace, and "Green Olympic" means that we are standing in a higher platform to seek the peace.
So the "Green Olympic" should be started from every little things in our daily life, start form me, from the people that around me. Express the spirit of Olympic, publicize the theme of "Green Olympic", and let Beijing really reaches the "Green Olympic" in 2008. This is the responsibility of anyone who loves peace. And it is also the responsibility of our Beijing high school students!

尊敬的各位评委们、女士们、先生们：
大家好！今天我演讲的题目是"绿色奥运我参与"。
绿色奥运是北京2008年奥运会的三大理念之一。为此北京市政府无论是在环境的治理、绿化的建设、生态的保护、循环经济和水资源的保护与利用，都做了大量的工作。但实现"绿色奥运"仅仅靠政府行为是远远不够的，作为北京的中学生更应该积极的投身到"绿色奥运"的建设与宣传当中去。从我做起，从我的家庭做起，从我身边的朋友、同学做起。
2001年，当前国际奥委会主席萨马兰奇在莫斯科高声宣读："Beijing， China"的时候，作为一个北京人，一个中国人，我发自心底的为我们的祖国，我们的首都感到高兴。但在高兴之余，那灰蒙蒙的天空，那漫天的沙尘暴，那污绿的护城河，那见不到一丝绿色的街道，又使我深为北京能否在2008年成功办好奥运而感到担心。
四年之后的今天，一年之中有了229天湛蓝的天空，那滚滚的黄尘也早已不见，那一群群久违的野鸭也在春天飞回了北京的什刹海，街道也被绿色装点的生机勃勃。这一切不知不觉的变化都在回答着我，北京一定能办好2008年的奥运！而所有这些变化不仅仅是北京市政府的努力，更是在政府领导下的无数北京市民们努力的结果。作为这一千多万普通北京市民的一员，我也在为我们的绿色奥运贡献出自己的一份力量。
以前我曾有个习惯，每天早晚冲澡两次，而且冲洗时间特别长，很浪费水。一天，我在北京日报上看到了一则关于北京水资源短缺的文章，说北京市每年用水量大概是37亿立方米，而密云水库的蓄水量仅有7.7亿立方米，官厅水库的蓄水量仅有1.9亿立方米，水资源的供需矛盾十分尖锐。看到这则报道后，我开始改变我的习惯，每天只洗一次澡，尽量在很短的时间内洗完。我算了一笔帐，每人每月洗澡节约一吨水，北京市1400万人口将节约1400万吨水。据北京市水利局2003年统计数字表明，从2001年申办奥运成功后，开始实施市政府制定的26项节水措施，3年来节水达到4.37亿立方米，相当于4个怀柔水库。现在，在我的生活中，在我的家庭里，环保、节约的思想和行为时常都有体现。电池、报纸、玻璃瓶、油壶等可回收物，我们是分别处理、存放；购物、买菜的口袋使用尼龙口袋，基本不使用塑料袋；洗衣的水重复使用于冲洗马桶……而实现绿色奥运也正是应该从身边的这些小事做起。
我们清楚的记得在2004年的雅典奥运会上，当刘翔登上领奖台时，他头上戴了一个由橄榄枝编成的头环。这绿色的橄榄枝不正是代表着"绿色奥运"吗？橄榄枝象征着和平，而奥运正是传递"和平"的载体，我们不能简单的理解"没有战争就是和平"。"人与自然和谐相处"也是"和平"最本质的含义。"节约资源、保护环境"这种追求"人与自然和谐相处"的具体行为正是奥林匹克精神的具体体现。所以我们说：和平是奥运的灵魂，奥运是和平的载体，绿色奥运是我们从更高的境界在追求和平。当伟大的精神被"平凡"广泛的具体化以后，这种精神就被弘扬和光大了。
看来"绿色奥运"应该从点滴做起，从我做起，从我周边的人做起。弘扬奥林匹克精神，宣传绿色奥运理念，让2008北京奥运真正做到"绿色奥运"。这正是每一个爱好和平、追求和平人们的义不容辞的责任。也是我们北京中学生的一种思想境界和追求。

光阴似箭，日月如梭。2008年8月8日，全世界的目光将再次聚集北京，奥运会的圣火在它的故乡熄灭，又将在神秘的东方燃起，这又是一次四年的等待和期盼，是人类历史上的又一次飞跃。从奥林匹亚到万里长城，从浪漫的雅典到神奇的北京，一切尽在不言之中。我们一直在启盼着、聆听着、感受着，启盼着奥运盛会，聆听着奥运脚步，感受着奥运精神，不是每个人都有机会站在奥运的舞台上，但是，奥运精神却在每个人的心理落地生根，不知从何时起“更快、更高、更强”已成为我心中座右铭，在我的心中这也将是一个属于自己的奥运盛会。如今圣火、五环、中国印……将紧紧连在一起，我仿佛已经看到竞技场上运动员奋力拼搏，听到他们的呐喊，战胜自我、超越自我，是奥林匹克运动的奋斗精神。

北京奥运会将是传承和丰富奥运精神的盛会，“绿色奥运、科技奥运、人文奥运”的承办理念体现了中国人民对奥运的期盼和对奥运精神的理解延伸，将现代奥林匹克思想和中华民族的灿烂文化相结合，在创造奥运物质遗产的同时，努力创造宝贵的奥运精神遗产。
北京奥运会将是各国各地区人民交流友谊的盛会，更是人类热爱和平庄严宣示的大会，促进了“和平、友谊、进步”的目标，将奥运精神发扬光大。

每当我看体育新闻的时候，我总能听到"超越梦想，一起飞，你我需要真心面对……"的振奋人心的歌声。屏幕上火炬在传递者手中熊熊燃烧，万众瞩目，而我的心也已消融在这圣火之中，我向往着奥运，期待着奥运，热爱着奥运！
奥运会起源于希腊，听妈妈说，在旧中国，奥运会与中国无缘，在西方人眼里，“东亚病夫”就是中国人的代名词。现在我们中国人不同了，不仅参加了奥运会，而且得了很多金牌。奥林匹克的体育精神是更快、更高、更强，我是多么希望我们中国在2008年的北京奥运会上夺得的金牌总数是世界第一呀！可是，要实现这个梦想是多么的不容易呀，它需要全体中国人的共同努力，尤其是运动健儿的刻苦训练。

我和奥运一起飞翔
二零零八年奥运会就要在我们的首都北京举办了。现在，全国人民都在为奥运会做准备，做贡献，我也很想为奥运会做点儿什么呢！
记得有一次，我去帮爸爸买报纸，无意中发现了报纸上征集二零零八年奥运会会标的启示。看到这个消息后，我兴奋地跑回家，把这件事告诉了爸爸妈妈。爸爸妈妈听了后，积极鼓励我参加这次活动。在爸爸妈妈的帮助下，我们设计出了第一款奥运会会标。当时我们又高兴又激动。接着又是第二种、第三种……一周之后，我们全家人设计出好几种又美丽又有意义的奥运会会标。经过层层筛选，我们最后选中了一张风筝图案的会标，象征着我能和奥运一起飞翔。然后，我拜托爸爸帮我把我们的设计方案寄给奥运筹办委员会。在此后的一段时间里，我每天都关注着二零零八年奥运会的筹办情况。终于，奥运会会标征集有了结果。那是一个中国印—“舞动的北京”。虽然我们的设计方案没有被选上，但是能为我们的奥运献计献策，我已经觉得无比骄傲了。
从这以后，我时刻关注着奥运会的动态。
过了几天，我又在电视上看见了征集这次奥运会吉祥物设计方案的广告。我又有了兴趣。这次，我同样得到了爸爸妈妈的大力支持。晚上，我们全家人在一起商量着，设计着。最后，我们设计出一只飞向五环的大雁，象征着我的心与二零零八、与奥运一起飞翔。在全国人民的积极参与和期盼中，奥运会的吉祥物—福娃诞生了。它们分别是小鱼贝贝、大熊猫晶晶、圣火欢欢、藏羚羊迎迎、京燕妮妮，这是一个可爱的福娃小家庭。虽然我们的设计又落选了，但是我们也从心底喜欢这五个象征北京奥运，象征我们自己的奥运福娃。

我曾大胆设想自己是一名代表祖国去参加奥运会的选手。但理想和现实相差太远了。看来这个梦想只有长大了才能实现吧！我又想现在不是有小志愿者吗，作为志愿者可以与外国朋友交谈，介绍我们祖国美好的山河和发达的科技。那是多么美好的画面啊！又仔细一想：“以我现在的英语水平是不够啊！”所以我报了一个英语班，努力学好英语争取争当合格的志愿者。但我现在什么贡献都不能为奥运做，我急得无计可施。突然我又想出了一条妙计。
