在发生肉体关系时为了避免感染怪异的疾病，套在男性阴茎上的东西成为condom(保险套 )。这个名称的由来是这样的：在十七世纪，也是英国控制印度的时期，精锐军the Grenadier Guards(近卫步兵)中有一位叫Condom的上校，他用印度产的胶皮发明预防性病用的套子，因此而取名为condom。
据说法国军队攻占阿尔及利亚的同时，这个condoms of gum elastic(有伸缩性的橡皮制保险套)也就很快地传到全非洲。到十九世纪末，在开罗或亚历山大城等非洲的大都市就已经制成橡皮制保险套了。
这种保险套有很多不同的名称。大概各位读者已经知道French letter就是指这种东西，不知道为什么法国的信会含有这样的意思。可是French似乎和爱神有很大的关系，例如说French kiss就不是普通那种只碰一下嘴唇的高雅行为，而是“使舌尖纠缠在一起的deep kiss ”， 进一步有用来指“上”与“下”的接吻 oral intercourse，这种行为又称为French way(法国式)。Let's have it French way. (让我们按法国式做吧。) 如果她在床上对你这样说， 希望不要误解这句话的意思了。
还有 French postcard(法国风景明信片)这句话的意思已经不是指在巴黎等地出售的观光风景明信片，常当做“春宫照片”的意思使用，最后是不要使用吧。
还有一种称呼是English capote，capote是指“有头巾的长外套”。不错， 保险套的形状就好象是前端有“头巾”，也许和英国人穿的capote特别相似。
据说还有bad umbrella(不好的雨伞)之称呼， 这种雨伞遇到狂风暴雨不是破了就是坏了。原以为已经做好了预防，可是过分的兴奋，如“狂风暴雨”般的动作时，会破裂的就是保险套。此外也看过cuirass against pleasure(快乐的防身衣) 或cobwebs against infection(防止感染的蜘蛛网)等名称。

前面说过在美国作为避孕contraception的方法，中等阶层以上的人较喜欢用女性的使用的东西更甚于保险套，而且各地都有birth control bureau(生育计划局)，会很详细指导使用的方法。一到那地方首先会介绍各种方法和用具，有下列：
Tampon, Sponge, Collar-button, Butterfly Pessary, Thimble, Silk ring, Coil.
与这些用具同时使用的是Contraceptive jelly(避孕膏)。而且在性行为之后要做douche。如果是在法国就可用bidet清洗，但在美国是用douche 袋，也就是“有注水器”的袋子清洗。
近年来的美国小说描写的性行为越来越详尽， 常常会出现过去的小说看不到的，也就是字典上没有的字。

在小说中常会看到这样的句子。譬如sticky liquid(粘粘的液体)原来是指“精液”，这类令人惊讶的形容法有很多。
如果忘记这样的用具或不使用时，男人必须在“射精前”停止， 也是一种礼貌。
在欧美，不论是美国或法国，男性都会遵守这种礼貌。 对此他们通常使用拉丁语的Coitus Interruptus(中断性交)。
可是在美国的良家子女往往也不知道这种话，最近成为美国的畅销书， 也拍成电影的小说《同志》中， 有一位名叫迪克的虚无主义的男人和处女发生性行为后对她说：
I just employed the most ancient form of birth control Coitus Interruptus, as the Romans called it. (我刚才使用最古老的避孕法， 那就是古代罗马人所称的性交中断法。)

下面引用原文给各位作参考。这部小说是非常高级的小说家梅丽·麦卡西的作品，但还是到处可看到这样露骨的形容。
