聽,說,讀,寫,是學習語言最自然的過程, 就像我們從小學母語一樣. 所以學英語也該先從聽,說入手. 這里先不談聽力，, 單談「說」.
首先, 需要選一本好的口語教材. 大家不要小看教材的作用. 我所居住的大學已為該校教師開辦多期口語班, 均由外教授課, 但幾乎沒有一期是成功的. 原因就在於高估了該校教師的口語水平, 從來沒有採用基礎的口語教材系統教授. 可憐這些碩士博士, 包括GRE高分者, 到現在還不會開口說英語. 外教就更不幸, 每次問「Any volunteer?」 大家都低頭「沈默是金」, 可憐這位白鬍子老頭竟然要拋球決定由誰回答!
與「沈默是金」相反, 有人非常敢說, 隨便逮個人就亂說一氣. 我有個朋友就是這樣, 經常會問我「Do you want to talk to me tomorrow?」 (他以為他是周潤發?!) 時間他是花了不少, 英語沙龍更是每晚必到, 說得也很流利了(語速夠快), 但他的口語怎麼聽怎麼別扭. 為什麼? 就因為他只願意與人聊天, 而從不肯好好背一下他買的那一大堆口語書中的句型. (他嫌太簡單!---卻一句也背不出!)
英語絕不是你想怎麼說就怎麼說的, 很多表達都有其固定的方式, 因此想要學好口語, 就至少要學上一套系統的口語教材.
怎麼才算「系統」呢? 它應該是按情景分類, 告訴你在什麼樣的場合說什麼樣的話. 象李陽的教材就不宜作為入門教材, 句型是夠豐富了, 但沒說清楚該怎麼使用.
口語教材最好是附有相應的文化背景介紹, 因為東西方文化差異大, 同樣的場景, 用中式思維表達很可能會鬧笑話. 詳見「胡敏老師談學英語的六大策略」.
若所選教材未配有文化背景介紹, 可另外讀些相關書籍彌補.
最好選用由英美人士撰寫的經典口語教材. 如<<走遍美國>>, <<英語九○○句>>等. 象現在熱銷的<<實戰英語>>, 錯誤百出且不說, 其中居然有這樣的對話

口語教材應配有磁帶, 以便模仿, 記憶.
