當今除羅泊河次方言外，四聲因古聲母的清、濁各分化為陰、陽兩調，分化以後又有合並現象，例如湘西方言西部土語，陰入並入陰上，陽入並入陽上。語法方面，主語在謂語前，賓語在作謂語的動詞後。
