至於出生年代，姚瑩在《康輶紀行》中說她是北魏孝文帝至宣武帝時人；宋翔鳳的《過庭祿》中則說她是隋恭帝時人，程大昌的《演繁露》中則說她是唐初人。而根據北朝民歌《木蘭辭》（又作《木蘭詩》）等等的描述，對於花木蘭的歷史年代問題，目前有兩種主要的民間說法是：

第一種說法是：北魏太武帝年間，花木蘭替父從軍，參加了北魏破柔然之戰，木蘭多次參與了北魏出擊大漠兵伐柔然的戰爭，且表現突出，但卻無人發現她是女子。戰爭結束後，朝廷欲授予她尚書郎，被她婉言拒絕。

第二種說法是：這種說法來自於清朝褚人獲的小說《隋唐演義》。隋恭帝義寧年間，突厥犯邊，木蘭女扮男裝，代父從軍，征戰疆場多載，屢建功勛。後與竇線娘交戰被擒，線娘驗明她女性身份，與之結為姐妹。

祖沖之《述異記》、李亢《異志》皆提到木蘭姓花。一說為木蘭本姓朱，清康熙年間的《黃陂縣志》曰：「木蘭，本縣朱氏女，生於唐初，……假男子代父從軍，……至今其家猶在木蘭山下。」

焦竑在其《焦氏筆乘》中也說道：「木蘭，朱氏女子，代父從征。今黃州黃陂縣北七十里，即隋木蘭縣。有木蘭山、將軍冢、忠烈廟，足以補《樂府題解》之缺。」但有木蘭是姓魏的說法，也有一說為木蘭姓韓。另據《新唐書》載：「少女木蘭，姓任」。
