起風的日子，一切雲雲霧霧的朦朧氤氳全被拭凈，水光山色，纖毫悉在鏡里。原來對岸的八仙嶺下，歷歷可數，有著許多山村野店，水滸人家。半島的天氣一日數變，風驟然而來，從海口長驅直入，腳下的山谷頓成風箱，抽不盡滿壑的咆哮翻騰。蹂躪著羅漢松與蘆草，掀翻海水，吐著白浪，風是一群透明的野獸，奔踹而來，呼嘯而去。

海潮與風聲，即使撼天震地，也不過為無邊的靜加註荒情與野趣罷了。最令人心動而神往的，卻是人為的噪音。從清早到午夜，一天四十多班，在山和海之間，敲軌而來，鳴笛而去的，是九廣鐵路的客車、貨車、豬車。曳著黑煙的飄發，蟠蜿著十三節車廂的修長之軀，這些工業時代的元老級交通工具，仍有舊世界迷人的情調，非協和的超音速飛機所能比擬。山下的鐵軌向北延伸，延伸著我的心弦。我的中樞神經，一日四十多次，任南下又北上的千隻鐵輪輪番敲打，用鋼鐵火花的壯烈節奏，提醒我，藏在谷底的並不是洞里桃源，住在山上，我亦非桓景，即使王粲，也不能不下樓去：
