一旦發生地震，就可能使我們的供電、供水、供熱系統，交通系統，生活必需品供應系統，信息系統，以及醫療衛生系統遭到某種程度的破壞，影響人民的正常生活，所以，我們應該制定一個家庭防震計劃。
首先要排除室內高處的懸吊物，櫃子上、木架上垂直擺放的物品，改變其擺放位置和方式，使其不易震倒傷人。同時要清除一切易燃易爆物品。床要搬到離玻璃窗遠一些的地方。窗上貼上防碎膠條。防震用具包放在容易抓取的地方。為脫離危險，你也許只有抓取一件物品的時間，急用物品都在其中，它會幫你度過難關。這些物品中包括現金、飲用水、防流感和痢疾等的葯品。
三、學校應做好地震前的准備。
在中、小學應該普及防震知識，震區學校應有防震訓練的方案，若正在上課時發生地震，老師應馬上給學生一個簡單明確的指令，讓學生就地閉眼伏在課桌下。一個地區，在某一段時間內可能發生地震時。家庭和學校要經常溝通。震區有條件的學校應備救災物品，如：急救醫葯用品、防寒防雨用品、工具等，並按班級或教室分配，直到個人手中。
如果發生了地震怎樣保護自己呢？
一旦發生了地震，若是在外邊，千萬不要靠近樓房、煙囪、電線桿等任何可能倒塌的高大建築物或樹木，要離開橋梁、立交公路，到空曠的田野較為安全。地震雖然是造成人口傷亡的天災，但也不是不可預防的。如果能把握時機、運用防震知識就可以保護自己如地震發生前觀察到鳥、動物的異常躁動；地震發生時蹲在桌子下面都可以減輕地震帶來的傷害。可見，學習地震知識非常重要。
