百花之中開得時間最短的，一開花就凋零的，是桂花與玉蘭花；百花之中開得時間最長，並且越開越燦爛的，是山茶花和石榴花。然而，石榴開花的持久度遠遠比不上山茶的。石榴的花瓣一到起霜就會凋謝，而山茶花即使在下雪天也仍然開得那麼茂盛。這種花具有松樹和柏樹的品質，含有桃樹和李樹的風采，歷經春夏秋季都始終不變。這不幾乎是植物中的極品嗎？而且它的種類特別多，從淺紅色到深紅色，全都具備。其中淺色的，像水粉，像胭脂，像美女的臉頰，像醉酒者的面容；其中深色的，像硃砂，像火，像鮮紅的血液，像仙鶴頭頂的寶珠。真可稱得上是無論深淺濃淡，都達了美的極致，沒有絲毫的缺憾。得到這種花一二株，可以抵得上其它花的幾十株。可惜我的花園很小，各種花卉都種進來以後，就再也容納不下了。只好拿一小株種在花盆裡，放在假山怪石的一旁。唉，如果你喜歡的好東西卻不能享用,討厭的沒好的東西去又不能去掉,那跟傀儡又有什麼區別！
