1583年，西班牙傳教士門多薩拜見了羅馬教皇，當時天主教想在地廣人多的中國拓展勢力，於是要求門多薩編寫一本關於中國的書籍。
可是門多薩既不會中文，也從沒來過中國。在當時的條件下，他只能到處搜集有關中國的資料抄來抄去。於是在1585年，西班牙文的《中華大帝國史》問世。
也許因為抄來抄去，抄得門多薩自己都不滿意，於是就開始修訂。在1588年的英譯本中，第一次使用了「great wall」來稱呼長城。這本書後來被翻譯成了英文、法文、德文等版本，流傳很廣，成為西方人認識中國的啟蒙書。

門多薩到底抄了誰的書呢？
他主要抄了葡萄牙歷史學家巴洛斯在1539-1563年寫成的《亞洲史》。巴洛斯也不懂中文，也沒到過中國，可是他有個懂中文和葡文的華人奴僕做他的翻譯。在巴洛斯的《亞洲史》里，第一次提到了中國的萬里長城。只是在這本書里，「長城」並沒有和「偉大」直接關聯在一起。
巴洛斯的華人奴僕有沒有看過萬里長城不得而知，但至少，「great wall」這個詞，非常符合人們對長城的第一印象：氣勢恢弘的高大長牆。
但其實，就像初戀的根本不懂愛情，那時候的老外也根本不懂中國！
第二個問題：
為什麼「長城」不叫「長牆」？
因為「長城」的爺爺就是「城」！
「長城」的爸爸還是「城」！
他們全家都是城！
如果我們把長城分成原始型、初級型、基本型、完備型四個發展階段，或者我們乾脆就把它叫做長城的爺爺、長城的爸爸、長城自己、長城的兒子，從這一家一代更比一代強的脈絡里，你就會發現，長城他們一家真的是城，而不是牆！
3500-4000年前，長城的爺爺登場！
大約3500年-4000年前，在內蒙古赤峰市，就出現了氣勢恢宏的石城堡帶。它被歷史學家稱為夏家店下層文化。
注意，它是一個石城堡帶，可不是一個小城堡。因為在這里發現大量的石器、陶器、骨器、青銅器，甚至還發現了完整的制陶流程，說明有人長期生活於此，享受著安寧的生活。
安寧的生活少不了城牆的保護！夏家店下層文化石城群中發現的主要遺跡有城牆、馬面、壕溝、房址、院牆、灰坑、墓葬、排水設施、不明用途的石砌建築等。
石城的城牆一般依山勢而建，在開闊處修築石牆，其多呈不規則形，而且大多數都不是合圍封閉的。是不是已經有了長城的影子？

值得一提的是，這4000年前的文化遺址，城牆居然修築了馬面！
馬面是啥？
這個馬面不是閻羅殿里的牛頭馬面，而是古代城牆的馬面，也叫敵台、墩台。
馬面有長方形和半圓形兩種，它的一般寬度為 12-20米，凸出牆體外表面8-12米，間距為20-250米，一般為70米。
在戰斗中，馬面上的守軍，可以和城牆正面的守軍，形成火力交叉，讓射擊沒有死角，讓攻城的敵人無處可躲。
馬面是一個非常科學的設計。此後3000多年修建的南京明城牆，就沒有設計馬面，所以朱棣後來遷都北京，在修築北京城牆時就增加馬面的構築。

夏家店下層文化石城，起初是為了抵禦野獸侵襲，使城內居民的生命財產得到保證。隨著時代的發展，防禦對象由野獸轉變成了相鄰聚落的敵人，石城的數量與規模也隨之擴大，從而逐漸形成了今天所見到的氣勢恢宏的城堡帶。
2600多年前，長城的爸爸登場！
「長城的爺爺」，這個稱呼是我編的。
但「長城的爸爸」，卻是公認的稱呼，它就是「長城之父」——齊長城！
齊長城，顧名思義，就是齊國修建的長城，全長超過640公里，橫跨泰沂山脈，橫亘在齊魯大地，穿越8個市17個縣區，歷時170多年修建，迄今已有2600多年的歷史。

2600多年前的中國，諸侯征伐、兼並加劇。據統計在春秋戰國之間不到300年的時間內，就發生過規模不同的戰爭480多次。
從春秋時期190多個諸侯國，減少到戰國只剩下7個為主的十幾個諸侯國，戰爭的規模和次數越來越多。春秋五霸之首的齊桓公，一生滅國35個，但他還不是滅國最多的，滅國最多的是楚莊王，一生滅國36個。

為了加強防禦，長城的大家庭里新增了很多同輩：如齊長城、楚長城、秦長城、趙長城、燕長城等等，可是只有楚長城和齊長城，是在春秋時間開始修建的，其他都是戰國時才開始修建。
齊長城可謂是長城家族裡的長兄，因為「長城」之名便源於齊長城。
在日本的一家博物館，收藏著一組14件編鍾，編鍾上有61個字的銘文，銘文中提到了一位將軍的名字——驫（音「標」）羌，因此這套編鍾被稱為驫羌鍾。

驫羌鍾上的銘文記載的歷史事件：公元前404年，韓國、趙國、魏國聯合進攻齊國，一個名叫驫羌的韓國將領橫刀立馬，身先士卒，在這場戰爭中作戰勇猛，首先攻入齊國的長城。驫羌因而受到韓君、周天子的獎賞，特此鑄器表彰驫羌的卓著戰功。
這套編鍾銘文的亮點在於，最早出現有「長城」二字。
對於綿延640多公里的齊長城，作為防禦體系發展至此，已經相對完備，除了牆體，已經配備了關口、城寨、倉庫、復線以及場內外的陣地，形成了戰略縱深的防禦體系，就遠不是一道牆可以概括的了。
2000多年來，長城的晚輩陸續登場
從西周到戰國、從秦漢到明朝，萬里長城經歷了2000多年的營造，已成為完備的戰略防線體系。
秦始皇保留加固燕、趙、秦防禦北邊的舊牆，起臨洮（甘肅岷縣）至遼東。
漢長城因險制塞，以夯土長牆與不築牆連綴的墩台配合而成，向西延伸至甘肅敦煌，亭燧向西延伸至羅布泊以西的新疆庫爾勒。
明長城，明代大規模修築長城18次，東至鴨綠江，西至甘肅嘉峪關。

除此之外，晉、北魏、東魏、西魏、北齊、北周、隋、唐、宋、遼、金、元、明、清等十多個朝代，都不同規模地修築過長城。
長城已發展成為以垣牆為主體，包括城障、關隘、兵營、衛所、墩台、烽堠、道路、糧秣武庫等諸多軍事設施和生活設施在內的，龐大的國防工程體系。
雄偉的萬里長城
至此，長城已經成為一個龐大的家族。1987年長城被列為世界文化遺產名錄，長城的總長度定格在21196.18公里，這一長度不僅包括雄偉的八達嶺長城、從嘉峪關到山海關的萬里長城，也包括齊長城等。
