❸ 純干貨|英語專業學生這樣練寫作(以議論文和說明文為例)
正如個人頁面所顯示的那樣,本人英語專業畢業,獲英語專業八級證書,現從事英語文案工作。在校期間,曾參加過「外研社杯」全國英語寫作大賽(浙江賽區)三等獎。說實話,這樣的成績並不令人驕傲,但過去的學術經歷讓我形成自己關於英語寫作的一些心得和想法,此時此刻將它們整理出來,以大學生英語學習階段較為常見的議論文和說明文為例,總結一些干貨與你們分享。
【第一部分:議論文】
回想當年「外研社杯」全國英語寫作大賽學校海選階段,復賽名單出來之後老師與我們分享了他們當時改作文時的體驗:許多同學的文章沒有一個明確的框架結構,或者結構比較散落,影響了文章的質量。而所有進入復賽的同學,文章結構相對合理清晰,能夠得到改卷老師的認可。可見,一個好的文章結構對於一篇文章來說尤為重要。
說實話,在很少背模板結構或句型的大前提下,我始終恪守著自己的議論文結構。在我看來,這樣的結構趕緊利落,明確清晰,可適用於幾乎所有的議論文,這個結構如下圖。
那麼就以「冰桶挑戰」這個曾經的熱門話題為例吧,之所以想選這個話題是因為不管是當年的寫作比賽復賽試題還是專八考試的作文題,都以這個為背景出現。雖然具體題目有所差異,但本質還是不變的。簡單來說,我們假設題目是Should Ice Bucket Challenge be Advocated?
在作答兩份試題的時候,我均持否定意見,於是我的文章大概結構是這樣的:
Paragraph One:
描述冰桶挑戰的背景。這里需要指出的是往往試題中會有一段文字介紹的就是相關背景,而部分學生往往不樂意自己思考而選擇照搬照抄,這是寫作的大忌。批卷的老師是絕對不會願意給一個缺乏自己思考的學生以高分的。在這種情況下,必須要以自己的語言來進行描述,至少也是對於題目中已給背景作出paraphrase.此過程中需牢記一個原則:簡明扼要。在第一段最後,提出自己的觀點:From my perspective, the action of Ice Bucket Challenge should't be advocated.
Paragraph Two:
第二段開頭需要一句話來進行上下文的過渡,類似於:There are three reasons to support my point of view. / Three reasons will be provided in the following paragraphs to support my opinion.緊接著直截了當放上自己的第一個論據: In the first place, e to the reality that the physical conditions of different people vary, Ice Bucket Challenge can be a threat to some people's health. 接下來舉相關的例子或理由來說明,比如某某某因為進行冰桶挑戰而感冒了指出冰桶挑戰並不值得提倡。
Paragraph Three/ Four:
三四兩段的結構同第二段,只是不再需要過渡的語句可直接提出論據,比如:That some people tend to pay more attention to the stars who take the challenge and therefore ignore the real significance of the challenge is the second reason why I am not in favor of it./ To some extent, Ice Bucket Challenge is a waste of water, which servers as the third reason for my negative attitude towards Ice Bucket Challenge.然後同樣,舉出相關的例子或理由加以證明。
Paragraph Five:
進行對上文的總結,比如:Taking into consideration what has been mentioned above, I firmly hold that it is not wise to advocate Ice Bucket Challenge.總結往往要多於一句話,因此可以再次總結一下上文的內容以不一樣的語言展現出來。但需要注意的是:結尾不應該出現新的話題和內容,因為往往新的內容沒有經過論述或證明,缺乏說服性。
一篇好的文章,定是以豐富的詞彙以及句型表達構成的。詞彙部分,不一定要使用多麼高級的表達,但盡量避免出現初高中生的高頻單詞,比如many,make me sad之類的,試著用新的詞彙去代替那些爛大街的詞。比如用「plenty of」"tons of"代替「many」,比如用「A sense of sorrow came to my mind when...」代替原來想要表達的「...make me sad.」以及還有最最經典的,用「an increasing number of」代替「more and more.」
句型部分,在涉及到議論文的時候,很頻繁地會運用到「我認為...」「我的觀點是...」,可怕的是,部分學生通篇文章下來,到處可見的只有"I think...",最多偶爾加個「I believe...」使得文章顯得索然無味,其實,用以表達觀點的句式並不少,只要稍微變換一下句型即可,比如:I hold the view that…; From my perspective,+內容; As far as I am concerned, +內容; My firm belief locates in that…等等。
此外,既然是formal writing,句式就不宜過於簡單。過於重復的簡單句疊加會讓批卷的老師形成該學生英語水平不高的印象。適當使用從句、分句,簡單句和復雜句交替使用,方能寫成一篇好文章。
在已經具備良好結構和多樣詞彙句型的前提下,清晰的邏輯關系就顯得尤為重要。在我看來,邏輯關系在議論文中主要體現在兩個方面。一是提出的論據和論點的關系,二是論據與加以支持的例子和理由的關系。只有這兩層邏輯關系清晰,論據能充分證明論點,理由和例子能完全支持論據,才能使自己筆下的這篇議論文站住腳。
【第二部分:說明文】
說明文和議論文在許多方面的要求可以通用,尤其是詞彙和句型的多樣表達。邏輯關繫上,對於說明文的要求就在於整篇文章均能充分說明自己想要表達的話題即可。結構方面,我最提倡的說明文的結構還是總-分-總,做到收尾呼應。第一段簡明扼要指出自己想要說明的事物/事情,第二到第四段從不同的方面加以說明,最後一段總結陳詞。
以我當時寫作比賽的說明文為例,題目要求大概是幾位來自國外的同學來你校交換,請從不同方面介紹你的學校,並對他們表示歡迎。在文章的第一段,我就寫明本篇文章的目的,不僅對於他們的到來表示了歡迎,同時指出在本篇文章中會簡要介紹我們學校以便他們能更好地適應這里的生活。第二段到第四段,我分別從學習(課程,老師和同學),生活(宿舍條件,基本設備)以及課外活動三個方面加以論述,最後一段進行總結。最終的成績告訴我,我的文章在一定程度上得到了認可。
英語寫作水平的提高絕非是一朝一夕就能完成的事,需要持之以恆的積累和練習。在這里,想提出五點建議,相信對於寫作水平的提高有所幫助。
英語寫作考察的是formal writing.然而作為native language是中文的我們,很容易就寫成了中式英語。多讀英語原著,熟悉地道的英語表達會對英語寫作有不少幫助。此外,說不定無意中記住的原著中的句子就成了自己英語文章中出彩的加分句,這也會是意外的收獲。
無疑,英語語法的學習是枯燥和乏味的,但不可否認,如果一篇文章語法錯誤連篇,其他部分無論寫的多麼精彩也無法成為一名佳作。所以在平時的時候多翻翻語法書,把其當作是工具書,隨時隨地查漏補缺自己的語法漏洞,掌握正確的句型表達方法。
正如前面提到過的那樣,出彩豐富的詞彙和句型能為自己的文章增光添彩。所以無論是是平時課堂學習,還是做課外延伸閱讀,需要培養自己記錄佳詞佳句的好習慣,然後把它們以合適的方式運用到自己的文章中。
現在大學生階段的作文越來越與社會接軌,比如我在前面提到的「冰桶挑戰」,就是某一個時間段的熱點。盡管文章的要求里基本會涉及某事件的發生背景及主要概況,但是事先對於相關事件的知識儲備無疑會增強我們寫作的信心並提供有力的幫助,這就要求我們在平時保持關注時事熱點的好習慣。
