戰國的時候，趙惠文王有一塊叫做「楚和氏璧」的寶玉，被秦國的昭王知道了，昭王便派了位使臣到趙國來跟惠文王商量：「惠文王，我們秦國願意以十五個城池，和趙國換取這塊「楚和氏璧」的寶玉。」

惠文王一聽：「這該如何是好呀？秦國這么強大，如果把寶玉交給秦昭王，他要是耍賴，不把十五個城池給我們；如果不給，秦昭王會不會一氣之下派兵來打我們，到底該怎麼辦才好？」大家看到惠文王這么煩惱，就有人提議：「我們去請智勇雙全的藺相如來，他一定會想到好辦法的。」

藺相如來了之後，惠文王第一句話就問他：「秦國要用十五個城來交換我的楚和氏璧，你看我應不應該答應他呢？」藺相如毫不遲疑的說：「秦國強，趙國弱，我認為您不答應也不行呀！」「可是，假如秦國拿了我的璧玉，卻不把城池給我，那我該怎麼辦？」惠文王憂心地問。藺相如馬上介面說：「秦國要拿十五個城池來交換趙國的楚和氏璧，假如趙國不答應，那當然是趙國的錯；反過來，若秦國得到了璧玉，卻不把城池給趙國，那錯就在於秦國了。因此，照我的看法，還是派人將璧玉送到秦國去比較好。」

趙惠文王覺得藺相如說的很有道理：「依你看，派什麼人去好呢？」藺相如自告奮勇的說：「假如大王實在找不出合適的人，臣倒願意前往一試。秦國如果守信把城給我們趙國，我就把璧玉留在秦國；如果秦國食言，不把城給趙國，我一定負責將原璧歸還趙國」。

藺相如到了秦國以後，見到了秦昭王，便把璧玉奉上。秦昭王一見到璧玉後，高興地不得了。不斷地把璧玉捧在手上仔細欣賞，又把它傳給左右的侍臣和嬪妃們看，卻都不提起十五個城池交換的事。藺相如一看情形不對，馬上向前對秦王說：「大王，這塊璧玉雖然是稀世珍寶，但仍有些微的瑕玭，請讓我指引給大王看看！」

秦王一聽：「有瑕玭？快指給我看！」藺相如從秦王手中把璧玉接過來以後，馬上向後退了好幾步，背靠著大柱子，瞪著秦王大聲說：「這塊璧玉根本沒有瑕玼，是我看到大王拿了寶玉以後，根本就沒有把十五個城池給趙國的意思。所以我說了個謊話把璧玉騙回來，如果大王要強迫我交出璧玉的話，我就把楚和氏璧和我自己的頭，一起去撞柱子，砸個粉碎。」藺相如說完，就擺出一付要撞牆的樣子。秦昭王害怕藺相如真的會把璧玉撞破，連忙笑著說：「你先別生氣，來人呀！去把地圖拿過來，劃出十五個城市給趙國。現在你可以放心把璧玉給我了吧！」

藺相如知道秦王不安好心，就騙秦王說：「這塊楚和氏璧，是天下人都知道的稀世珍寶，趙王在交給我送到秦國來之前，曾經香湯沐浴，齋戒了五天，所以大王在接取的時候，也同樣應該齋戒五天，然後舉行大禮，以示慎重呀！」。秦王為了得到璧玉，只得按照藺相如所說的去做。藺相如趁著秦王齋戒沐浴的這五天內，叫人將那塊璧玉從小路送回趙國。

五天過去了，秦王果真以很隆重的禮節接待藺相如。藺相如一見秦王便說：「大王，秦國自秦繆公以來，二十多位君王，很少有遵守信約的人，所以我害怕受騙，已差人將璧玉送回趙國！如果大王真的要用城池來交換楚和氏璧，就請先割讓十五個城池給趙國，趙王一當遵守誓約將玉璧奉上。現在，就請大王處置我吧！」 秦昭王一聽璧玉已經被送回趙國，心裡雖然很生氣，卻也佩服藺相如的英勇，不但沒有殺他，還以禮相待，送他回趙國。

澠池會見
公元前282年，秦國派大將白起攻取了趙國的簡（今山西離石縣西）和祁（今山西祁縣）兩塊地方。次年，秦國又派兵攻佔了趙國的石城（今河南朴縣西南）；又過了一年，再向趙國進攻，兩國交戰，趙國損失了兩萬多軍隊，但秦軍的攻勢也被遏止了。

公元前279年（趙惠文王二十年），秦昭王想和趙國講和，以便集中力量攻擊楚國，於是派使者到趙國，約趙王在西河外的澠池（今河南澠池縣境內）見面，互修友好。趙王害怕，想不去，大將軍廉頗和上大夫藺相如商議，認為趙王推辭不去不好，就勸趙王去：「秦王約您會議，如果大王不去，那就顯得趙國力小而膽怯了，還是去好。」趙王聽從了廉、藺二人的建議，藺相如也隨著趙王一起去了。

廉頗帶領大軍把趙王送到邊境，臨分手。對趙王說：「這次大王去澠池，路上來回的行程，加上會見的時間，估計前後不會超過三十天。為了防止意外，要是過了這個日期大王還未回來，請允許我們立太子為王，以斷絕秦國扣留大王要挾趙國的念頭。」趙王同意了。廉頗還在邊境上布置了大量的軍隊，防備秦國的進攻。

負荊請罪

戰國時代，趙惠文王因藺相如辦外交有功，拜藺相如為上卿，官位在廉頗大將之上。廉頗因此心中不快，覺得自己功勞卓著，很不服氣，揚言要當面侮辱藺相如。相如知道後，不願意和廉頗爭位次先後，便處處留意，避讓廉頗，上朝時假稱有病，以便迴避。 有一次，藺相如乘車外出，遠遠望見廉頗的車子迎面而來，急忙叫手下人把車趕到小巷裡避開。相如手下的人便以為相如害怕廉頗，非常氣憤。藺相如對他們解釋說；「秦國這樣強大，我都不怕，廉將軍又有什麼可怕呢？所以我想，強橫的秦國今天之所以不敢對我們趙國輕易用兵，只是因為趙國有我和廉將軍兩人。如果我和廉將軍兩人不能和睦相處，互相攻擊，像老虎一樣相鬥，結果必定有一虎受傷，秦國就會趁機侵略趙國。我所以對廉將軍避讓，是因為我把國家的安危放在前頭，不計較私人的怨恨。」

藺相如這番話，使他手下的人極為感動。相如手下的人也學習藺相如的樣子，對廉頗手下的人處處謙讓。 此事傳到了廉頗的耳中，廉頗為相如如此寬大的胸懷深深感動，更覺得自已十分慚愧。於是脫掉上衣，在背上綁了一根荊杖，請人領到相如家請罪，並沉痛地說；「我是個粗陋淺薄之人，真想不到將軍對我如此寬容。」
