一、廣告英語的語言特色
廣告語言不單是商業語言,而是集文學,美學,語言學,心理學,社會學等學科於一體的鼓動性藝術語言。英語廣告語言大都凝練、生動、詼諧、幽默,富於感染力和感情色彩,具有很強的時代感,有其獨特的詞彙特色,句法特色,以及修辭特色。這些特色體現了英語廣告語言的獨特語言魅力,使廣告英語成為語言藝術魅力與商業推銷的有機結合體。
1、詞彙特色
為了吸引廣告受眾,使廣告更具宣傳效果,廣告英語大量使用帶有明顯褒義色彩的形容詞,富有動感的單音節動詞,以及創造大量的新詞和使用外來詞語等。
英語廣告大量使用褒義形容詞。據語言學家Leech統計,英語廣告中使用頻率較高的形容詞依次為:new,good/better/best,free,fresh,delicious,full,sure,clean,wonderful,special,crisp,fine,big,great,real等。
英語廣告喜使用單音節動詞,讀起來朗朗上口,易於理解。例如,NIKE的廣告詞「Just do it」,Yamaha電子琴廣告「Every time we race, you win每次比賽,你總贏。」三個簡單的單音節動詞「do,race,win」卻清楚地表明了廣告的寓意,達到了宣傳功能,簡單明了而易於記憶。
為了促銷產品,廣告商總是不斷地挖空心思,故意採用錯拼、誤拼等方法創造新詞或借用外來詞,藉以標新立異,吸引顧客。英國一則著名的廣告:「DRINKA PINTA MILKA DAY」,正確的拼寫應是:「Drink a pint of milk a day(每天喝一瓶牛奶)」。這則廣告利用發音把廣告文字巧妙地組合,創意新穎,離奇醒目,使人過目不忘。
2、句法特色
與其它英語文體相比,英語廣告的句子結構要求簡單明了,富於吸引力和想像力,因此,英語廣告中多使用祈使句、省略句、設問句等。
例如,「Make a Global Hit–Konka Electric Appliances.讓世界遍布『康佳』電器!」這句話使用了祈使句,目的不是命令或要求消費者做什麼,而是誠懇地提議,暗含引導,具有勸說和敦促的功能。
英語廣告語言另一個明顯的句法結構特點是省略句的頻繁使用,以達到以有限的篇幅傳達盡可能多的信息內容的目的。如FORD汽車廣告「Ford,safe,quick and with fun,a work of art.」廣告詞省略了謂語,卻更易記憶。

比喻就是使用形象生動的、具體的、眾所周知的形象來指代不生動的、抽象的、不熟悉的事物,從而啟發讀者的想像力,使廣告清新自然、深刻有趣,易於被消費者接受。保險公司State Farm Insurance的廣告語「Like a good neighbor,State Farm is there.」把State Farm Insurance比作一個好鄰居,讓西方人想起聖經中的一句話「Love thy neighbor as thyself」,以此引起消費者對公司的好感.
在廣告中擬人就是把事物或商品人格化,賦予商品人的生命及思維,從而加強了商品的特性,使廣告倍加生動,富有感染力。如「Flowers by Interflora speak from the heart」,這是Interflora花店的一則廣告,它採用擬人手法,賦予鮮花以生命,突出鮮花代表的甜蜜和溫馨,讓人產生購買的慾望。
誇張就是用誇大的詞句來形容事物。廣告英語常使用誇張,故意言過其實地渲染所推銷的商品,但又在情理之中,使廣告的形象更加突出,給人以深刻印象。如一則食品廣告「We have hidden a garden full of vegetables where you』d never expect in a pie.在您意想不到的一個地方,我們珍藏了滿園的蔬菜,那就是在一個小小的餡餅里。」廣告用誇張的手法寫出了餡餅里的蔬菜品種豐富以及味道鮮美,達到了其宣傳和誘導購買的功效。
雙關是一種文字游戲,它利用語言文字的同音異義、和一詞多義的特點,表達一明一暗兩層意思。在廣告英語中,雙關使廣告語言文字精煉生動,風趣幽默,收到了言有盡而意無窮的藝術效果。如在倫敦某機場,一家免稅店前的廣告「Have a nice trip.Buy--buy!」廣告利用「buy」與「bye」同音異義的特點,把招呼語「bye」換成了勸服購買的單詞「buy」,以提醒遊客在離開前買些免稅產品回家。語言詼諧幽默,而又讓人心領神會。
二、廣告英語的語用翻譯
1、語用翻譯的概念
語用學是研究語言使用與理解的學問,既研究發話人利用語言和外部語境表達意義的過程,也研究聽話人對發話人說出的話語的解碼和推理過程,即語用學研究的是交際者在特定交際情景中傳達和理解的意義以及理解和傳達的過程。翻譯研究則是探討譯者解讀原文、在譯文中重構原文意義的學問。兩者有著共同的研究對象,即語言理解和語言表達,故可以借鑒語用學理論來探討翻譯活動,即語用翻譯觀。
語用翻譯是指從語用學的角度探討翻譯實踐問題,即運用語用學理論去解決翻譯操作中涉及到的理解問題和重構問題、語用和文化因素在譯文中的處理方法以及原作的語用意義的傳達及其在譯作中的得失等問題。語用學的翻譯觀可以說是一種等效翻譯理論,它更多地探討口頭語言、修辭性和藝術性語言的翻譯。從上文分析看,英語廣告的語言多為簡潔易懂的口頭語言,修辭性較強,具有很濃的藝術色彩,故廣告英語的翻譯宜從語用翻譯的角度,採取適當的翻譯策略和技巧,以達到廣告語言的語用功效。
2、廣告英語的語用翻譯方法
廣告語言的翻譯不僅僅是一種語碼轉換,更是一種文化交流和功能對等的實現,因此翻譯時應盡可能實現譯文廣告語與原文廣告語的效果等值,採取適宜的翻譯方法和技巧,如採用音譯法、意譯法、音意結合法、以及創造性翻譯等。
(1)音譯法
音譯法即利用英文商標發音,用與其相同、相似或相近的漢語字詞來翻譯。一般用於在漢語中無對應物和對應詞的商標的翻譯上。它的優點是可以保持原商標名的音韻之美,體現商品的異國情調,如Coca Cola(可口可樂)、Cannon(佳能)等。
(2)意譯法
由於英漢兩種語言和文化的巨大差異,譯文不能局限於字面意思,而應根據實際語境,選擇適當的詞語外延意義,同時考慮漢語的表達習慣,以及目標受眾的承受心理和習慣,進行語用翻譯。如,She wants to put her tongue in your mouth.這則香港語言學習中心的廣告就不可據守原文直譯為「她要把她的舌頭放進你的嘴裡」。此廣告妙用了tongue一詞多義雙關,tongue既可指「舌頭」又可指「語言」,可譯為:「她要把她的語言教給你」。
(3)音意結合
這是廣告翻譯中最為常用的一種方法,它在注意字音的同時,更注重了該商品內涵和文化信息的傳遞,使該國特有的文化特色得到展示。因為有時音譯和意譯都不能達到理想的效果。音譯系純語音翻譯,不考慮詞義問題,可能難以達到原詞的含義;而意譯則依據原文詞義翻譯,不考慮語音問題,又可能使原語詞的形象失真。所以採用音意結合方法,使譯文在語音上與原文相近,又能創造出一種能體現原文特點但又非原文詞義的詞義。如「Pentium」,這是美國微軟公司生產的計算機主機的著名品牌,把它譯成「奔騰」,使人一看就能感覺得到它的優良性能和快速的運算速度。
(4)創造譯法
由於英漢一些詞彙的文化聯想意義不同,以及中西方民族的價值取向、審美心理等存在差異,有時如果完全音譯或直譯,會引起消費者曲解、誤解,從而導致商品形象銷售的失敗。這時,宜採用創造性法翻譯方法,既可以使譯語突出產品的特徵,譯出異域文化,又能促使顧客對其產生良好的印象,激發他們的購買慾望。如:「Rejoice(高興)」——「飄柔」,「Head and Shoulders(頭和肩)」——「海飛絲」等均沒有機械地追求原詞語的規約意義,而是尋求一種語用上的對等,力圖使譯語消費者獲得與原語消費者相同或近似的感受。
