There was a young flower in the desert where all was dry and sad looking…… It was growing by itself…… enjoying every day…… and saying to the sun "When shall I be grown up?" And the sun would say "Be patient - Each time I touch you, you grow a little……" She was so pleased. Because she would have a chance to bring beauty to this corner of sand…… And this is all she wanted to do - bring a little bit of beauty to this world. One day the hunter came by - and stepped on her. - She was going to die - and she felt so sad. Not because she was dying - but because she would not have a chance to bring a little bit of beauty to this corner of the desert. The great spirit saw her, and was listening. - Indeed, he said…… She should be living…… And he reached down and touched her - and gave her life. And she grew up to be a beautiful flower…… and this corner of the desert became so beautiful because of her.

Translated by George Fyler Townsend

The Wolf and the Lamb

WOLF, meeting with a Lamb astray from the fold, resolved not to

lay violent hands on him, but to find some plea to justify to the

Lamb the Wolf's right to eat him. He thus addressed him:"Sirrah,

last year you grossly insulted me." "Indeed," bleated the Lamb in a

mournful tone of voice, "I was not then born." Then said the Wolf

, "You feed in my pasture." "No, good sir," replied the Lamb, "I

have not yet tasted grass." Again said the Wolf, "You drink of my

well." "No," exclaimed the Lamb, "I never yet drank water, for as

yet my mother's milk is both food and drink to me." Upon which

the Wolf seized him and ate him up, saying, "Well! I won't remain

supperless, even though you refute every one of my imputations."

The tyrant will always find a pretext for his tyranny.

The Bat and the Weasels

A BAT who fell upon the ground and was caught by a Weasel

pleaded to be spared his life. The Weasel refused, saying that he

was by nature the enemy of all birds. The Bat assured him that he

was not a bird, but a mouse, and thus was set free. Shortly

afterwards the Bat again fell to the ground and was caught by

another Weasel, whom he likewise entreated not to eat him. The

Weasel said that he had a special hostility to mice. The Bat assured

him that he was not a mouse, but a bat, and thus a second time

escaped.

It is wise to turn circumstances to good account.

The Ass and the Grasshopper

AN ASS having heard some Grasshoppers chirping, was highly

enchanted; and, desiring to possess the same charms of melody,

demanded what sort of food they lived on to give them such

beautiful voices. They replied, "The dew." The Ass resolved that

he would live only upon dew, and in a short time died of hunger.

The Lion and the Mouse A LION was awakened from sleep by a

Mouse running over his face.

Rising up angrily, he caught him and was about to kill him, when

the Mouse piteously entreated, saying: "If you would only spare

my life, I would be sure to repay your kindness." The Lionlaughed

and let him go. It happened shortly after this that theLion was

caught by some hunters, who bound him by st ropes to the round.

The Mouse, recognizing his roar, came gnawed the rope with his

teeth, and set him free, exclaim "You ridiculed the idea ofmy ever

being able to help you, expecting to receive from me any repay

ment of your favor; I nowyou know that it is possible for even a

Mouse to con benefits on a Lion."

A Mistake

An American, a Scot and a Canadian were killed in a car accident. They arrived at the gates of heaven, where a flustered St. Peter explained that there had been a mistake. "Give me $500 each," he said, "and I'll return you to earth as if the whole thing never happened."

"Done!" said the American. Instantly, he found himself standing unhurt near the scene.

"Where are the others?" asked a medic.

"Last I knew," said the American, "the Scot was haggling price, and the Canadian was arguing that his government should pay."

「I'm sorry ,Madam ,but I shall have to charge you twenty dollars for pulling your boy's tooth .」

「Twenty d ollars! Why ,I understand you to say that you charged only four dollars for such work!」

「Yes ,but this youngster yelled so terribly that he scared four other patients out of the office .」

Five Hundred Times

In the traffic court of a large mid-western city, a young lady was brought before the judge to answer a ticket given her for driving through a red light. She explained to his honor that she was a school teacher and requested an immediate disposal of her case in order that she might hasten on to her classes. A wild gleam came into the judge's eye. "You are a school teacher, eh?" said he. "Madam, I shall realize my lifelong ambition. Sit down at that table and write 'I went through a red light' five hundred times."

I'm Trying to Stop It

"Boy, why have you got cotton-wool in your ear? Is it infected?"

"No, sir, but you said yesterday that everything you told me went in one ear and out the other , so I am trying to stop it."

A daughter complained to her father about her life and how things were so hard for her ,She did not know she was going to make it and want to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling .It seemed as one problem was solved a new one arose.
Her father, a cook ,took her to the kitchen ,He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire .Soon the pots came to a boil. In one he placed carrots, in the second he placed eggs, and in the last he placed ground coffee beans. He led them sit and boil, without saying a word.
The daughter sucked her teeth and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. In about twenty minutes he turned off the burners, He fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them a bowl. Then he ladled the coffee out and placed it in a mug. Turning to her he asked," Darling, what do you see?"
"Carrots, eggs, and coffee." she replied.
He brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots, She did and noted that they were soft .He then asked her to take an egg and break it ,After pulling off the shell ,she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee .She smiled ,as she tasted its rich aroma.
"What does it mean ,Father?" she humbly asked.
He explained that each of them had faced the same adversity, boiling wate ,but each reacted differently, The carrot went in strong, hard ,and unrelenting ,But after being subjected to the boiling water ,it softened and weak. The egg had being fragile, Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior. But after sitting through the boiling water ,its inside became hardened ,The ground coffee beans were unique ,however ,After they were in the boiling water ,they had changed the water .
"Which are you?" he asked his daughter.
When adversity knocks on your door ,how do you respond? Are you a carrot ,an egg ,or a coffee bean?

there were two high mountains between Jizhou in the south and Heyang in the north. One was called Taihang Mountain and the other Wangwu Mountain. Both of the mountains were very high.

Just to the north of the mountains lived an old man called Yu Gong who was nearly 90 years old. With the two high mountains just in front of his house, his family and he had to walk a long way around the mountains whenever they had something to do on the other side of the mountains.

One day, Yu Gong called all his family together to talk about how to move the two mountains to other places. His wife said, "An old man like you cannot even move a small hill, not to mention the two high mountains. Even if you can, where can you throw so much earth and stone?"

"the Bohai Sea is big enough to contain all the earth and stone," Yu Gong said.
So it was decided. His children started to dig the mountains, led by the old man Yu Gong.

A man named Zhi Sou saw them working and tried to stop them, saying, "You are so silly! You're so old and weak that you can't even take away the grass and trees. How can you move the high mountains?"

"You're wrong," Yu Gong said with a sigh. "Look, my sons can continue my work after my death. When my sons die, my grandchildren will continue. So generations after generations, there's no end. But the mountains can't grow higher. Do you still say I can』t move them away?"

Later the Heaven God, upon learning of Yu Gong』s story, was GREatly moved. He then ordered another god to come down and take the two high mountains away.

the story tells us that so long as one is determined and sticks to it long enough, anything can be done, no matter how difficult it is.
