上面兩則有趣的謎語中，謎面的構成方法十分類似，都是採用了描寫其特徵的方法，英語中這種謎語被稱為事物謎，也叫做描述性謎語(descriptive riddles)。事物謎的謎面通常是用比喻、暗示或其他方法來描繪所猜謎底的特徵，和漢語中物謎的謎面構成及猜測方法基本相同。舉例說明一下：

And tortured with scalding water,

謎底是「Coffee」。這個謎語用第一人稱自述的手法道出謎面，最後一句則是點睛之筆，使人一下就猜出謎底是某種飲料。
另外一種人們經常見到的英文謎語是字謎(charades)，字謎經常在字母、音節或是整個詞的離合上做文章。字謎的謎面通常是前面幾句描述謎底單詞的某個或某些字母在哪些單詞中出現或是不出現，最後一句點出詞義，或是為猜謎提供一些暗示和猜測的方向，有點像中文裡的謎目。猜英文字謎的關鍵是不要被謎面的含義或是寓意所迷惑，否則的話，很可能誤入它途，不得要領。例如：
1) The beginning of eternity,
The end of time and space.
The beginning of every end,
And the end of every place.
將句中提到的單詞「eternity, time, space, end, place」按照字面意思進行拆分，即可得到謎底：「The letter E」。
2)What starts with T，ends with T and full of T？謎底是「A teapot」。teapot(茶壺)一詞以字母T開頭和結尾，而茶壺里裝的自然是茶(tea)，所以是full of T。
3)The longest word in the world.謎底是「smiles」。這個單詞的首字母和尾字母之間是單詞「mile」(英里)，可以理解為首尾間有一英里長，自然就是世界上最長的單詞了。猜這個字謎時，千萬不要去翻詞典去找一個字母最多的單詞。
英文謎語中一個重要的類型是智力謎語，主要涉及一些機智與詼諧的問題(shrewd and witty questions)，謎底通常是語義雙關，和漢語中腦筋急轉彎的問題極為類似，在英語中被稱作「conundrums」。在莎士比亞悲劇《哈姆雷特》第五幕第一場中，兩個專門為死人挖墓穴的工人出了一則智力謎語：What is he that builds stronger than either the mason，the shipwright or the carpenter？意思是誰造出來的東西比泥水匠、船匠或是木匠造的更堅固？謎底是：The gallows-maker，for that frame outlives a thousand tenants.因為絞架比任何一個被弔死其上的死刑犯都存在得長久，所以謎底是「造絞架的人」。莎士比亞用這則謎語告訴人們今日的輝煌遲早會成為過去。
猜智力謎語很有意思，也很有挑戰性。破解智力謎語首先要有對語言的悟性及靈活運用的能力，其次是豐富的語言知識，二者缺一不可。
英文中，有些智力謎語貌似嚴肅，煞有介事，謎底卻是稀鬆平常，讓人哭笑不得，大呼上當。例如：
1) What is the difference between a presidential candidate and an overworked secretary?
謎底是「One can't wait to get into office and the other can't wait to get out of the office.」總統候選人(presidential candidate)迫不及待地要上任(get into office)，而工作過度勞累的秘書則期待著下班(get out of the office)回家休息。
2)What is the cheapest way to see the world？
謎底是「Buy an atlas」。買一張地圖(buy an atlas)就可以見到整個世界(see the world)了。而其實see the world作為一個固定片語時的意思是「見多識廣」。
有些貌似簡單，謎底卻耐人尋味。如：
What goes up and never goes down？謎底是「Age」。年齡是永遠向上增長，不可能下降的。
還有一些則語出驚人，出人意料，細細品味倒也幽默風趣，讓人啞然失笑。
例如：
Why should you never marry a tennis player？
謎底是「Because love means nothing to them」。love的通用義是「愛情」，在網球比賽中則表示「零分」。
英文智力謎語中有一類比較難猜，這類謎語是通過篡改英語諺語、成語或名句而形成的，要猜出這些謎語就必須對這些諺語、成語了如指掌，否則，就是絞盡腦汁也未必能猜中。略舉例說明一下：
