1、當句子使用的是一般過去時的時候，謂語動詞用一般過去式。例如：I was a student two years ago .兩年前我是一個學生。（這是過去了的事情，於是謂語動詞be要變成過去式was）；而若是句子使用的是現在完成時或是過去完成時，動詞使用過去分詞。例如：I have been to the Great Wall once .我去過一次長城。（現在完成時，於是將be 變為have been ）
2、若是句子使用的是一般現在時，且主語是第一人稱I 、we 、或是第二人稱單復數you、第三人稱復數they等等，謂語動詞都用原形。例如：They play football well 。 另外，動詞的ing形式或是不定式to do結構都不可以獨立做謂語，一般在句子中作其他成分。例如：I have a lot things to do 。在這里to do 是做補充說明的。
3、This is where your grandfather was born 。這句話里be born 是一個固定搭配，表示「出生」，而出生是以前出生的，所以用一般過去時，將be變為was 。this is 中的is 是「是」的意思！
