China, Japan youths encouraged to pursue China-Japan friendship

Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday hosted a banquet in the Great Hall of the People for a Japanese delegation, urging young people from China and Japan to enrich their friendship.

"Younger generations are the future of a lasting friendship between China and Japan. They should promote bilateral ties, learn from each other, talk to each other and trust each other so that friendship and positive actions flower," Hu said.

"I believe the future of China and Japan will be positive and the torch of friendship will be handed down from one generation to the next," Hu said.

The 200-odd member delegation is composed of representatives and the children of participants who attended a grand gathering in 1984, as well as several Japanese dietmen and staff from friendship organizations.

In the fall of 1984, 3,000 Japanese young people visited China at the invitation of Hu Yaobang, then general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

They got together with about 1 million Chinese youth from all walks of life, and celebrated the 12th anniversary of the normalization of China-Japan relations.

Luo Gan said China is putting anti-terrorism at the top of its agenda to ensure national and social public security.

Luo said that success in fighting terrorism is very important for the Communist Party and its government in winning public support. He says an anti-terrorism mechanism should be set up quickly to enhance emergency response and coordination.

Luo also highlighted the importance of international cooperation.

Meanwhile, in Beijing, China has held a state-level anti-terrorist exercise for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The exercise, bbed "Great Wall No. 4", focuses on security work for the Beijing Olympics.

Rage, unrest reign in Ferguson

WASHINGTON, Nov. 29-- Rage and unrest have once again taken over in the past week in Ferguson, a previously little-known northern suburb of St. Louis, Missouri, in the wake of a grand jury decision not to indict a white police officer in the fatal shooting of a black teenager in August.
More than a dozen buildings along the West Florissant Avenue, a few blocks from where Brown was shot, were set ablaze and police cars were vandalized on Monday night following the announcement of the grand jury's decision.
On South Florissant Road, a main commercial strip in Ferguson, shops were looted with smashed windows.
Local residents and business owners were nervous and uncertain about the future in the once peaceful town of about 21,000 people.

China to launch "Shenzhou 7" satellite

Chinanews, Shanghai– The "Shenzhou 7" might carry three astronauts aboard and it will possibly be launched in September this year. By then, astronauts will conct a space walk, probably with a belt, said Pang Zhihao, a research fellow at the China Academy of Space Technology, the Oriental Morning Post reported.

「The launch can be described in two words 『thrilling』 and 『exciting』. Chinese public can see every detail of the launching process with televised live broadcast,」 Pang said.

「This will be the first time for Chinese astronauts to conct a space walk. So it will be a very exciting event,」 he said.

Normally, astronauts can conct a space walk with or without a belt. If they tie a belt, the trip will be safer for them and they can get more oxygen and communicate with researchers on earth with the belt, Pang noted.

「As this will be the first time for Chinese astronauts to conct a space walk, they will probably tie a belt in carrying out the mission,」 Pang added.

Britain Enters Final Day of Campaigning Before Elections
Britain's top party leaders are taking full advantage of their last day of campaigning before Britons go to the polls.

Late Wednesday night, Labor leader Gordon Brown visited steel workers on an overnight shift.

"I don't need to tell you that this election is about the future," said Brown. "It's about the future of our instry, the future of our jobs, the future of our young people."

Mr. Brown is facing a tight election. The Conservative Party, led by David Cameron, has topped the latest opinion polls. And, the Liberal Democrats -- traditionally a marginalized party in what has largely been a two-party system -- are scoring high in opinion polls.

Rodney Barker is a political academic and professor at the London School of Economics.

"The three candidates have been up to making themselves as busy as possible," explained Barker. "David Cameron, the Conservative leader, so visible that he's even worked through the night -- he hasn't slept."

Barker says this last day of campaigning is crucial, because so many Britons still have not made up their mind.

A survey published by the research group ComRes Tuesday said 2.5 million people who say they are certain to vote say they are still undecided who to vote for and more than a third of voters said it was "quite possible" they would change their mind on who to vote for by the time the polls open Thursday morning.

Rodney Barker says it is all up in the air.

"The one thing which one can say about this election -- and we haven't been able to say this for any election within living memory -- is that the only certain thing is that we cannot predict the outcome, even on the day before the poll," added Barker.

The ComRes poll shows the Conservatives winning 37 percent of votes, Labor on 29 percent and the Liberal Democrats on 26 percent.

With the votes split this way, no single party would win a majority of seats in parliament. In that case, the shape of Britain's future government will depend on coalitions.

The balance is likely to be tipped by the Liberal Democrats, but so far their leader, Nick Clegg, has refused to say whether his party would side with the Conservatives or Labor.

Barker says what this means is that it could be weeks before the composition of Britain's future government becomes clear.

"Even when we know the result of the election, we may not know what the result is in terms of government -- who will successfully make a deal with who to make what sort of government," noted Barker.

If no single party is able to win a majority of parliament seats, current Prime Minister Gordon Brown would have the right to stay in office until a new government can be formed.

This is BBC world news.

Georgia says it has agreed to buy eight hundred million cubic meters of gas from Turkey next year almost half of its needs. The price has not been disclosed, but the announcement follows Georgia agreeing last week to buy slightly larger amount from the Russian state-controlled Gazprom at double its previous price.

The Iranian parliament has described the United Nation Security Council decision to impose sanctions on Iran because of its nuclear programme as unjust and illegal. The big majority of Iranian deputies have approved a bill, instructing the government to review cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The former Chilean military ruler General Augusto Pinochet who died earlier this month has left a posthumous letter. The letter was published by a group of his supporters who said it had been received in 2004. Simon Watts reports.

General Pinochet saw himself as a warrior hero, but he was pursued to the last by investigations into alleged human rights abuses. Trying to salvage his reputation from beyond the grave, the general says he was proud of stopping a Marxist dictatorship. Referring to the estimated three thousand deaths ring his rule, he says tough measures were needed but he was more flexible than generally realized. The letter reveals how unappreciated General Pinochet felt in his final days. He says there was a kind of banishment and unimagined loneliness.

A contact of a former Russian agent who died in British after contracting radiation poisoning has been arrested in Naples. The man Mario Scaramella met the Russian Alexander Litvenenko on the day he became ill. Mr. Scaramella who has also been affected by radiation was arrested on his return from London. The BBC correspondent in Italy says the arrest is connected with the long-running investigation into arms trafficking and is not related to the death of Mr. Litvenenko.
