“Confucius”这个词最初并不是英文，而是拉丁文。作为当时天主教圣职人员的利玛窦等耶稣会传教士，在翻译中国经典和中国人名、地名并向他们的欧洲同胞进行介绍的时候，使用的自然也就是“教会拉丁语”，孔子的翻译就来自于这种语言，并被沿用至今。
