英语中外科的单词：SURGERY，意思就是“手的技术”。说明了外科的一个重要特点就是动手操作。当然现代医学发展到今天，内科与外科之间的界限已经越来越模糊了，其中出现了许多的交叉。目前是这样划分的，凡是需要外科手术解决的疾病划归外科学的范畴，凡是不需要外科手术来治疗的疾病归到内科。当然这其中也有许多疾病在不同的时期需要不同的科室会诊，比如说冠心病，有的人服药可解决问题，有的人需要做介入治疗，有的则需要外科手术。因此这就需要科室之间的协作，和互相的了解和学习。这里提到一个介入治疗，其实就是介于内科、外科和放射科之间的一个交叉学科。目前有的医学有专门的介入科，有的则归到放射科的一个分组，有的部分则归到内科，比如心脏介入归内科，有的则归到外科，比如神经介入治疗。这种划分没有一个明确的规定，而是根据不同国家不同地区不同医院的习惯渐渐形成的。
说了半天大家可能越来越不明白了。这儿给出一个目前国内医院常用的内外科的分科情况。内科一般分为：心内科、神经内科、呼吸内科、消化内科、肾内科、内分泌科、风湿病科；外科分为：心胸外科（也有的医院将之分为胸外科和心外科两上专科）、神经外科、普通外科（包括腹部外科、乳腺外科、甲状腺外科等、血管外科）、泌尿外科、骨科、烧伤和整形外科、小儿外科（也属于儿科的范畴）。
从本质上讲，内科和外科虽然都属于医学的范畴，即使二者有如此多的共同之处共通之处，但二者的工作性质以及内外科医生的思维方式都是大相径庭的。内科学作为一门系统的学科，虽然的有其实践性，但是它具有一整套完整的理论体系。它把人体当作一个独立的系统来进行研究。而外科由于存在人为的因素的介入，更多的时候要把人体当作一个开放的系统来思考。如果把内科医生称为“家”的话，那么外科医生就是“匠”。但是如果一个内科医生只是关门做学问，而不去进行临床实践，他就永远也成不了真正意义上的“医家”；同样如果一个外科医生，只去钻研如何把手术做的漂亮完美，而忽略了理论的学习和归纳总结，他永远也不会成为一个“巧匠”。也许是工作性质的不同，内外医生的外在气质也有一定的差别，外科工作对医生的要求是雷厉风行，胆大心细，果断干脆，遇事沉着冷静、有条不紊。内科工作要求医生思维缜密，知识渊博，细致入微。医学院毕业的女同学一般向往干内科工作，因为内科工作需要更多的耐心和细致。男同学都向往做外科工作，因为外科工作更有挑战性，更有成就感，更有吸引力。外科工作是这样的，有了手术，大家都想去做，既使手术过程很累，还要担风险。但是在排手术的时候大家都希望更可能多地上台。我想可能世界上没有几种职业象外科这样的，把工作当作快乐和荣誉来看待。也许这正是这种工作性质吸引着许多有志男儿不计报酬和辛劳投入这项事业，工作着，痛着，并快乐着。
