A. 科技英語翻譯技巧
科技英語翻譯技巧之淺見
科技文體崇尚嚴謹周密，概念准確，邏輯性強，行文簡練，重點突出，句式嚴整，少有變化，常用前置性陳述，即在句中將主要信息盡量前置，通過主語傳遞主要信息。科技文章文體的特點是：清晰、准確、精練、嚴密。那末，科技文章的語言結構特色在翻譯過程中如何處理，這是進行英漢科技翻譯時需要探討的問題。現分述如下：
一、大量使用名詞化結構
《當代英語語法》（A Grammar of Contemporary）在論述科技英語時提出，大量使用名詞化結構（Nominalization）是科技英語的特點之一。因為科技文體要求行文簡潔、表達客觀、內容確切、信息量大、強調存在的事實。而非某一行為。
Archimedes first discovered the principle of displacement of water by solid bodies.
阿基米德最先發展固體潘�腦�懟?lt;BR>句中of displacement of water by solid bodies 系名詞化結構，一方面簡化了同位語從句，另一方強調displacement 這一事實。
The rotation of the earth on its own axis causes the change from day to night.
地球繞軸自轉，引起晝夜的變化。
名詞化結構the rotation of the earth on its own axis 使復合句簡化成簡單句，而且使表達的概念更加確切嚴密。
If you use firebricks round the walls of the boiler, the heat loss, can be considerably reced.
爐壁採用耐火磚可大大降低熱耗。
科技英語所表述的是客觀規律，因之要盡量避免使用第一、二人稱；此外，要使主要的信息置於句首。
Television is the transmission and reception of images of moving objects by radio waves.
電視通過無線電波發射和接受活動物體的圖象。
名詞化結構the transmission and reception of images of moving objects by radio waves 強調客觀事實，而"謂語動詞則著重其發射和接受的能力。
二、廣泛使用被動語句
根據英國利茲大學John Swales 的統計，科技英語中的謂語至少三分之一是被動態。這是因為科技文章側重敘事推理，強調客觀准確。第一、二人稱使用過多，會造成主觀臆斷的印象。因此盡量使用第三人稱敘述，採用被動語態，例如：Attention must be paid to the working temperature of the machine.應當注意機器的工作溫度。而很少說：You must pay attention to the working temperature of the machine .你們必須注意機器的工作溫度。此外，如前所述，科技文章將主要信息前置，放在主語部份。這也是廣泛使用被動態的主要原因。試觀察並比較下列兩段短文的主語。
We can store electrical energy in two metal plates separated by an insulating medium. We call such a device a capacitor, or a condenser, and its ability to store electrical energy capacitance .It is measured in farads.
電能可儲存在由一絕緣介質隔開的兩塊金屬極板內。這樣的裝置稱之為電容器，其儲存電能的能力稱為電容。電容的測量單位是法拉。
這一段短文中各句的主語分別為：
Electrical energy
Such a device
Its ability to store electrical energy
It (Capacitance )
它們都包含了較多的信息，並且處於句首的位置，非常醒目。四個主語完全不同，避免了單調重復，前後連貫，自然流暢。足見被動結構可收簡潔客觀之效。
三、非限定動詞。
如前所述，科技文章要求行文簡練，結構緊湊，為此，往往使用分詞短語代替定語從句或狀語從句；使用分詞獨立結構代替狀語從句或並列分句；使用不定式短語代替各種從句；介詞十動名詞短語代替定語從句或狀語從句。這樣可縮短句子，又比較醒目。試比較下列各組句子。
A direct current is a current flowing always in the same direction.
直流電是一種總是沿同一方向流動的電流。
Radiating from the earth, heat causes air currents to rise.
熱量由地球輻射出來時，使得氣流上升。
A body can more uniformly and in a straight line,there being no cause to change that motion.
如果沒有改變物體運動的原因，那麼物體將作勻速直線運動。
Vibrating objects proce sound waves ,each vibration procing one sound wave.
振動著的物體產生聲波，每一次振動產生一個聲波。
In communications, the problem of electronics is how to convey information from one place to another.
在通訊系統中，電子學要解決的問題是如何把信息從一個地方傳遞到另一個地方。
Materials to be used for structural purposes are chosen so as to behave elastically in the environmental conditions.
結構材料的選擇應使其在外界條件中保持其彈性。
There are different ways of changing energy from one form into another.
將能量從一種形式轉變成另一種形式有各種不同的方法。
In making the radio waves correspond to each sound in turn, messages are carried from a broadcasting station to a receiving set.
使無線電波依次對每一個聲音作出相應變化時，信息就由廣播電台傳遞到接收機。
四、後置定語
大量使用後置定語也是科技文章的特點之一。常見的結構不以下五種：
1、介詞短語
The forces e to friction are called frictional forces.
由於摩擦而產生的力稱之為摩擦力。
A call for paper is now being issued .
徵集論文的通知現正陸續發出。
2、形容詞及形容詞短語。
In this factory the only fuel available is coal.
該廠唯一可用的燃料是煤。
In radiation, thermal energy is transformed into radiant energy ,similar in nature to light.
熱能在輻射時，轉換成性質與光相似的輻射能。
3、副詞
The air outside pressed the side in .
外面的空氣將桶壁壓得凹進去了。
The force upward equals the force downward so that the balloon stays at the level.
向上的力與向下的力相等，所以氣球就保持在這一高度。
4、單個分詞，但仍保持校強的動詞意義。
The results obtained must be cheeked .
獲得的結果必須加以校核
The heat proced is equal to the electrical energy wasted.
產生的熱量等於浪費了的電能。
5、定語從句
During construction, problems often arise which require design changes.
在施工過程中，常會出現需要改變設計的問題。
The molecules exert forces upon each other, which depend upon the distance between them.
分子相互間都存在著力的作用，該力的大小取決於它們之間的距離。
Very wonderful changes in matter take place before our eyes every day to which we pay little attention.
(定語從句to which we pay little attention 修飾的是changes,這是一種分隔定語從句。)
我們幾乎沒有注意的很奇異的物質變化每天都在眼前發生。
To make an atomic bomb we have to use uranium 235, in which all the atoms are available for fission.
製造原子彈，我們必須用鈾235，因為軸的所有原子都會裂變。
五、常用句型
科技文章中經常使用若干特定的句型，從而形成科技文體區別於其他文體的標志。例如It---that---結構句型；被動態結構句型；結構句型，分詞短語結構句型，省略句結構句型等。舉例如下：
It is evident that a well lubricated bearing turns more easily than a dry one.
顯然，潤滑好的軸承，比不潤滑的軸承容易轉動。
It seems that these two branches of science are mutually dependent and interacting.
看來這兩個科學分支是相互依存，相互作用的。
It has been proved that inced voltage causes a current to flow in opposition to the force procing it.
已經證明，感應電壓使電流的方向與產生電流的磁場力方向相反。
It was not until the 19th century that heat was considered as a form of energy.
直到十九世紀人們才認識到熱是能量的一種形式。
Computers may be classified as analog and digital.
計算機可分為模擬計算機和數字計算機兩種。
The switching time of the new-type transistor is shortened three times.
新型晶體管的開關時間縮短了三分之二。（或---縮短為三分之一。）
This steel alloy is believed to be the best available here .
人們認為這種合金鋼是這里能提供的最好的合金鋼。
Electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed as light.
電磁波傳送的速度和光速相同。
Microcomputers are very small in size ,as is shown in Fig.5.
如圖5所示，微型計算機體積很小。
In water sound travels nearly five times as fast as in air.
聲音在水中的傳播速度幾乎是在空氣中傳播速度的五倍。
Compared with hydrogen, oxygen is nearly 16 times as heavy.

六、長句
為了表述一個復雜概念，使之邏輯嚴密，結構緊湊，科技文章中往往出現許多長句。有的長句多達七八個詞，以下即是一例。
The efforts that have been made to explain optical phenomena by means of the hypothesis of a medium having the same physical character as an elastic solid body led, in the first instance, to the understanding of a concrete example of a medium which can transmit transverse vibrations, and at a later stage to the definite conclusion that there is no luminiferous medium having the physical character assumed in the hypothesis.
為了解釋光學現象，人們曾試圖假定有一種具有與彈性固體相同的物理性質的介質。這種子嘗試的結果，最初曾使人們了解到一種能傳輸橫向振動的具有上述假定所以認為的那種物理性質的發光介質。
七、復合詞與縮略詞
大量使用復合詞與縮略詞是科技文章的特點之一，復合詞從過去的雙片語合發展到多片語合；縮略詞趨向於任意構詞，例如某一篇論文的作者可以就僅在該文中使用的術語組成縮略詞，這給翻譯工作帶來一定的困難。例如：
full-enclosed 全封閉的（雙詞合成形容詞）
feed-back反饋（雙詞合成名詞）
work-harden 加工硬化（雙詞合成詞）
criss-cross交*著（雙詞合成副詞）
on-and-off-the-road路面越野兩用的（多詞合成形容詞）
anti-armoured-fighting-vehicle-missile反裝甲車導彈（多詞合成名詞）
radiophotography無線電傳真（無連字元復合詞）
colorimeter色度計（無連字元復合詞）
maths (mathematics)數學（裁減式縮略詞）
lab (laboratory)實驗室
ft (foot/feet)英尺
cpd (compound)化合物
FM(frequency molation)調頻（用首字母組成的縮略詞）
P.S.I. (pounds per square inch)磅/英寸
SCR(silicon controlled rectifier )可控硅整流器
TELESAT(telecommunications satellite )通信衛星（混成法構成的縮略詞）
根據上述的科技文章的物占，在翻譯過程中就要注意各種不同的翻譯技巧與方法。例如被動態的譯法、長句的處理方法、倍數的譯法等等。
一、 首先要擁有一本好的科技詞典
學習普通英語幾年以後，你大約掌握幾千個單詞的詞彙量，這時你就會發現英語擁有極其豐富多彩的詞彙，但在科技文章中，又會對大量的專業詞彙和術語而頭疼。有些詞晦澀難懂，大而長，看起來嚇人，如posttention（後張拉力），prefabricate（預制），意義比較簡單，只要查一下詞典就行。有些詞在文章中起著舉足輕重的作用。光憑上下文含義猜測其中的含義是行不通的。另外有許多詞比如negotiate這比較常見的是「談判」的意思，但是當它出現在「negotiate a bad turn」這個片語中，譯成「談判」就不合適，查查詞典就知道是「順利通過」的意思，所以翻譯時選擇在具體語言環境中最恰當。一本好的科技詞典可以成為你的良師益友，為此筆者推薦《英漢道路詞典》《漢英科技大詞典》兩本較好的詞典。
二、 科技英語中大量使用被動語態
被動語態在普通英語中是最基本的語法，簡單易學。科技英語中大量使用被動語態，不是為了追求文章語言的藝術美，而是為了講求敘述文章的客觀，語言簡潔，結構嚴謹，和普通英語文章有著顯著不同，加深讀者對所敘述事物的深刻印象，屏棄不必要的東西。例如：
1. Most primary highways are built and cared for by state governments.
大部分主要的公路都是由聯邦政府建造和管理。
這里…are built and cared for 就是被動語態
2. The proportion of the various ingredients which go into concrete , the way it is mixed , and even the water which is used are very important to the finished material.
製作混凝土所用的各種配料的比例，攪拌的方法，乃至所用的水，對成品材料來說都是十分重要的。
此句有兩處是被動語態。
三、 名詞化結構在各類科技文章中的大量使用
科技英語，在科技文體中隨著科學技術發展形成一種實用正式的文體，它的名詞化傾向越來越突出。翻譯時可以看出它是由及物動詞加-ment , -tion , -sion , -ence等後綴派生的名詞。這樣的表達可以語言簡潔、行文自然、造句靈活、敘述准確、表達客觀，符合科技文體的要求。例如：
The construction of such bridges has now been realized ;its realization being supported with all the achieuements of modern science .
這種橋梁的結構現在已經實現，它的實現是現代科學的偉大成就。
這里construction和realization都是名詞化結構
四、 翻譯遵循簡潔准確，避免誤譯的原則
英語是一種極富表現力的語言，漢語不僅有其發展的悠久歷史，也是蘊含信息量非常豐富的語言，同樣非常有利於思維。而且英漢對照翻譯的學問很深，當然是「八仙過海，各顯神通」。漢語具有概括性強，內涵豐富的特點，在科技文章中尤其體現的明顯。我在翻譯預應力混凝土這篇文章中「What does reinforced concrete mean for highway?」最初將其譯成「鋼筋混凝土對公路意味著什麼？」後來仔細考慮還是譯成「鋼筋混凝土的意義」為好。翻譯的時候要使譯文精練，我們可以把原文中一些功能詞或重復詞譯成較短的單詞，更符合我們漢語的習慣。如：The Role and Function of Bituminous 中的The Role and Function只需譯成「作用」即可。這點說明為什麼大多數英漢對照本書籍必須把英文字體印得很小才能做到和漢語同步。
五、 在翻譯時應注意詞義引申
翻譯時，有時會碰到某些詞在詞典上找不到適當的詞義，如任意硬套或逐詞死譯，譯文則會生硬晦澀，難以確切表達願意，甚至造成誤解。所以，應根據上下文和邏輯關系，從其基本含義出發，進一步加以引申，選擇適當的詞來表達。
例：The choice of material in construction of bridges is basically between steel or concrete, and main trouble with concrete is that its tensile strength is very small .
橋梁建築材料基本上仍在鋼材和混凝土之間選擇，而混凝土的主要缺點是抗拉強度低。
六、在翻譯時採用增詞法和重復法
增詞法就是在翻譯時根據句法上，意義上或修辭上的需要增加一些詞，以便能更加忠實通順地表達原文的思想內容。當然，增詞不是隨意的，而是基於英漢兩種語言表達方式的差異，增加原文中雖無其詞但內含其意的一些詞，以使譯文忠信流暢，這種情況在科技英語文獻翻譯時比較常見。
1.根據句法上的需要:由於英漢兩種語言表達方式存在差別，在英語中需要省略的成分而在漢語中需要補出才能符合漢語的習慣。
2根據意義上的需要:(1)英語復數名詞的增譯：復數名詞前後增譯「許多」、「一些」等，使其復數意義更明確；（2）英語中表示動作名詞的增譯：翻譯時可根據上下文語境，補充一些表示動作意義的名詞：「作用」、「現象」、「方案」等；（3）在英語名詞或動名詞前後增譯漢語動詞：（4）增譯解說性詞：英語中常因慣用法或上下文關系。省去了不影響理解全句意義的詞句。為了使譯文清晰起見，翻譯時必須增譯一些詞。
3.根據修辭上的需要：英譯漢時，有時需要在譯文中增加一些起連貫作用的詞，主要是連詞、副詞和代詞，以達到使句子連貫、行文流暢的修辭目的。
重復法實際上也是一種增詞法，只不過所增添的詞是上文出現過的詞。重復法是指譯文中重復原文中重要的或關鍵的詞，以期達到兩個目的；一是清楚，二是強調。從而使譯文生動有力，清晰流暢。
七、藉助於電腦中的各種翻譯軟體，結合上下文語境來翻譯科技英語能達到事半功倍的效果
我們一般都用中英文詞典來查詢生詞，這樣不但需要經常把詞典帶在身邊，而且在查詢翻譯生詞的時候也會花費很多的時間。現在隨著計算機技術迅速發展，網路技術的廣泛普及，很多英文翻譯軟體可以在網路上輕松找到。而我們利用便利的網路資源很快就可以獲取我們要查詢翻譯的英文單詞，當然我們查詢詞彙的時候會得到很多不同的翻譯結果，這時就需要我們結合上下文的語境來聯系的翻譯我們的文章，最終得到准確的翻譯結果。
我現在使用的查詢軟體是金山詞霸2007，我在遇到很多生僻的專業詞彙時就使用這些相關的翻譯軟體來幫我排憂解難。通過使用英文翻譯軟體可以使我們輕松的找到自己想查詢的英文單詞，使我們方便快捷的翻譯出那些讓我們以前花很大力氣才能翻譯出來的專業英語詞彙，使我們的英文翻譯工作達到事半功倍的效果。

TVs and Radios
TVs are more useful than radios. From TV you can see and hear what is happening in the world. However, radios are not disappearing. They are still with us. And the number of listeners is becoming larger. Do you know why?
One reason for this is the invention of the transistor. A transistor radio can be very small. It is very easy to be carried. Besides, radio broadcasts are better for blind people. A teacher just likes a shining star to students. Miss Fu, one of my English teacher, is a shining star in my life.
I happened to be in Miss Fu's class when I began my high school years. At that time, I dared not speak English aloud in public, for I was shy and my pronunciation and intonation① were poor. Afraid of being laughed at, I never put up my hand to answer the questions Miss Fu raised in class, even if I had some good answers to them. For a time, I even lost interest in practising spoken English. When Miss Fu found out the reason, she encouraged me to speak. First she bought me some English tapes and told me to listen to them carefully, and try to recite them.
