筆者已在歐洲生活多年，對這兩種餐飲文化已是耳濡目染，但一直執迷不悟。一天與一位經常遊走於中歐之間的同胞閑談才豁然開朗。中餐和西餐的核心區別，原來就下面在這幾點上。
A,餐桌——方桌與圓桌
中餐餐桌是圓桌（新式快餐及小吃部暫當別論），西餐餐桌是方桌——一圓一方，彰顯文化。
中國人到餐館吃飯是一個重要的交際行為。一般一個人出錢作東，大家一起圍一張圓桌，談天論地，便於交流、溝通。一般吃過幾次飯，喝過幾次酒，是衡量交情深淺的重要依據。圓桌，顯然是便於溝通的最佳就餐方式，為這種交際式就餐文化添磚加瓦。
