鉬的應用概況
鉬在鋼鐵工業中的應用居首要地位，占鉬總消耗量的80％左右，其次是化工領域，約佔10%。此外，鉬也被用於電氣和電子技術、醫葯和農業等領域，約占總消耗量的10％左右。
合金領域
鉬在鋼鐵領域的消費量最大，主要用於生產合金鋼（約占鉬在鋼鐵消耗總量中的43%）、不銹鋼（約23%）、工具鋼和高速鋼（約8%）、鑄鐵和軋輥（約6%）。鉬大部分是以工業氧化鉬壓塊後直接用於煉鋼或鑄鐵，少部分則先熔煉成鉬鐵，然後再用於煉鋼。鉬作為鋼的合金元素具有以下優點：提高鋼的強度和韌性；提高鋼在酸鹼溶液和液態金屬中的抗腐蝕性；提高鋼的耐磨性；改善鋼的淬透性、焊接性和耐熱性。例如，含鉬量為4%-5%的不銹鋼往往用於諸如海洋設備、化工設備等侵蝕、腐蝕比較嚴重的地方。
以鉬為基體加入其他元素（如鈦、鋯、鉿、鎢及稀土元素等）構成有色合金，這些合金元素不僅對鉬合金起到固溶強化和保持低溫塑性的作用，而且還能形成穩定的、彌散分布的碳化物相，提高合金的強度和再結晶溫度。鉬基合金因為具有良好的強度、機械穩定性、高延展性而被用於高發熱元件、擠壓磨具、玻璃熔化爐電極、噴射塗層、金屬加工工具、航天器的零部件等。
化工領域
潤滑劑：二氧化鉬是一種良好的固體潤滑劑，因為它的摩擦系數很低，屈服強度很高，能在真空和各種超低溫、高溫下正常使用，因而被廣泛應用於燃氣輪機、齒輪、模具、航空航天、核工業等領域。
催化劑：鉬的化合物是用途最廣的催化劑之一，被廣泛應用到化學、石油、塑料、紡織等行業。例如：二硫化鉬具有抗硫性質，可以在一定條件下催化一氧化碳加氫製取醇類物質，是很有前景的C1化學催化劑；鉬與鈷、鎳結合用作石油提煉預處理的催化劑。其他常見的含鉬催化劑有：二硫化鉬、氧化鉬、鉬酸鹽、仲鉬酸銨等。
顏料：鉻黃和鎘黃為當今世界最常用無機黃顏料，但是鉛、鉻、鎘都有毒，而鉬黃不僅無毒，還具有鮮艷的色澤，光、熱穩定性也好，因而被用於顏料和墨水、塑料、橡膠產品及陶瓷中。
有機聚合物的阻燃劑和消煙劑：在鹵代聚脂中加入3%-4％的三氧化鉬，可使臨界氧指數提高3％-4％，燃燒時碳的生成量增加4％左右，使煙霧量減少3%。
緩蝕劑：鉬酸鹽毒性非常低，對添加在緩蝕劑中的有機添加劑的腐蝕性很弱，常用在空調冷卻水和加熱系統的構造中，防止低碳鋼被腐蝕。
電子電氣領域
鉬具有良好的導電性和耐高溫性，熱膨脹系數與玻璃相近，被廣泛用於製造螺旋燈絲的芯線、引出線及掛鉤等部件。此外，鉬絲也是理想的電火花線切割機床用電極絲，能切割各種鋼材和硬質合金，其放電加工穩定，能有效提高模具精度。
單層的輝鉬材料具有良好的半導體特性，有些性能超過現在廣泛使用的硅和石墨烯，很有可能成為下一代半導體材料。美國加州納米技術研究院已經成功使用MoS2製造出了輝鉬基柔性微處理晶元，這個微晶元只有同等硅基晶元的20%大小，功耗極低，而輝鉬製成的晶體管在待機情況下的功耗為硅晶體管的十萬分之一，而且比同等尺寸的石墨烯電路更加廉價，其電路也有很強的柔性，極薄，可以附著在人體皮膚之上。
醫學領域
鉬是人體必需的微量元素之一，也是多種酶的組成部分，在機體的主要功能是參與硫、鐵、銅之間的相互反應。適量的鉬能夠促進人體發育，增強氧在體內的儲留下，抑制腫瘤，維護心肌的能量代謝，保護心肌，而鉬的缺乏會導致齲齒、腎結石、克山病、大骨節病、食道癌等疾病，因而鉬也被用於醫葯中，如鉬酸銨這種葯就主要用於長期依賴靜脈高營養的患者。
畜牧領域
鉬的生物學作用主要是依靠作為動物體內某些含鉬酶類的組成成分，間接影響酶的生物學活性來實現的。除此之外，鉬元素在反芻動物營養代謝中發揮著特殊的作用，一方面，鉬作為反芻動物瘤胃微生物硝酸鹽氧化酶的組成成分，直接參與瘤胃中飼料硝酸鹽的轉化，另一方面，鉬作為硫酸鹽氧化酶的輔助因子對瘤胃微生物有刺激作用，這有助於反芻動物對粗纖維類物質的消化，進而促進反芻動物的生長。所以，當牧草和飼料中鉬元素含量不足時，就需要按照嚴格的營養需要和工藝技術要求，將鉬元素添加劑加入飼料中，達到滿足動物需要的目的，最常見的例子就是在奶牛飼料中添加10mg/d的鉬。
農業領域
鉬為植物體內必須的「微量元素」之一，缺鉬會影響植物正常生長。作為植物生長所必須的微量元素，鉬不僅能促進植物對磷的吸收，還能加速植物體內醇類的形成與轉化，提高植物葉綠素和維生素丙的含量，提高植物的抗旱、抗寒以及抗病能力。鑒於鉬對植物的重要性，很多國家已經開始生產和使用含鉬的微量肥料
