Since the Great Plains stretch from the Canadian border to Texas，the climate in this region varies widely．North Dakota has extreme temperatures，strong winds，and low precipitation．Oklahoma，on the other hand，has a more temperate climate．The open treeless，unbroken land offers little protection against storms or against the rapid changes of weather that occur in this area．In winter，snow piles up to 6 meters high in some places．In summer，in these same places，both plants and animals may die from the extreme heat．In many parts of the plains states there is little rain． Water in such areas becomes more important than land．For thousands of farmers，a few inches more or a few inches less of rain ring the growing season may make the difference between success and failure．Extended periods of very hot weather ring a summer without rain may not only destroy crops but also turn the land into st．This st often turns into the infamous st storms of this area，destroying farms and farm buildings and leaving the land bare of all fertile soil.

The climate of the Midwest is temperate. The region lies in a great valley between the Allegheny Mountains to the east and the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains to the west. This is a largely open country, and the wind blows freely, often bringing sudden and extreme changes in temperature. Midwest summers are sometimes very hot; winters are sometimes extremely cold.

The states west of the Rocky Mountains have sharply different climatic conditions. This is largely because of the effects of the mountain ranges and the Pacific Ocean. Winds from the Pacific bring plenty of rain, yet these winds are conditioned by the mountains along the coast. Generally speaking, the western slopes of the Coastal Mountains are cool, rainy, and cloudy. The part of Washington near the Pacific Ocean has the highest rainfall in the country. But after crossing these mountains, very little rain falls and deserts appear.

外面的天氣如何? 要問別人外面的天氣如何, 最簡單的問法就是, "What's the weather like out there?" 或是我們可以用一個很簡單的 it 來代表天氣, 像是 "What's it like out there?" 這樣講也可以. 還有要是你不喜歡用 What 來作問句, 你也可以簡單地說, "How is the weather out there?" 但是如果我們想問別人未來的某一個時間會不會出太陽或是會不會下雨, 例如我想問人家星期一會下雨嗎? 像這種情況我們就可以說, "Is it supposed to rain on Monday?" 這里用到了一個 be suppose to 的片語, 這種講法是老美最喜歡的. 再比方說吧, 如果我們假設明天有什麼活動, 我們常常會要求別人先看看明天會不會出太陽或下雨, 這種情況老美他們會說, "Why don't you check and see if it's sunny tomorrow?" We had a downpour. 我們剛遇到了一場傾盆大雨. 中文裡常形容下雨像是用「倒」的一樣, 這在英文里也有同樣對等的字眼喔! 英文里用的是 downpour 這個字. 形容下雨像是用倒的一樣 (pour 單獨解就是倒水的意思). 所以下雨像是用倒的我們可以說, "We had a downpour." 另外有一個十分口語的講法, "It's really coming down out there." 也是形容雨下得很大, 像是用「倒」的一樣. 5. It's just sprinkling. 只是在下毛毛雨而已. 在英文里不管下毛毛雨或是毛毛雪我們都可以用 drizzle 和 sprinkle 這兩個動詞來表示. Drizzle 這個字就是氣象術語里「下毛毛雨」的意思. 而 sprinkle 則是一個動詞表示「撒」, 但也常被用來形容毛毛雨, 常聽到的用法就是, "It's drizzling." 或是 "It's sprinkling." 另外還有一個字叫 scattered rain. 指的則是零零星星地降雨. 例如, "We have to cancel the track and field contest because of the scattered rain." (因為零星的降雨所以我們必須取消田徑賽. ) 6. You need to put on your sweater because it's freezing. 你必須穿上你的毛衣因為外面很冷. 形容天氣冷有幾個形容詞可以使用, chilly 指的是天氣有點「涼」, cold 指的是「冷」, 而 freezing 指的則是「凍」. 除了 freezing 之外, 我室友還教我一個俚語, "It's colder than a witch's titty." 也可以形容天氣很冷, (還可以形容不友善 unfriendly ) 不過我想這不是什麼好話, 因為當時他女朋友一直試圖要阻止他教我這一句俚語. 至於各種冷的程度完全視個人而定, 像我可能覺得攝氏五度以下就算是 freezing 了, 可是你相不相信, 這種溫度時還有老美穿著 T 恤在校園里走來走去呢! 我想他們覺得這種溫度只是 chilly 吧! 不過嚴格上說起來, 只有攝氏零度以下才能說是 freezing. 因為 freeze 是指液體凝結成固體, 而 freezing point 則是指「冰點」.水的冰點是攝氏零度, 所以照理說零度以下才能算是 freezing 啦! 不過平常何時使用 freezing 則是看個人的感受而定了, 不需嚴格去界定. Bonus: 溫度零度是用 zero degrees, 而非 zero degree. 許多人常犯這個錯誤. 7. It's burning up out there. 外面熱得跟火爐似的. 以前還沒來美國之前常以為美國的冬天比較冷, 所以夏天一定比較不熱. 後來我才知道真是大錯特錯. 美國東岸夏天的溫度有時會超過華氏 100 度, (相當於攝氏 37.8 度), 在這種高溫下人體不能自然散熱, 簡直就像是火爐一樣. 在英文里要形容天氣像「火爐」一樣, 我們可以說, "It's burning up out there." 另外我們也可以說熱得跟地獄一樣, "It's hot as hell." 或是意思一樣, 俚語的講法, "It's hot as Hades." 這個 Hades 在這里也是指地獄 (hell) 的意思. 8. We can't play tennis today because It's too windy. 我們今天不能打網球因為風太大了. 「刮著風」老美通常用形容詞 windy 這個字來形容. 例如 "It's windy." 簡單明了. 如果是刮著「微風」, 我們還可以用 "It's breezy." 來形容. 另外以前我考 GRE 時學過一個單字 gusty 意指刮著強風的, 但是平常幾乎聽不到老美用這個字, 頂多就是聽氣象預報時偶爾會聽到一兩次而己. 所以我們還是乖乖地用 windy 和 breezy 比較實在. 還有如果沒有風天氣很「悶熱」要用哪個形容詞? 我聽老美用的是 muggy 這個詞. 我知道還有一個 GRE 單字 sultry 同樣也指「悶熱」的 (也可當「風騷」解), 但口語上好像比較少聽老美這么說. 9.
