公元前190年，楚漢相爭，漢將韓信攻打未央宮，利用風箏測量未央宮下面的地道的距離。而垓下之戰，項羽的軍隊被劉邦的軍隊圍困，韓信派人用牛皮作風箏，上敷竹笛，迎風作響（一說張良用風箏系人吹簫）漢軍配合笛聲，唱起楚歌，渙散了楚軍士氣，這就是成語「四面楚歌」的故事。
在正史中也有關於風箏的記載，時間較五代更早，其一是南朝的「侯景之亂」，梁武帝被侯景圍困，城牆被包圍。曾放風箏向外求援，據南史卷八十《侯景傳》中所述，在梁武帝蕭衍大清三年（公元549年）時，侯景作亂，叛軍將武帝圍困於梁都建鄴（即今南京），內外斷絕，有人獻計製作紙鴉，把皇帝詔令系在其中，當時太子簡文在太極殿外，乘西北風施放向外求援，不幸被叛軍發覺射落，不久台城即遭攻陷，梁朝從此也衰微滅亡。這是簡文施放風箏向外求救不幸失敗的故事。
相傳在公元前五世紀時，希臘的阿爾克達斯就發明了風箏，可惜後來失傳。直到公元十三世紀，義大利人馬可波羅從中國返回歐洲後，風箏才開始在西方傳播開來。
