現在大家比較認可的是楊憲益和戴乃迭夫婦翻譯的英譯本《紅樓夢》，譯為「The Dream of Red Mansion」。楊憲益夫婦是大翻譯家，我本不敢亂說什麼，但我想了很多年，還是覺得，這樣翻譯實際上是翻譯錯了，斗膽說出來，供大家研究、討論。我覺得，《紅樓夢》里所說的「紅樓」並不是「紅色公寓(Red Mansion)」的意思，正如「青樓」不是指「青色的樓」，而是指「妓院」一樣。這里，「紅樓」是指「女兒樓」，或者叫「閨房」，是女孩出嫁之前居住的地方。如果把「紅樓」翻譯成為「Red Mansion」就完全沒有這種「女兒樓」的意思了。但如果僅僅是這個「女兒樓」 的意思，那還比較好翻譯，因為在西方，也有女孩出嫁之前居住的「閨房」，如「boudoir」的意思就是「閨房，女人的卧室或化妝室、起居室」。但如果把《紅樓夢》翻譯為「The dream of Boudoir」仍然是不妥的，因為西方的「閨房」與中國的「閨房」是完全不同的。西方的「閨房」僅僅是女子出嫁之前居住的地方，僅僅是女人的卧室。但中國的「閨房」卻有著更為深刻的文化內涵。中國住在「閨房」里的千金小姐是「大門不出，二門不邁」的，實際上，是處在一種自我封閉，或者說，是處在一種被軟禁的狀態。越是高官貴族的千金小姐，越是處於一種嚴密的監視和控制之下，處於一種封閉的狀態之中，除自己家裡人外，不能與任何男性說話或來往。這在西方簡直是不可思議的。在西方的封建社會里，女孩出嫁前比中國女孩自由多了，她們可以不受任何限制地與男性來往。西方的封建社會，遠不如中國的封建社會那樣封建。所以，西方的「閨房」沒有中國「閨房」里那種封閉的含義。如果把《紅樓夢》翻譯成「The Dream of Boudoir」仍然不能准確地表達出中國所特有的文化內涵。
其實，歸根到底，夢是人做的，不是房子做的，所以，不如索性譯為「The Dream of the Girls」。女孩的夢，東西方都有，也都差不多。未婚女子對愛情的憧憬和追求，東西方也都差不多。《紅樓夢》實際上寫的不是賈寶玉的夢，而是金陵十二釵的夢，更准確地說，是「The Dream of the 12 Girls」。我覺得，這樣翻譯也許比「The Dream of Red Mansion」更准確一些。
或者，乾脆迴避開，索性就叫《石頭記》吧。「The Story of the Stone」就不會有任何爭議了。
