Rats can use the rhythm of human language to tell the difference between Dutch and Japanese, researchers in Spain reported.
Their study suggests that animals, especially mammals, evolved some of the skills underlying the use and development of language long before language itself ever evolved, the researchers said.
It is the first time an animal other than a human or monkey has been shown to have this skill. For their study neuroscientists Juan Toro and colleagues at Barcelona's Scientific Park tested 64 alt male rats. They used Dutch and Japanese because these languages were used in earlier, similar tests, and because they are very different from one another in use of words, rhythm and structure. The rats were trained to respond to either Dutch or Japanese using food as a reward. Then they were separated into four groups -- one that heard each language spoken by a native, one that heard synthesized speech, one that heard sentences read in either language by different speakers and a fourth that heard the languages played backwards。Rats rewarded for responding to Japanese did not respond to Dutch and rats trained to recognize Dutch did not respond the spoken JapaneseThe rats could not tell apart Japanese or Dutch played backwards。Results showed that rats could discriminate natural sentences when uttered by a single speaker and not when uttered by different ones, nor could they distinguish the languages when spoken by different people; the researchers wrote Human newborns have the same problem, although tamarins can easily tell languages apart even when spoken by different people, the researchers saidThe study shows which abilities that humans use for language are shared with other animals, and which are uniquely human. It also suggests what sort of evolutionary precursor's language might have.

Tigers are fierce animals. They are the bosses of the Asian jungles with their cleverness, quickness and strength. A pussycat, on the other hand, is a homebody that comforts us with its gentle warmth and calms us with its purring.
As a mother, the Chinese-American writer Amy Chua is definitely a tiger. Her book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother(虎媽戰歌) . tells of the strict upbringing she gave her two children. She thinks that being strict is the only way to develop a child's potential(潛力) and to make them strong, independent and successful. Her kids were not allowed to watch TV or play video
games. They were not allowed to "hang out" with other kids after school. They ha
d to be the top students in their classes. And they had to practice the piano
and violin for hours every day. As a result, her kids became successful. She admits this caused a lot of tears and anger but she has few regrets (後悔).

All plant cells are capable of taking up water. Even dead ones do to a certain degree. Absorption of water by dead cell walls makes wood become larger. In common land plants, the living cells of roots take up most of the water. Land plants without roots do exist, however. Those greenish-yellow lichens(苔蘚)you seen on rocks in the high mountains have no roots. Half a billion years ago, when water plants started to enter the land, the first land plants did not have roots.
Even among the flowering plants, one finds rootless forms. These flowering plants are "the higher plants" because they evolved(進化) recently and are thus considered higher on the evolutionary scale(進化樹). In the Peruvian desert, there grows one of these rootless higher plants, a bromeliad. It is a relative of the pineapple. Even if this plant had roots, they would be of no use, because the place where the plant grows never rains. The plant gets its water only from the dew(露水)it collects at night, when its leaves cool off. Such rootless plants, of course, can be moved with ease, but they will only grow when they are placed out in the open. If they are placed too near a house, the radiation from the heat of the house prevents the leaves from cooling and prevents dew from forming, then the plant dies. In the southern United States and in Puerto Rico, one sees bromeliads growing high above the streets on the insulation(絕緣物)of electric wires. These plants get their water from rain, and the only soil they ever come in contact with is the st that may blow on their leaves.

According to a survey, more than two thirds of people in China agree that, the public moral level is lower than before. This figure, although hard to accept, has indicated the fact that the nation』s overall morality is declining. If you pay some attention, you could easily point out some improper behaviors happening around: young men refusing to give seats to the old on buses; shoppers jamming into queue instead of waiting in line; crude riders neglecting red lights, etc. So what the hell is going on?
As analysts have figured out, this trend of degradation mainly originated from faulty ecation. For decades, Chinese schools simply infuse bookish knowledge to their students, whilst moral cultivation becomes a kind of formalism; on the other hand, children are naturally influenced by their family and other alts in the society, most of whom are too sophisticated to be considered as eligible moral models.
Facing such disappointing condition, you may ask: how can things become better? As far as I am concerned, we must following these three steps. First of all: self-shaping. We should manage ourselves well, and try to shape our own morality as perfect as possible. The second step: family-shaping, which is to behave as the model for your children and improve their moral status through strict discipline. The third: organization-shaping. If you are leading people, such as being a manager or national president, you could reinforce your whole organization』s moral situation with policy and your own action. Even if you』re no leader, you』ll have a positive impact on the society if only you manage yourself well and try to influence others as much as possible.

Animal Shelters should serve as cornerstones for their communities』 efforts to end dog and cat overpopulation. The following qualities are essential to a humane, effective shelter.

* Active, preventative programs aimed at recing the number of animals who must be killed; e.g., aggressive public ecation campaigns about dog and cat overpopulation, efforts to implement differential licensing which rewards owners of neutered animals with lower license fees, spay/neuter subsidies and referrals.
* Spay/neuter surgery strictly required for all adopted animals. Best way to ensure compliance: neutering all animals before they go to new homes.
* Adoption process and policies that place the animals』 well being first.
* Clean, comfortable surroundings; skilled, compassionate care; a sound program of hygiene and health care.
* Painless method of euthanasia for animals who are not adopted.

I can think of nothing more rewarding than resucing an homeless animal. But before choosing your new pet, be sure you know all the facts about pet overpopulation. I want to see all dogs find homes, but not at the expense of deceiving compassionate people.

Yes, I've heard ALL of the negative rumors about dog breeders. Some say they're to blame for the suffering of millions of unwanted dogs. But very few people actually do their homework before repeating these myths.

The VAST majority of unwanted dogs are of mixed breed: mutts. These mixes were received as pets, purchased for free or very little money. They're young animals, were often owned by young alts who were moving and usually have behavior problems that the owner felt unable to cope with.

I believe that most dogs should be altered and that each family should seriously consider giving a home to a homeless dog. But I also commend breeders who are devoted to maintaining a quality, pure breed. Quality purebred dogs - with good temperaments, sold to dedicated owners at a price reflecting their quality - are not and will never be part of the problem of unwanted animals.
