提這種問題，一定對英文有興趣。我的一貫原則是，對有興趣的東西就要當專業一樣去學，要以專業的標準的來要求——即使做不到，也能有所收獲。
我認為，學任何語言，在本質上是一樣的，不用不著強調「第二外語」或「第三外語」的特殊，盡管確實有特殊的地方。所以，中文讀什麼書，英文也應該讀什麼書。我學中文，大概跟中文系古典文學專業的一樣，可能比他們還偏一點兒；我想學英文也如此，不但學「科技英語」，也要學英語文學。「科技英語」有點兒像八股文，有好的，壞的更多——中文也一樣。我們能判別中文的好壞，因為讀過很多好中文；我們不容易判別一篇英文的優劣，因為我們讀的好英文不夠多。
第一要緊的是語感。
1）句式。這是形式上中英文差別最大的一點，不說也知道；但熟悉每一種句式，正是閱讀（還有寫作）的第一塊磚頭。
2）用詞。在語境中體會單詞的意義與查字典是不同的。英漢詞典里對單詞的「翻譯」，幾乎都不能直接套用在實際的句子里。英漢詞典只能作為參考，而不能作為翻譯的「對照表」。反過來，詞典里譯為相同中文的單詞，在英文的語境里也許沒有一點兒相似的地方。
3）語氣。單個句子好像都明白，但整個段落讀下來，你的感覺可能與譯文表達的意思不一樣，其間的差別，就在對語氣的把握。
4）邏輯。這是與3）相關的，邏輯不一定通過「因為所以」等關聯詞來表現，也可能隱含在語詞里。另外，同樣的邏輯關系，中英文的表達差別很大。
我們平常閱讀時，只關心文字的意思和精神，不會花大工夫去摳字眼兒，所以「正常」的閱讀，即使很仔細，也不會「細致入微」。為了讓自己不得不鑽牛角尖兒，最簡單也最費氣力的就是自己做些翻譯。在翻譯中會遇到很多意想不到的問題，如果不做翻譯，那些問題可能被一直忽略。
英文不能直接譯成中文，中文當然也不能直接譯成英文——如果寫的英文就像從中文翻譯來的，肯定不會是好英文。所以，翻譯訓練對英文寫作有莫大的幫助。翻譯的最好結果就是在寫作和翻譯中消滅翻譯的痕跡。
第二是視野。
武夷山老師在講口譯經驗時說「功夫在外」，我想對提高閱讀能力也同樣重要。這兒的「外功」，是語言以外的東西，如歷史、文化和生活。沒有生活在歐美文化環境下，只能通過多讀不同花色的英文，在閱讀中模擬、適應和熟悉不同的生活和思想方式。像武老師說的，多讀課本是好辦法。我為了學英文買過很多課本，如化學、經濟學、生理學、解剖學、心理學、人類學、考古學、營養學、園藝學、商務管理、人力資源等等，其中好多東西我從來沒有興趣，中文都很少看。遺憾的是，書有了，我從頭到尾看下來的很少。
說起解剖學，想起一個例子。我有英漢雙語版兩大卷Wolf-Heidegger』s Atlas of Human Anatomy，前言有句話感覺很別扭：
即使不管內容，中文似乎是不該這樣說的。原文是
Accustomed ring the school years to place greater trust in the written word than in his own senses, the young medical student in his first pre-clinical term is faced with a problem which Goethe aptly describes as 「hardest of all」: He has to learn how to see.
這句話很簡單，但譯文還是錯了，譯者沒認出歌德。多數人都認識歌德，所以這個錯誤還不算典型。問題也許是，作者本該說a student，卻用了the。是不是因為前面的從句給了限定，用the也行？對翻譯來說，這兒還有一個問題：落實引號的內容——顯然，作者引用了歌德的句子。在這個例子中，即使不知道出處，也不大影響意思，但會影響中文的准確表達——例如那個翻譯就全錯了；即使模糊過去，心裡也該留下問題。幸運的是，我找到了歌德的一句格言：
「What is hardest of all? That which seems most simple: to see with your eyes what is before your eyes.」
假如人物不像歌德那麼有名，引語難以查找，那就很可能影響理解。也許因為看多了中國古典文學作品的疏證，我遇到類似的「典故」，總想找到它的出處。現在從網路搜索，省事兒多了；關鍵是要對那些詞兒「敏感」。我還記得，Pais在愛因斯坦的傳記里引用了弗洛伊德的一個詞兒，現在也沒找到出處——讀書還是太少了！
第三是字典。網路檢索比字典方便多了，不過還是應該准備些隨時可以翻閱的紙質的工具書，除了流行的學習詞典（如Oxford, Longman, Collins, Webster等）而外，還有用法詞典、搭配詞典、同義詞詞典、引語詞典、典故詞典、習語詞典等等，它們對閱讀和寫作的幫助，大大的；當消遣來讀，也好玩兒。另外，最好再准備一本大辭典，如Webster第三國際（坦白說，我自己很少用它；但比我更用功的同學，也許用得著）。我更喜歡的是OED，可惜20大卷太貴，也不便於翻檢；幸好還有一個簡編本Shorter Oxford English Dictionary。OED的特色在於它的歷史主義原則。每個詞在哪個年代是什麼意思，有什麼經典例句，都清楚羅列出來。用這個詞典，我們就不會用今天的意思去解讀莎翁的作品了。

曾經我的英語成績也算可以，我就提幾點建議吧：
1、單詞是必須要記的，但是也專不是死記硬背，你可以在做屬練習的時候記，通過做題目來掌握自己不認識不理解的單詞不失為一個好的方法。
2、抓閱讀，俗話說「得閱讀者得天下」，所以你要盡量讓自己每天做一兩篇閱讀，以此來保持自己的手感和思維。
3、其次重要的是聽力，要每天的早上聽一些習題，當然要堅持不懈，以至於可以讓自己沒有陌生感
4、至於寫作方面的話要記得背模板作文，記住一些框架以及常用的連詞啊，句型之類的
記單詞的話選擇在早上或者睡覺前記憶=可能會比較有效果。
