他找到智者。智者沉思良久，默然舀起一瓢水，問：「這水是什麼形狀？」這人搖頭：「水哪有什麼形狀？」智者不答，只是把水倒入杯子，這人恍然大悟似的說：「我知道了，水的形狀像杯子。」智者沒有回答，又把杯子中的水倒入旁邊的花瓶，這人又說：「我又知道了，水的形狀像花瓶。」智者搖頭，輕輕提起花瓶，把水輕輕倒入一個盛滿沙土的盆。清清的水便一下溶入沙土，不見了。
這人陷入了沉思。
智者俯身抓起一把沙土，嘆道：「看，水就這么消失了，這也是一生！」
這個人對智者的話咀嚼了良久，高興地說：「我知道了，您是通過水告訴我，社會處處像一個個規則的容器，人應該像水一樣，盛進什麼容器就是什麼形狀。而且，人還極可能在一個規則的容器中消逝，就像這水一樣，消逝的無影無蹤，而且一切無法改變！」這人說完，眼睛緊盯著智者的眼睛，他急於得到智者的肯定。
「是這樣。」智者拈須，轉而又說：「又不是這樣！」說完，智者出門，這人隨後。在屋檐下，智者蹲下身，用手在青石板的台階上摸了一會兒，然後頓住。這人把手伸向剛才智者手指所觸之地，他感到有一個凹處。他迷惑，他不知道這本來平整的石階上的「小窩」藏著什麼玄機。
智者說：「一到雨天，雨水就會從屋檐落下，看，這個凹處就是水落下長期打擊的結果。」
此人於是大悟：「我明白了，人可能被裝入規則的容器，但又像這小小的水滴，改變著堅硬的青石板，直到破壞容器。」
智者說：「對，這個窩會變成一個洞！」
這個人答：「那麼，我找到答案了！」
智者不語，用微笑和沉默與這個人對話。這人離開了智者，重新回到了社會，他用行動與智者對話。這世間又多了一個充滿活力的人。
