①我高一時念的英文課本,是奧爾珂德的《小婦人》。文中馬區夫人對女兒們說的兩句話:「眼因流多淚水而愈益清明,心因飽經憂患而愈益溫厚。」全班同學都讀了又讀,感到有無限啟示。其實,我們那時的少女情懷,並未能體會什麼憂患,只是喜愛文學語言本身的美。
②又有一次,讀謝冰心的散文,非常欣賞「雨後的青山,好像淚洗過的良心」一句,覺得她的比喻實在清新鮮活。不知愁的少女,總是喜歡寫淚與愁的詩。看到白居易新樂府中的詩句:「莫染紅素絲,徒誇好顏色。我有雙淚珠,知君穿不得……」大家都喜歡得顛來倒去地背。老師說:「白居易固然比喻得很巧妙,卻不及杜甫的四句詩,既寫實,卻又更深刻沉痛,境界尤高,那就是『莫自使淚枯,收汝淚縱橫。眼枯即見骨,天地總無情』。」
③他又問我們:「眼淚是滾滾而下的,怎麼會橫流呢?」我搶先回答:「因為老人的臉布滿皺紋,所以淚水就沿著皺紋橫流起來……」大家聽了都笑,老師也頷首微笑說:「你懂得就好。但多少人能體會老淚縱橫的悲傷呢?」

⑥記得兒子幼年時,我常常要為他的冥頑不靈而掉淚,兒子還奇怪地問:「媽媽,你為什麼哭呀?」他爸爸說:「媽媽不是哭,是一粒沙子掉進眼裡,要用淚水沖出來。」孩子傻愣愣地摸摸我滿是淚痕的臉。他哪裡知道,他就是那一粒沙子呢?
⑦沙子進入眼睛,非要淚水才能把它沖洗出來,難怪奧爾珂德說「眼因流多淚水而愈益清明」了。
⑧記得有兩句詩說:「玫瑰花瓣上顫抖的露珠,是天使的眼淚嗎?」想像得真美。然而我還記得阿拉伯詩人所編的故事:「天使的眼淚,落入正在張殼賞月的牡蠣體內,變成一粒珍珠。」其實是牡蠣為了努力排除體內的沙子,分泌液體,將沙子裹起來,反而形成一粒圓潤的珍珠。可見,生命在奮斗過程中,是多麼艱苦!這一粒珍珠,又何嘗不是牡蠣的淚珠呢?
⑨最後聽一位畫家介紹嶺南畫派的一張名畫,是一尊流淚的觀音,坐在深山岩石上。他解說慈悲的觀音願為世人負擔所有的痛苦與罪孽,所以一直流著淚。眼淚不為一己的悲痛而為芸芸眾生而流,佛的慈悲真不能不令人流下感激的淚。
