歷史背景：

這個故事類型通常包含以下因素：一位善良而不幸的女主人公，女主人公母親的離世，新家庭成員對女主人公的欺侮，幫助女主人公克服難題並最終為她帶來幸福的神奇力量，用於識別女主人公的一件物事——鞋。

因此斯蒂·湯普森（Stith Thompson）在《民間文學母題索引》(Motif-Index of Folk Literature)中，把「灰姑娘」故事歸為阿奈爾－湯普森故事類型。

我國唐代段成式在其編撰的《酉陽雜俎》續集《支諾皋》里所記錄的《葉限》故事是世界上「灰姑娘」型民間故事的最早記載（約為公元9世紀中期）。在這個故事裡，幫助女主人公的是魚骨頭，為她帶來幸福的是只金履。

但因為《葉限》的記錄年代更確切更久遠，以及文本中所暗示的當時民眾對此故事常有耳聞的語氣，使得「葉限」故事看起來似更接近於此型故事的本來面目，因而有些學者由此認為該類故事起源於中國。

1697年，巴黎出版的佩羅(Charles Perrault)的《Histoires ou contes temps passé，avec des moralités: Contes de ma mère l'Oye》（《鵝媽媽的故事》）。
