The above quote, from Bloomfield, Coombs and Owen's chapter in Management of Information and Communication Technologies (Mansell ed., quote from p. 146), illustrates the power that language has. One doesn't even need to look to esoteric, specialist discussion to realise that language is a facilitator of the flow of power. It is a substrate that links people, and allows them to co-ordinate and construct systems, ideas based on groups rather than indivials.
Every word in a language is a "term". Every word has both meaning and assumption. And this is why language barriers are more than mere communication barriers, and why something is always "lost in translation". A language has society and emotion in its very essence. It evolves as a people evolves. To understand a language, then, is to live within it and its culture. This is where swear words get their power from, why politicans squabble over the meaning of their soundbites, and why media is in a constant emotional struggle, rather than being able to stick to pure "fact". Indifference is next to impossible, because language itself is not grown that way.

You have heard it said, 「Knowledge is power,」 but this is only true if you have the ability to unpack your knowledge and put it to action. Knowledge is power, but we need language to effectively communicate what we know and how we know it. Language is power because language is communication. Not having a good control of the language will often discredit a person who is otherwise very intelligent. An effective communicator is able to get what he/she wants through the control of the language. Language is how we express our ideas. Language is how we are able to reconcile a disagreement through discussion. We can use language to manipulate others, or use it to bring enlightenment. We use language to sell ourselves, our procts, and our ideas. The greater command we have of language, the greater we will be at self-expression. Additionally, with a greater command of language we will be able to understand others and help others to understand ourselves.
Imagine yourself dropped into a country with a completely unfamiliar culture and a completely unknown language to you. Imagine the helpless state you would be in. You might be able to use hand signals or charades, but think of how limited that would be. Not only would the population seem strange to you, but you would be strange to them as well. Would they trust you? How could you communicate to them you were friendly? What if you did something that was offensive in their culture? You』d have no way of knowing unless you could understand their language. This is an extreme example, but it reveals how vital the ability to express yourself clearly is in regards to becoming successful in all areas: politics, careers, and relationships. In order to have trust with anyone, we must learn to 「speak their language.」 Before I finished college, I spent many years working at a university as a custodian. The facilities department constantly changed its policies, and our boss, who was college ecated, would come and tell us about the new expectations, the reasons for the changes, etc. After her speech I would often have half the crew come to me and ask me what she meant, because she often spoke at a level that was over their ecation. With my background, I was able to understand my boss, and communicate what she said to my coworkers at their level of understanding.
A larger vocabulary gives us more creative ways to express ourselves. It also enables us to be more clear and precise in what we mean. However, a good command of the language is also knowing when to use the vocabulary we have. When I finally made it to college, I was exposed to a lot of new words, a lot of big words that I had to use in my papers if I wanted to make the grade, and those words eventually seeped into my everyday speech. That was good when I was in class or when I was in a discussion about some deep issue or world issue with a professor or college peer, but I found that when I talked to some friends who had not the desire or financial means for college, I came across as arrogant. If the purpose of communication is to get our neighbors to understand our point of view or to come to a new understanding about something we feel is important then we need to be careful not to win an argument with big words, but to speak in a way which they can understand what is said so they will be able to make their own judgment about the facts or truth you believe you are presenting. The power of language is not just in knowing words and knowing how to use words effectively, but also being able to speak and communicate at various levels, and knowing when it is needed to do so.

10. 如何提高英語的閱讀能力

高中英語閱讀教學是高中英語教學中極為重要的部分。我們英語教學的目的就是要培養學生獨立閱讀能力和應用語言的能力。而且,在近幾年的高考試題中閱讀理解能力題佔60%,這就進一步要求我們在教學中必須注意培養學生英語閱讀理解能力。

1、充分利用教材中的課文進行閱讀訓練,改革課堂教學結構,使精讀與泛讀緊密結合,強調獨立閱讀課文,旨在形成能力,每教一篇新課文時,先讓學生用10-20分鍾進行快速閱讀,同時做課文的理解題,然後,再按精讀要求,給學生指定段落,讓他們自己研究主要語言點,鼓勵他們提問和討論,以求弄懂。精讀也全是由學生自己去研讀,改變了那種課堂中從泛讀到精讀,全由教師包講到底的局面,使學生自學能力得到提高。

2、每課時抽出10分鍾進行聽力和快速閱讀訓練。選用150個詞左右、難度適中的短文,?再加5-10個理解檢測題,讓學生在限定時間內迅速讀完全文,完成閱讀理解題。然後檢查閱讀速度和理解准確率,進行輔導講評。

3、開展課外閱讀活動。要提高學生的閱讀能力和自學能力只進行快速閱讀訓練是不夠的。?以每周1000個詞來計算,學生一個學期只能完成1-1.5萬個詞的閱讀量,不足以便學生從中獲取到獨立閱讀英語文章的基本技巧。所以,除快速閱讀外,我還開展了課外閱讀活動,目的在於增加閱讀量。向學生提供較多而且題材較廣的短小成篇的閱讀材料,並要求學生相互交換各自的不同閱讀材料,要求每人每天課外閱讀600個詞的短文,?這樣,既增加了閱讀量,又擴大了學生的知識面,提高了學生的閱讀興趣。

4、認真選好讀物。讀物的選擇對閱讀的效果起著重要作用。如果讀物選擇不當,就會影響學生的閱讀興趣。因此,我在選擇讀物時盡量選一些內容健康,思想性強的文章。使學生在發展閱讀能力的同時,受到了潛移默化的思想品德教育。而且所選讀物內容廣泛、新穎,體裁和題材多種多樣,語言質朴生動,引人入勝,寓學習於消遣之中,所以學生讀起來愛不釋手,增強了學生的閱讀興趣。

最重要的是我所選材料適合學生的實際知識水平,難度與課文相當,內容盡可能與課文相聯系,生詞率控制在2--3%,難易適當,使學生讀得輕松愉快,在快樂中獲得知識,增強了他們搞好閱讀的信心。

5、閱讀要講求效率。效率體現在閱讀速度和閱讀能力兩個方面,讀速的提高與讀量是密切相關的。閱讀要以量求質。我給學生定的閱讀總量為40萬個詞左右,?每天堅持10分鍾,讀速定為60wPM左右。要求准確理解率達70%以上,實踐證明,一般水平的學生通過努力是不難達到這個指標的。

6、把閱讀的輔導落到實處。閱讀基本上是在課外進行,以學生自學為主教師輔導為輔,但是沒有得力措施就很難保證持續地開展。為了扎扎實實地搞好閱讀,除對讀量、讀速嚴格要求並記錄在案進行評比以外,我主要對學生的閱讀方法和技巧進行了指導。

A、指點學生養成正確的閱讀習慣。實驗初期,我發現有些學生在閱讀過程中往往帶有一些不良習慣。如有的學生閱讀時愛出聲;有的學生用筆和尺之類的東西指點著助讀;有的用眼不科學,每次只能看到一個單詞;有的則咬文嚼字,邊讀邊查詞典,一詞一句地分析;有的學生「回視」的現象太嚴重,在閱讀時,眼睛往往往回看,重讀一個詞、短語、一個句子,不僅影響讀速而且不利於把握整個句於、段落、全句的意義。我幫助學生逐步改掉了這些不良習慣,使他們養成了良好的默讀習慣。幫助他們盡力減少眼停次數,擴大規力范圍,能在單位時間里捕捉更多的語言信息。

B、指點學生閱讀時抓住文中重點段,段中主題句和句中的關鍵詞。教給學生根據上下文猜測詞、句意義的辦法。閱讀中難免碰上生詞,讓學生碰到生詞不驚慌,因為它不是孤立存在的,而是可以通過一定線索或可根據構詞法、同義詞、反義詞、等同關系、因果關系或上下文暗示猜出詞義。

C、指點學生「依綱」閱讀。這個綱就是文章的理解題,每篇材料都配有相應的閱讀理解題,既可以做為理解檢查題,又可做為閱讀的提綱。一般的學生都是先閱讀短文,再看問題,回頭看短文,然後做選擇答案。我指導學生的另一種做法是先看問題,後讀短文,再做選擇答案,這樣使學生的閱讀速度大大地提高了。
首先,我們要對「閱讀理解能力」及對四級閱讀理解的具體要求作一定的了解。教學大綱要求 「較強的閱讀能力」包括較快的閱讀速度和較強的理解能力。所謂「較強的理解能力」,在四級統考中主要體現在閱讀理解部分重點測試的下述四種能力:

1.掌握所讀材料的主旨和大意。
2.了解說明主旨和大意的事實和細節。
3.既理解字面的意思,又能根據所讀材料進行一定的判斷和推論。
4.既理解個別句子的意義,又理解上下文的邏輯關系。

大學英語四級考試的5個項目中,大多數考生感到發怵的是閱讀理解部分。一接觸閱讀理解,考生即有一種談「讀」色變、茫然無措的感覺。這主要說明考生對閱讀理解的有關事項並不熟悉,因而影響了考生閱讀理解水平的發揮,進而也限制了考生英語綜合能力的提高。

大學英語教學的主要目的是培養學生具有較強的閱讀能力,一定的聽的能力,以及初步的寫和說的能力,使學生能以英語為工具,獲取本專業所需要的信息,並為進一步提高英語水平打下較好的基礎。由此可見,閱讀在大學英語學習中是何等的重要。為體現教學大綱的這一主導思想,大學英語四級考試把閱讀理解放在了重中之重的位置,此項分值佔40%,實為考生通過英語四級的關鍵所在。

閱讀理解部分一般為四篇短文,每篇250到300字,加上其後的5個問題,平均400到450字,總閱讀量1800字上下;共回答20個問題。閱讀理解部分的答題時間為35分鍾,每篇平均8分45秒。教學大綱規定四級閱讀速度每分鍾50—80個英語單詞,因此,四級統考中的閱讀量與用時安排和教學大綱的要求完全一致。

根據四級考試大綱的規定,閱讀理解部分四篇短文的選材遵循如下三個方面的原則:

1.題材廣泛。可以包括人物傳記、社會、文化、日常知識、科普常識等,在實考中已經出現或可能出現的題材還有環境保護、交通運輸、最新科技成果、歷史事件、重大時事等等。但是,短文所涉及的背景知識應能為考生所理解。

2.體裁多樣。可以包括記敘文、描述文、說明文和議論文4種,而實考體裁多為說明文和議論文。

3.文章的語言難度中等。無法猜測而又影響理解的關鍵詞,如超出教學大綱四級詞彙表的范圍,用漢語註明詞義。

鑒於此,考生平時應大量閱讀,盡可能熟悉各種題材和不同體裁的英語文章,熟記考試大綱規定的四級詞彙,以減少閱讀中的詞彙障礙。這樣,考生才能做到心中有數,從容應試。

前文中提到,大學英語教學的主要目的是培養學生具有較強的閱讀能力,英語四級考試閱讀理解部分正是具體檢測學生的這種能力。所謂較強的閱讀能力,包括閱讀速度和閱讀理解兩個方面。在35分鍾內完成1700字的閱讀量並答完20個小題,沒有較快的閱讀速度,不能在規定時限中讀完全部材料,勢必影響閱讀甚至其它部分的答題效果。縱觀歷次四級統考,一般的考生做閱讀理解時均超過35分鍾,說明考生的閱讀速度與大綱要求尚有一定的差距。

要提高閱讀速度,必須從平時就養成正確、良好的閱讀習慣,努力克服掉閱讀過程中影響速度的各種習慣性做法。這些做法主要包括:

1.用手或筆指著材料閱讀。大部分考生都有這種不良習慣,在平時的閱讀訓練中務必用心更正。

2.輕聲或無聲的逐字閱讀。朗讀是加強語感、提高應用能力的重要途徑,但在應試中,相當一部分考生進行無聲的「朗讀」當然就大大減慢了閱讀速度。平時,要嘗試精泛搭配、快慢結合的閱讀練習,盡力擴展視幅(eye span),即單位時間進入眼睛的閱讀量。

3. 重復閱讀。由於精力不集中或遇到單詞障礙,考生往往就文中個別字詞或句子來回讀幾遍,越讀越急,越急越弄不懂含義。這就要求考生在平時的閱讀中,不要逢生詞就查字典,盡量通過分析構詞法和上下文猜測詞義。在考試中,考生必須保持平和的心態,全神貫注,學會抵抗各種干擾,避免由於分心造成的重復閱讀而影響閱讀速度的現象

4.譯讀,即在閱讀過程中,不斷地進行膛詞逐句的翻譯,通過譯成母語來輔助理解。由於沒有掌握正確的閱讀方法,習慣於在不加限定的時間內,對一小塊文章精雕細琢,導致了逐詞閱讀接受信息的習慣。

閱讀理解部分是分數大項,考生在這一方面得分不高,除了上面提到的閱讀速度問題之外,還有其它一些消極因素影響考生的應試效率:

1.對生詞有畏懼心理。這說明考生單詞記憶不牢固,對四級大綱中的多義詞只知其一,不知其二。對超綱詞或大綱中的難詞望而生畏、手足無措。其實,這類詞也許不會形成語篇理解上的障礙,不會影響答題。考生必須頭腦清醒,對所謂的生詞有個正確的認識。

2.缺乏對語言的整體把握。這說明考生語法結構方面並不熟練,因而對文中句與句之間、段與段之間的邏輯關系搞不清楚。

3.綜合概括能力欠佳。尤其對於並無明顯主題句的段落,要通過微觀審視,從宏觀上把握其中心思想,領會作者的意圖。

4.不熟悉題型、命題形式和解題方法。

5.在個別題項上耗時太多。這是考生極易犯的毛病,不僅在閱讀理解方面,在其它任何題型上均會如此。應試中,考生務必衡量單個題項的分值,統籌兼顧,全盤考慮,避免只見樹木不見森林,撿了芝麻丟了西瓜。

6.閱讀方法與答題步驟欠妥。做閱讀理解題時,切忌拿來就讀,逐字逐句地研讀,應該講究一定的方法、步驟:
(1)先掃視短文或每段的開首句,了解文章的題材和體裁。
(2)瀏覽5個問題,了解題目類型,針對不同題型,應用不同的閱讀、解答方法。若問題與短文在同一頁上,只須標出單個題項的關鍵詞語,如「imply」、 「word」、「title」、「main idea」、「reason」、「how many」,等等。若問題與短文不在同一頁上,也可迅速地將有關關鍵詞語草寫在短文一頁,以便於參考。
(3)遵循先易後難的原則。先做相對容易的題目,建議採用查閱(scanning)方法。在查閱過程中,有關較難題目的一些信息也會暴露出來,查閱可為解答這類題目節約時間、提供線索。
語境對閱讀理解也大有裨益。如果遇到缺乏語篇銜接的文體時,讀者在閱讀中就應設身處地,身臨其境,要善於揣摩和合理想像相關人物的處境、心理和有關事件的發展演變過程,設法補上缺少的銜接,在上下文和情景中重新構造起有助於理解的語境。

具體閱讀理解方法有快讀、查讀和細讀三種,根據不同的目的,採用不同的方法。一般說來:

1. 快讀(Skimming)。快讀的目的是用瀏覽全言語的方法了解文章的大意和主題思想,並對文章的結構有個總的概念,快讀時,應特別注意文章的開始段、結束段、文章中每段的段首句和結尾句以及篇章連接手段和行文中的信息詞(signal word),因為它們往往是對文章內容的最精簡概括,是左右文章大意的關鍵。

2.查讀(scanning)。查讀是指以問題位線索,帶著問題,以尋找某一特定的信息而進行的閱讀。

3. 細讀(Reading for full understanding)。找到文章中的有關范圍以後,即在引范圍內逐句閱讀,特別對關鍵詞、句要仔細琢磨,以便對其有較深刻、較准確的理解和掌握。不僅要理解其字面意思,而且要通過推理、判斷、弄清文章中「字里行間」潛在意思。在細讀時,對沒有學過的生詞,可根據上下文或自己的背景知識等來推測其意義;對難以看懂的長句,可藉助語法手段,對其加以分析,以達到透徹理解。
英語閱讀理解技巧
新的高中英語教學大綱明確規定:"側重提高閱讀能力"。縱觀近幾年的高考英語試題,我們不難看出,閱讀理解能力是高考考查的重點,自始至終占著主導地位,並且有逐年增加的趨勢。可以毫不誇張地說,做好閱讀理解題,是獲得高考英語高分的關鍵!
閱讀理解能力測試的主要要求是:
1. 讀材料的主旨和大意,以及用以說明主旨和大意的事實和細節。
2. 既理解具體的事實,也理解抽象的概念。
3. 既理解字面的意思,也理解深層的含義,包括作者的態度,意圖等。
4. 既理解某句,某段的含義,也理解全篇的邏輯關系,並據此進行推理和判斷。
5. 既能根據所提供的信息去理解,也能結合中學生應有的常識去理解。根據這五項要求,我們可將閱讀理解多項選擇題歸納為以下幾種題型:細節理解題,詞句理解題,主題、主旨題,猜測詞義題,推理判斷題。下面作者結合平時教學中的經驗體會,談一談做英語閱讀理解題的技巧與策略。
一、 先看題干,帶著問題讀文章。
即先看試題,再讀文章。閱讀題干,首先要掌握問題的類型,分清是客觀信息題還是主觀判斷題。客觀信息題可以從文章中直接找到答案;而主觀判斷題考查的是對文章的感情基調,作者未加陳述的觀點以及貫穿全文的中心主旨的理解等,這類題必須經過對作者的態度、意圖以及對整篇文章進行深一層的推理等。其次,了解試題題干以及各個選項所包含的信息,然後有針對性地對文章進行掃讀,對有關信息進行快速定位,再將相關信息進行整合、甄別、分析、對比,有根有據地排除干擾項,選出正確答案。此法加強了閱讀的針對性,提高了做題的准確率,節省了寶貴的時間。特別適用於對圖形表格類題材的理解。
二、 速讀全文,了解大意知主題。
閱讀的目的是獲取信息。一個人的閱讀能力的高低決定了他能否快速高效吸收有用信息。閱讀能力一般指閱讀速度和理解能力兩個方面。閱讀速度是閱讀最基本的能力。沒有一定的閱讀速度就不能順利地輸入信息,更談不上運用英語。近幾年的高考閱讀速度大約是每分鍾40個詞左右。考生必須在十分有限的時間內運用略讀、掃讀、跳讀等技巧快速閱讀,搜尋關鍵詞、主題句,捕捉時空、順序、情節、人物、觀點,並且理清文章脈絡,把握語篇實質。
抓主題句這是快速掌握文章大意的主要方法。主題句一般出現在文章的開頭和結尾。用歸納法撰寫的文章,都是表述細節的句子在前,概述性的句子居後。此時主題句就是文章的最後一句。通常用演繹法撰寫的文章,大都遵循從一般到個別的寫作程序,即從概述開始,隨之輔以細說。這時,主題句就是文章的第一句。當然也有些文章沒有主題句,需要讀者自己去歸納。主題句往往對全文起提示、啟迪、概括、歸納之作用,主旨大意題,歸納概括題,中心思想題往往直接可從主題句中找到答案。

不難看出,文章的第一句是主題句,後面的句子都圍繞這個句子展開。
三、 詳讀細節,理順思路與文章脈絡。
文章絕不是互不相乾的句子雜亂無章的堆砌。作者為文,有脈可循。如記敘文多以人物為中心,以時間或空間為線索,按事件的發生、發展、結局展開故事;論述體則包含論點、論據、結論三大要素,通過解釋、舉例來闡述觀點。你可根據文章的特點,詳讀細節,以動詞、時間、地點、事件、因果等為線索,找出關鍵詞語,運用"畫圖列表法",勾畫出一幅完整清晰的文章主題和細節的認知圖。
四、 邏輯推理,做好深層理解題。
在實際閱讀中,有時作者並未把意圖說出來,閱讀者要根據字面意思,通過語篇邏輯關系,研究細節的暗示,推敲作者的態度,理解文章的寓義。這就是通常所說的深層理解。深層理解主要包括歸納概括題(中心思想,加標題等)和推理判斷題,是閱讀理解中的難點。深層理解是一種創造性的思維活動。它必須忠實於原文;要以文章提供的事實和線索為依據,立足已知推斷未知,不能憑空想像,隨意揣測;它要求讀者對文字的表面信息進行分析、挖掘和邏輯推理,不能就事論事,以偏概全。只有吃透文章的字面意思,推理才有前提和基礎。
推理題在提問中常用的詞有:infer, imply, suggest, indicate等。

五、 猜詞悟義,掃除閱讀攔路虎。
猜詞是應用英語的重要能力,也是高考中常用的題型。它不但需要准確無誤地理解上下文,而且要有較大的泛讀量,掌握或認識較多的課外詞彙。我們要學會"順藤摸瓜",通過構詞,語法,定義,同位,對比,因果,常識,上下文等線索確定詞義。
a. 定義法
如:Annealing is a way of making metal softer by heating it and then letting it cool very slowly.
句子給予annealing 以明確的定義,即"退火"。
It will be very hard but also very brittle------that is , it will break easily.
從後面的解釋中我們可以了解到brittle 是"脆"的意思。
The herdsman , who looks after sheep,earns about 650yuan a year.
定語從句中 looks after sheep 就表明了 herdsman 的詞義為"牧人"。
b 同位法

我一般較學生硬著頭皮讀閱讀100--300 篇,(相當於高考長度的)有時不一定要作後邊的題,寫寫讀書筆記摘要,摘抄好的句子短語,怎樣提高閱讀?
多讀,精泛結合,
把握讀的方法,使用瀏覽,查讀,尋讀,對不同文體採用不同的方法,就好比駕駛員開車要用不同的速度一樣,
學會揣詞,分析長句難句,抓住句子主幹或關鍵詞,善於找主題句,知道常見的問題怎麼出:
問主題:main idea,topic sentence,mainly talk about,
問細節:5個「W」,
考推理:infer, draw a conclusion, conclude, according to... from...
問觀點:idea, opinion, attitude, in... opinion,the author thinks...
語感對英語學習來說很重要,但僅憑語感是不能取得好成績的,正確的語感是建立在扎實的基礎上的。如果沒有平時對語法的准確掌握和堅持不懈的大聲朗誦,是無法建立好的語感的。雖然快高考了,但千萬不要著急,從現在開始,語法知識點咱碰到一個掌握一個,重要的是學會劃分句子結構和增加詞彙量,遇到句子能讀懂其意思。因為在考試中,完全是考語法的只有單選中的幾個題,分值不高。
在平時學習中,也要大聲朗誦許多文章來增加語感,好的語感會幫助自己做題更加得心應手 。
